Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the Special Forces units involved in the movie.

Answer: Delta Force, 160th SOAR, 75th Ranger Regiment

The ultra elite Delta Force unit took down the building and secured the hostages, the Rangers provided ground cover and the 160th SOAR, or Nightstalkers, flew the Blackhawks and Little Birds. Delta operators were also in the Blackhawks providing covering sniper fire for the ground units.
2. Who was the first soldier killed in the battle?

Answer: Pilla

Sgt. Dominick Pilla, of the 75th Ranger Regiment, was the first soldier killed, on top of the humvee convoy, evacuating the injured Blackburn.
3. What kind of helicopter is the movie named after?

Answer: MH60 Black Hawk

Tragically, 2 went down. A third one, Super 62, made it back to base before crashing.

There have been some people disputing that the answer should be UH60. The M, in this case, signifies that it was a specialized Black Hawk for Special Operations.
4. What was the name of the Delta soldier defending the first downed Blackhawk?

Answer: Busch

Sadly, SSG Daniel Busch later died from his wounds. His name was mentioned very quickly by one of the Delta operators coming off of the Little Bird.
5. Who is the President of the United States at the time of the conflict?

Answer: Clinton

Soldiers that fought in this battle were not happy with Bill Clinton's decision to withdraw the troops, following this battle.
6. Two Delta operators earned the first Posthumanous Medal of Honor since Vietnam. Who were they?

Answer: Shughart and Gordon

SFC Randy Shughart and MSG Gary Gordon were the first soldiers since Vietnam to receive the Posthumanous Medal of Honor, for their attempt to defend the second downed Black Hawk and its crew.

Answer: Galentine

It was sewn back on later.
9. What was the year of the battle?

Answer: 1993

October 3rd, 1993 was the actual date of the battle. A mission that was supposed to take 30 minutes extended another 13 hours.
10. What is the name of the overall mission to take out Aidid?

Answer: Operation Restore Hope

Operation Restore Hope was meant to take Aidid out of power and "restore hope" to the Somali people. Operation Overlord, of course, was the name for the Allied landings on Normandy, June 6 1944. Operation Enduring Freedom is the name for the ongoing war on terror. Operation Irene does not exist, but Irene is the codename for the particular mission that the movie was based on.
11. What shot down the Black Hawks?

Answer: Rocket Propelled Grenades

Russian made RPG's, or Rocket Propelled Grenades were responsible for the loss of two Black Hawks.
12. Who was thrown into battle after "serving coffee" the previous years?

Answer: Grimes

Danny Grimes was thrown into the battle when a fellow soldier broke his arm. He was almost killed 3 times by RPG's throughout the conflict. Interesting fact: This character actually portrays the real life soldier Spec. John Stebbins. His name was changed to Grimes because apparently he is in prison, convicted of something I am not certain of.
13. Who is the actor who portrayed Norm "Hoot" Gibson?

Answer: Eric Bana

Eric Bana is the lead character in the movie "The Hulk", and plays the role of Hector in the movie "Troy".
14. What is the rank of Danny McKnight?

Answer: Lt. Col.

Lt. Col. Danny McKnight was the leader of the Humvee convoy. He was portrayed by Tom Sizemore ("Saving Private Ryan", "Heat").
15. 27 Soldiers lost their lives during the battle.

Answer: False

18 soldiers actually lost their lives DURING the battle. The movie says 19 soldiers died, but the 19th, SFC Matt Rierson actually died 2 days after from a mortar attack at the hangar. He was not portrayed in the movie, although it is thought that the fictional character Jeff Sanderson, played by William Fichtner ("Heat", "Armageddon"), was modeled after the real life Rierson.
