Jan (Stellan Skarsgård) works on the oil rigs. The helicopter is delayed and Bess is getting worked up.

There is a housing for bells on the church roof, but one of the elders of the congregation states that bells are not needed in the worship of God. Jan and his fellow oil rig workers joke that they would put bells up there one day. Bess loves the idea.

Before signing the papers, Jan asks if he will ever see Bess again and is told probably not, as they will be sending her to Glasgow.

Bess asks Dodo to pray for God to cure Jan so that he will get up from his bed and walk, before she goes off to what she knows could be her final act. In the final scene of the movie, Jan and his colleagues are seen standing on the ship's deck under a set of ringing church bells.
