The Women's Institute, known as the 'WI', is the largest voluntary organisation for women in the United Kingdom, and has in excess of 200,000 members. The first Women's Institute in the world, was founded in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada.

The first such group in the United Kingdom began in Anglesey, Wales in 1915.

The film is set in the Yorkshire Dales. The original "Calendar Girls" belong to the Rylstone Women's Institute, however a majority of the filming took place in Kettlewell, which is also in the Yorkshire Dales. The fictional branch of the Women's Institute featured in the film is called Knapley.

The character Chris Harper, who is played by Helen Mirren, has the idea for the calendar, following the death of her friend, Annie Clarke's (played by Julie Walter's), husband John, from non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

In the film, Annie and Chris attend at the National Conference of the Women's Institute, where they make an appeal for approval for the calendar. This is subsequently given by their branch President, Marie, who is played by Geraldine James.

The initial aim of the women posing for the calendar is to raise money for a comfortable sofa in the visitors lounge at the hospital where John Clarke received his treatment. The calendar far exceeded the amount required for a sofa, and in the film they raised £286,000 for the charity.

Ruth Reynoldson, played by Penelope Wilton, discovers that her husband, Eddie,(played by George Costigan) is having an affair, when she rings his hotel room after he stormed out of the house following the production of the calendar, and a woman answers the telephone.

Ruth goes to the hotel and confronts her husband and his mistress. He is rendered speechless when she tells him that she is going to Hollywood.

John was an Assistant National Parks Officer, for the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and he had a love of flowers.

He was due to give a talk to the Women's Institute, but sadly he dies before the event. He had already written his talk, the contents of which are read out at a meeting of the 'WI'. In this he states that his favourite flower is the Sunflower, which he describes as being a "satellite dish for sunshine".

Whilst at the hospital visiting John Clarke(John Alderton), Chris (Helen Mirren), became aware of Lawrence's photography skills , as John tells her during a conversation.

It is Lawrence's idea that the calendar be done in black and white, with a coloured Sunflower in each picture. He also has the idea that the women pose doing things associated with the Women's Institute, for example, jam making and baking.

When the women are checking in at the airport,to fly to America for the show, they discover that their flights have been upgraded. They are also booked into first class accommodation at the hotel, where the desk clerk calls Annie(Julie Walters), "Miss February", stating that he has seen her photograph in the newspaper that morning.

When they appear on the show, the women all wear black, and each of them wears a Sunflower.

The character Celia, played by Celia Imrie, is the first woman who poses nude for the calendar, posing behind some iced cakes, each topped with a cherry.
