Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start off with a sad one. Who sent Holly the telegram informing her that her brother Fred had died?

Answer: Doc

An awfully impersonal but unfortunately necessary method of delivering such news. Jose's baffled and stiff reaction should have been her first clue that it wasn't going to work out for them.
2. Where was Fred stationed when the jeep accident, that killed him, occur?

Answer: Fort Riley, Kansas

Really a maximum impact tragedy: young, "dotty" Fred, Holly's only known blood family and only months from discharge, dies in a non-combat accident. It was actually breathtaking to hear Paul read the telegram aloud for the first time, and I had read the book!
3. When we next see Paul and Holly together, some time has passed. Paul, now living elsewhere in the city, is coming back to the apartment building for dinner with Holly. We hear a musical instrument being practiced somewhere in the neighborhood, as we have at several points throughout the movie. What instrument do we hear?

Answer: piano

It's first noticeable when Paul is getting out of the taxi, heading into the apartment for the first time. I can't quite tell whether the player is actually getting any better over time or not!
4. When Paul comes back to visit Holly, her apartment has been completely decked out in Brazilian artifacts, and a Portuguese language record is playing in the background. How many irregular verbs does Holly say there are in the Portuguese language?

Answer: 4000

I was most impressed with the one phrase Holly had managed to learn, which in English meant "I believe you are in league with the butcher." Always learn the most colorful and potentially useful terms first, I always say.
5. How many Brazilian brats did Holly say she expected to raise with Jose?

Answer: 9

I can't imagine a woman who barely managed for herself and a cat could really spend her life raising nine Brazilian brats, but I suppose that was the point.
6. What color eyes does Holly say her Brazilian brats will have, presumably like her own?

Answer: bright green

She says this as she's explaining her future plans to Paul while they walk the streets of New York on what is supposed to be her last night in the country before heading to Rio. It seems as though she's trying to convince herself as much as Paul.
7. How many copies of the building key does Holly have made since she always seems to be losing hers?

Answer: 26

Since she keeps them all on one key ring, I guess the point was just to make them harder to lose. Interestingly, it's the same number of different "rats" Holly makes a point of saying earlier in the film that she's dated in the last six months. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a chance to use any of her spare keys in the scene because the door is already open, and we find out why when she arrives in her apartment to find the police lying in wait.
8. What is the name of Sally Tomato's lawyer, who Holly assumes will be her lawyer until she sees him in handcuffs?

Answer: Mr. O'Shaughnessy

"Aw, shuddup!" You'd think someone who's as otherwise street-smart as Holly would've understood that situation a little better, wouldn't ya'?
9. In what publication does the headline "Tomato's Tomato Pinched by Cops" appear, as we see Paul reading it in the bar?

Answer: New York Record

I don't know if it was a real paper or not (I suspect not), but the headline was an attention-grabber, complete with a picture of a smiling Holly.
10. When Paul called O.J. Berman in Hollywood to ask what to do about Holly's arrest, how much money did Paul have to put into the pay phone for the first three-minutes of the call?

Answer: $3.00

Good thing for him the call wasn't more than three minutes long! That seems awfully steep to me for the time, but then again, it was a coast-to-coast call.
11. How much was Holly's bail after her arrest for her dealings with Sally Tomato?

Answer: $10,000

We find that out in the course of Paul's phone call to O.J. Although Holly says later in the taxi that the police aren't really interested in her as much as her testimony, they never indicate that the charges have actually been dropped.
12. At what hotel had Paul made a reservation for Holly, as he instructed the taxi driver when he picked Holly up from the jail?

Answer: the Clayton Hotel

Paul told the cab driver, "Clayton Hotel, 84th and Madison."
13. From what airport was Holly due to fly out to Rio, where she insisted the cab take her despite her circumstance of being on bail and technically not permitted to travel at the time?

Answer: Idlewild

Later re-named JFK, it was originally Idlewild, New York City's chief airport.
14. Riding in the cab after leaving jail, Holly says, "There are certain shades of _________ that can wreck a girl's complexion." Shades of what?

Answer: limelight

She adds that "they'll have the rope up at every saloon in town." In her circles, I would imagine it's especially bad to be considered a snitch, however unwittingly or unwillingly.
15. And finally, in one of my favorite quotes of the movie, Holly, asking Paul to read Jose's letter to her, says she can't read it herself because "a girl can't read that sort of thing without her" what?

Answer: lipstick

No hints here, because that was a critical line! The lipstick as an excuse showed Holly clinging to the last of her particular brand of dignity while she was so painfully rejected by what she felt was her big chance to escape the world she'd been stuck in for so long. Fortunately, after a short speech and a rain-drenched search for Cat, she and Paul were able to reconcile, showing hope that maybe there was still a chance for her yet. What a great movie!
