Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fronsac and Mani's mission to hunt The Beast is sponsored by what Government official?

Answer: M. Buffon

M. Buffon is the Royal Adviser who has set up Fronsac's expedition to Gevaudan Province. M. Bison was the bad guy from 'Street Fighter.'
2. What kind of Indian is Mani (Mark Dacascos), according to Fronsac?

Answer: Iroquois Mohawk

Mani is an Iroquois Mohawk, most likely from the American Northwest where Fronsac would have been during the French and Indian war.
3. Mani is said to have killed an officer in Fronsac's army battalion during the war. Which rank of officer?

Answer: Captain

Fronsac explains that he 'found him slaying the Captain,' and that he didn't turn him in because he felt Mani's vengeance was {justified;} given the horrific means by which the Captain has wiped out Mani's tribe. (Selling them pox-infested bedsheets as a sort of primitive germ warfare.)
4. Mani waits nearly and hour into the film before speaking a single word. When he finally does, what is the word?

Answer: 'Merci.'

Mani's first line of spoken dialogue is 'Merci,' ('Thank you,') directed to Fronsac after he had prevented Marianne from shooting an innocent wolf. (Among the myriad of things about the Europeans that ticks Mani off is the glee with which they slaughter the local wolves in hopes of eventually blasting The Beast.)
5. When first briefed on the history of The Beast, Fronsac is told that there is one thing it has not yet attacked. What is it?

Answer: Men

The Beast spares no woman or child but avoids men 'As if it knew to fear them.'
6. Mani held a position of some importance as a member of his tribe. What was his position?

Answer: Shaman

Fronsac explains that Mani is 'sort of a priest' is his own culture when Sardis asks if Fronsac had baptized him yet.
7. Though the true identity and motives of the mysterious prostitute Sylvia (Monica Bellucci) are never COMPLETELY revealed, the clues we DO get throughout the film would most likely point to her being what? (I TOLD YOU some of these would be spoilers, remember)?

Answer: A Vatican spy

During the early scene where Fronsac is introduced to the various noblemen inhabiting Gevaudan Province, one of them mentions a local rumor that the Vatican had sent a spy to investigate The Beast. Bellucci's character tells Fronsac that she is from Italy when the first meet, and later offers to 'introduce him in Rome.' Both locations would place her base of operations right in The Vatican's back yard.
8. The prostitute who refuses to 'service' Mani at the brothel calls him a 'sorcerer' and claims she saw something 'move' on him. What does she think she saw?

Answer: Snakes

She swears she saw snakes, possibly a reference to the strange tattoos Mani has on the right side of his chest. Shortly after a bold girl has (eventually) stepped up to the challenge, Mani sweeps the sheets that had been covering his waist away, which seems to make A LOT of the girls want to change their minds.
9. Among the several 'unusual' weapons used by characters in the film is a sword, possibly African in origin, used by a villain near the climax. What is it made of?

Answer: Bone

The sword is (or at least was design to look as if) it was made from the bone fragments of a large animal, and can seperate into chain-linked bits to be used as a whip. This has to be one of the four or five coolest swords ever used on film.
10. What was the name of the gypsy girl, rescued by Mani and Fronsac at the beginning of the film, who never seems to be too far away from much of the 'Beast'-related activity?

Answer: Cecile

11. Martial-arts champ Mark Dacascos ('Mani') did NOT appear in which of these film and television productions?

Answer: Stone Cold

Dacascos was the title character in the short-lived 'Crow' television series, a half-Japanese outlaw in 'Drive' and Scott Wolfe's brother in 'Double Dragon.' 'Stone Cold' was the would-be star vehicle for would-be action star Brian Bosworth.
12. Which of these deadly implements do we NOT see the mysterious Sylvia (Monica Bellucci) use in the course of the film?

Answer: Bullwhip

Sylvia makes interesting use of poison, a dagger and even a razor-edged fan, but no whips.
13. When Fronsac, Thomas d'Apcher and Mani finally confront 'The Beast' in the forest, who is the only man to confront the monster head-on?

Answer: Mani

While Fronsac and d'Apcher take up 'sniper' positions against the creature, Mani strides into view and faces 'The Beast' with open arms as if challenging it to direct combat.
14. What does Fronsac tell the Gevaudan gentry is being written about 'their' Beast in Paris?

Answer: Ballads

The books are being written by a different group entirely.
15. Though largely a work of fiction, many story elements and characters from the film are based on true events. Of the following choices, which one is NOT a representation of known historical fact?

Answer: 'The Beast' is part of a large religious conspiracy.

Jean-Francios did indeed have only one arm, and he did use a specially-designed hunting rifle. Though under different circumstances than those shown in the film, a rogue wolf was found to be the 'actual' beast responsible for the killings. The larger web of conspiracy surrounding 'The Beast' is, as far as anyone knows, was totally an invention of the film.
