Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2002 movie, starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere was the first musical since 1968 to win the Oscar for Best Picture?

Answer: Chicago

The movie, based on the stage show of the same name, sees murderesses Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger), meeting and competing for popularity in the Cook County Jail, with the assistance of lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere). Apart from Best Picture, the movie won a further five Oscars including Best Supporting Actress for Zeta-Jones.

The photo was Chicago's Willis Tower, also known as Sears Tower, which when it was built in 1973 was the tallest building in the world at 442.1 metres (1,450 feet).
2. Based on a non-fiction book by Herbert Asbury, this 2002 movie centred on a feud between Protestants and Catholics and starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio as leaders of the warring factions. Name it.

Answer: Gangs Of New York

"Gangs Of New York" received much praise, both from history scholars for the accuracy of the film and from the Academy Awards Committee, who nominated it for ten Oscars. It failed to win a single Oscar however, although Daniel Day-Lewis did win a Best Actor BAFTA for his portrayal of William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting. The picture used here is the world famous Central Park.
3. In which 1993 Nora Ephron directed movie do Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan eventually get together, thanks to Ross Malinger?

Answer: Sleepless In Seattle

Hanks played Sam Baldwin, a widower with a young child named Joshua, played by Malinger. On Christmas Eve, Joshua persuades his dad to go on a radio chat show and speak of his feelings for his late wife and this broadcast is heard by Annie Reed, played by Ryan. Several near misses later, the two finally connect thanks to Joshua leaving his back pack on the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

The photo is of the Seattle Space Needle, built for the 1962 World's Fair.
4. Which 1940 movie about a couple remarrying after getting divorced two years earlier starred Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart?

Answer: The Philadelphia Story

Hepburn played rich girl, Tracy Lord who was disillusioned with marriage to yacht designer C.K. Dexter Haven, played by Grant and so sought a divorce. As she is about to marry her new beau, played by John Howard, magazine reporter Mike Connor (Stewart) manages to infiltrate the pre marital planning with the help of her ex husband and she finds herself torn between the three men. Eventually, at the eleventh hour, with wedding guests waiting, she makes her decision and remarries her original love and ex husband, C.K. Dexter Haven.

The photo clue is Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, across the street from the Liberty Bell.
5. Online reviewer "The A.V. Club" named this 2016 movie, "the worst film of the year", as not even the talents of Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Guy Williams as prime minister could save it. Which movie was it?

Answer: London Has Fallen

The follow up to "Olympus Has Fallen" (2013), in which North Korea attacked the White House, "London Has Fallen" was about a Pakistani arms dealer attacking several world leaders whilst they are in London to attend the funeral of the British prime minister.

Other reviews of the movie called it "effortlessly racist" ("Variety" magazine) and "an unflushable turd of a movie" (londonist.com). The photo is of Elizabeth Tower, home to Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.
6. In which 1939 Frank Capra movie does Boy Ranger leader Jefferson Smith, played by James Stewart, become a U.S. Senator with a secretary played by Jean Arthur?

Answer: Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" was hugely controversial for its time due to its portrayal of political corruption in the American government. So much so that it was accused of being an anti-American and pro-communist movie by press and politicians alike. Nevertheless, it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Outstanding Production and Best Director, both of which it lost to "Gone With The Wind".

In fact of the 11 nominations, it won just one, that of Best Writing, Original Story. Washington icon, the White House was the photo used for this question.
7. In 1972 when this movie was released it was verging on erotica with its scenes between a middle aged hotelier (Marlon Brando) and the young object of his desires Jeanne (Maria Schneider). Directed by the great Bernardo Bertolucci, which movie was this?

Answer: Last Tango In Paris

The relationship between Paul and Jeanne is a purely sexual one with neither knowing anything about the other. When that changes, it changes their whole relationship, with startling results. A true groundbreaking masterpiece in the opinion of many, although it was lambasted in the American press as "pornography disguised as art" and one publication even describing "vomiting by well-dressed wives" in the audience.

It was banned in several countries, but the Academy Awards committee recognised it as worthy of an Oscar nomination for Bertolucci, although he lost out to George Roy Hill for "The Sting".

The pyramid which marks the entrance to the museum in Paris was the photo for this one.
8. Starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi and Ma Dong-seok, what was the title of the brilliant 2016 zombie movie that won a Blue Dragon Award for Most Popular Film?

Answer: Train To Busan

In my opinion, the best zombie movie to be released for many years and most of the action takes place in ultra disturbing close up as the majority of the film is set on a train travelling from Seoul to Busan. The film grossed over $93 million worldwide and was nominated for a further ten Blue Dragon's including Best Picture.

The photo clue was Skyscraper City in the Haeundae community of Busan.
9. With an all star cast, this 2014 Wes Anderson directed movie won four Oscar's. It centres on the aim of hotel concierge Gustav (Ralph Fiennes) to meet the needs of all patrons, including the sexual desires of elderly women and the problems that follow when one of these women die and bequeath him a priceless painting. What is the movie?

Answer: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The movie won four Oscar's in minor categories, but was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. The cast is very impressive with Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel and Jude Law all appearing as well as Tilda Swinton and Saoirse Ronan.

In a poll by "Variety" magazine in 2018, this was voted the best Wes Anderson movie with a whopping 34% of the vote. The picture is the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest, on the banks of the Danube in Kossuth Lajos square.
10. Starring Judy Garland as Esther, which 1944 film traces a year in the life of the Smith family in the build up to the 1904 World's Fair?

Answer: Meet Me In St. Louis

"Meet Me In St. Louis" was a musical that also starred Margaret O'Brien, Mary Astor and Tom Drake alongside Garland and gave us the well known Christmas hit, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". Of the other choices, "A Night In Casablanca" starred the Marx brothers in 1946, "Manhattan Melodrama" was a 1934 movie with Clark Gable and "San Diego, I Love You" (1944) starred Jon Hall and Louise Allbritton.

The photo is the famous Gateway Arch in St. Louis, dedicated to the American people and built in 1965 as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States.
