1. Paul Newman played Brick Pollitt, the younger son of Big Daddy Pollitt. In the first scene of the movie what accident did Brick have?

Answer: He broke his leg

Brick had been drinking and had gone to the football stadium where he had played during high school. In his mind he relived his past glories as a high school football star and attempted to jump a hurdle. He fell and broke his leg.
2. This movie was centered around a wealthy southern family gathering to celebrate the 65th birthday of the family patriarch "Big Daddy" Pollitt. What actor played the part of Big Daddy?

Answer: Burl Ives

Burl Ives, a big man with a gentle voice, was known for his rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". He attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers' College from 1927-29, but decided he was wasting his time and dropped out. The school, now Eastern Illinois University, named a building after him 60 years later.
Ives also starred in "East of Eden" and "Desire Under the Elms".
3. Brick's wife, Maggie, or Maggie the Cat as she refers to herself, was played by which actress?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

Taylor, born in London, is the daughter of American parents who were both from Kansas and were residing in London at the time of her birth. She starred in her first motion picture at the age of nine, and has won three Academy Awards during her film career. 4. At the beginning of the movie, Mae had her five children practicing what entertainment for Big Daddy's party?

6. Brick's friend Skipper committed suicide. How did he do this?

Answer: By jumping from a window in a tall building

Skipper and Brick had played football together, but age was catching up with them.
Skipper played a bad game, got drunk and called Brick wanting help. Brick didn't help because he thought there was something going on between Skipper and Maggie. This was the reason he was wouldn't have anything to do with Maggie.
7. Big Daddy arrived home for his birthday celebration after a visit to the doctor and told the family he had no serious health problems except for some what?

Answer: indigestion

Big Daddy and his wife had been told by the doctor that Big Daddy's health was fine, but the truth was that Big Daddy had cancer and didn't have long to live. Since Mae was determined that Cooper would inherit his father's fortune, she had to hide her disappointment when she found out Big Daddy wasn't dying. Brick was the first one to hear the truth from the doctor.
8. In an argument about Big Daddy's money, Maggie told Brick, "You can be ______ without money, but you can't be ______ without it." Complete the quote.

Answer: young, old

Maggie wanted Brick to realize how Cooper and Mae were doing everything possible to make sure Big Daddy gave Cooper control of his fortune. When Brick said he didn't want the money, Maggie told him how hard it was being poor - having to suck up to people, having no clothes, and having to wear a hand-me-down wedding dress.
9. What did Brick and Maggie give Big Daddy for his birthday?

Answer: cashmere robe

Maggie had bought the robe and tried to get Brick interested in the gift, but he didn't want any part of it as he didn't want any part of his family or his father's celebration. When the family urged Big Daddy to open his gift, he told them to open it themselves because he wanted to talk to Brick.
10. The word "mendacity" meaning "the tendency to be untruthful" was used several times in the movie. Who told a really big untruth at the very end of the movie that brought joy to some and rage from others?

Answer: Maggie

Maggie lied about being pregnant. She told Big Daddy that was her birthday present to him. He and Big Mama were overjoyed, but Mae became enraged and said Maggie was lying. She said she could hear through the bedroom walls and knew that Maggie and Brick had not been together.

She tried to make Maggie out as a liar because if Maggie was pregnant, Cooper had less chance of inheriting his father's fortune.
