Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1951) "Mortal, we spirits of Christmas do not live only one day of the year, we live the whole 365. So it is true of the child born in Bethlehem."

Answer: A Christmas Carol

Many versions of Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol" have been made, but this 1951 version, by director Brian Desmond Hurst, has long been my favourite. Alistair Sim delivers an absolutely wonderful Ebenezer Scrooge, the mean-spirited man who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by the visitation of a number of ghosts.

This line was delivered by the Spirit of Christmas Past, before he takes Scrooge on a trip through his past, showing him how life had been before his heart became so hardened.
2. (1983) "I want an official Red Rider, carbine-action, two hundred shot, range model air rifle." - Ralphie "You'll shoot your eye out kid." - Santa

Answer: A Christmas Story

All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a B.B. gun, but every one he tells this to delivers the same, hope-crushing response. In desperation he decides to tell Santa, but when his turn to speak comes, he freezes. Luckily he recovers in time to climb back up the slide and tell Santa what he really wants, only to receive the same reply from him. Bob Clark directed this delightfully funny look at Christmas that starred Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin and Peter Billingsley.
3. (1954) "Oh Vermont should be beautiful this time of year, with all that snow."

Answer: White Christmas

Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye play entertainers, who follow a sister, singing act to a ski resort in Vermont, where the girls are booked for the holidays. When they arrive they find that the lodge is owned by their old Army General, who is about to lose everything because of the unseasonably warm weather.

They immediately set upon a plan to bring business into the lodge, and end up falling in love with the sisters in the meantime. Of course it snows on Christmas Eve, making everything good. This line was spoken by Vera Ellen, and then echoed by Kaye shortly after the four first meet, when Kaye and Ellen are dancing. Rosemary Clooney played the fourth member of the group.
4. (2000) "Let's see, we've got a munkle for your uncle, a fant for your aunt and a fandpa for your cousin Leon."

Answer: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

He's green, he's mean and his heart is two sizes too small, but when the Grinch tries to steal Christmas by taking away all the physical trappings of the season, the Whos soon teach him that Christmas is about 'a whole lot more'. This quote is delivered early in the movie by Lou Lou Who, Cindy Lou Who's father, as he busily checks his Christmas list. Ron Howard directed this delightful adaptation of the Dr. Suess classic, that starred Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambour and Christine Baranski.
5. (1994) "Can we take a direct flight back to reality, or do we have to change planes in Denver?"

Answer: The Santa Clause

When Santa Claus accidentally falls off of Scott Calvin's roof, Scott ends up putting on the suit and falls prey to the Santa Clause. After a wild night of delivering presents, Scott finds himself at the North Pole talking to elves, which is when he delivers this line.

He soon learns that 'seeing is believing' and finally accepts the fact that he did indeed don the role with the suit. Tim Allen is delightful as Santa in this John Pasquin directed film, that also starred Wendy Crewson, Judge Reinhold, Eric Lloyd and Peter Boyle.
6. (1946) "You've been given a great gift George - a chance to see what the world would be like without you."

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

It's Christmas Eve, and things are looking pretty bleak for George Bailey. To prevent him from taking his own life an angel, Clarence, is sent down to help him through his time of crisis. When George wishes that he'd never been born, Clarence grants him that wish, and allows him to see just how much of a difference his life has made to everyone around him. Clarence delivers this line after George sees how much good he's accomplished, and becomes desperate to reenter his life. Frank Capra's masterpiece, starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Henry Travers, is a must see every year at Christmas time.
7. (2003) "And if I reach number one, I promise to sing this song, stark naked, on TV on Christmas Eve."

Answer: Love Actually

Set at Christmastime, "Love Actually" tells the stories of a number of different people, with intertwining lives, and their struggle to find happiness in the festive season. This line was delivered by Billy Mack (played by Bill Nighy), an aging rock star trying to have a revival hit with a blatantly manipulative Christmas song. Richard Curtis directed this funny, heart-warming movie that starred Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley and Alan Rickman, to name but a few.
8. (1988) "No, you are a hallucination brought about by alcohol - Russian vodka poisoned by Chernobyl."

Answer: Scrooged

Frank Cross is a cynical, driven, totally self-absorbed, television executive, who drives everyone around him crazy. While his station is staging a live version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", he's being visited by some of his own Christmas spirits, determined to teach him the true meaning of Christmas.

He delivers this line after first encountering the ghost of his former boss, in a parody of the line that Scrooge delivers in "A Christmas Carol", when he first encounters the ghost of Jacob Marley. Richarde Donner directed Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe and Carol Kane in this funny film.
9. (1947) "Would you please tell her that you're not really Santa Claus...that there actually is no such person?" - Doris "Well, I hate to disagree with you, but not only is there such a person, but here I am to prove it." - Kris Kringle

Answer: Miracle on 34th Street

Doris is a practical woman, and has brought her daughter up to be the same way. However, when Kris Kringle takes on the job of being the Macy's Santa, his assertion that he really is Santa Claus sets everyone into a spin, eventually precipitating a court case about whether Santa really exists. This exchange occurs fairly early in the film, when Doris' daughter is first beginning to believe, despite what her practical mother has told her.
George Seaton delivered this Christmas classic that starred Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn and a young Natalie Wood.
10. (2002) "I have to get married?" - Scott "It's the Mrs. Clause." - Bernard

Answer: The Santa Clause 2

Just when Scott Calvin has settled into the idea of being Santa, the elves hit him with the information that he has until midnight Christmas Eve to get married, or he will cease to be Santa. To further complicate things, Charlie is acting up again, and he has to go and sort that mess out. Isn't it wonderful when the two separate problems somehow manage to become related, and work themselves out? It's too bad that things at the North Pole aren't sorting themselves out just as easily! While not as good as the original, this sequel is definitely worth watching.
