Question 1 of 10
1. My favorite submarine movie starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. This all-male, all-action gem was released in 1958 and was the story of a sub captain's determination to sink a Japanese destroyer that was responsible for sinking three American subs. Which flick was it? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. A real favorite of mine was released in 1956 and featured Jack Palance, Eddie Albert, and Lee Marvin. Albert played a cowardly captain and Palance a courageous lieutenant and natural leader of men, who did what had to be done in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 Belgium. Filled with action, this film has a gutsy climax which would probably not be politically correct today. Which is it? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. John Wayne will show up more than once in this quiz. In this film, released in 1945, he is billed below Robert Montgomery. The story is about PT boats fighting the Japanese in the Philippines, and Montgomery had actually commanded one during the war. What is the name of this flick, in which Wayne's character is named "Rusty" Ryan? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The most decorated film in this quiz, our next entry won seven Academy Awards for 1957, including Best Picture. Starring William Holden and Alec Guinness, this British production was directed by David Lean and detailed a commando raid into Japanese-held territory in Southeast Asia. You'll be whistling the "Colonel Bogey March" when you select the name of this film from the choices below. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Another British film nominated for six Academy Awards, this film features another commando raid, this time into German-held territory. Starring Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn, I really got a kick out of the big bang in the film's climax. Which 1961 film is this? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. OK, back to the Duke and the Pacific Theater. This 1949 film earned John Wayne an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Also in the film were John Agar and Forrest Tucker. Wayne played career Marine Sergeant John Stryker. Also making an appearance are three Marines who actually raised the flag on Mount Suribachi, including Ira Hayes. Name it. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Despite the placidity of its title, this 1946 release is loaded with action as a group of GI's are sent to destroy a bridge following their landing at Salerno in Italy in 1943. Starring Dana Andrews and narrated by Burgess Meredith, the film also includes John Ireland and Lloyd Bridges. Which deceptive title is the correct one? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Let's give props to the air war with this 1949 release starring Gregory Peck along with Gary Merrill and Dean Jagger, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role of Major Harvey Stovall. The film portrayed the heavy bombing campaign over Germany and drew praise from veterans of that service. Which towering film was it? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The Duke of Edinburgh was present at the 1960 premier of this naval gem featuring the hunt for Germany's greatest weapon. Based on a novel by C.S. Forester, the British-made film stars Kenneth More and Dana Wynter, with Carl Möhner as the German enemy captain. Which classic film is this? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Returning to U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theater, our last film features classic warriors, including Richard Widmark, Richard Boone, Jack Webb, Jack Palance, and Karl Malden. The title of this 1951 release technically does not reference the Pacific Theater, but reflects the tradition of the Marines. Can you pick out Lewis Milestone's final directing effort of an American-made World War II film? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favorite submarine movie starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. This all-male, all-action gem was released in 1958 and was the story of a sub captain's determination to sink a Japanese destroyer that was responsible for sinking three American subs. Which flick was it?

Answer: Run Silent, Run Deep

"Run Silent, Run Deep" was based on a novel by Edward L. Beach and was on the "New York Times" Book Review for several months. However, Beach did not have a high opinion of the film version of his book. But for its day, this movie was a great depiction of submarine warfare, including the image of Japanese depth charges bouncing off the sub's hull and the submarine tactics of "silent running".

Answer: Attack

"Attack" won the 1956 Italian Film Critics Award. Because the officers played by Arnold and Marvin were portrayed as a coward and a manipulator, respectively, the Defense Department refused to provide production assistance. And, although his character was a coward, in actuality Eddie Albert won a Bronze Star for heroism in the Pacific Theater.

Answer: They Were Expendable

"They Were Expendable" was directed by John Ford. Although he and Wayne would eventually form a strong bond, the Duke was somewhat green still in '45, and Ford rode him hard before being injured in a fall. Montgomery then took over much of the directing. "PT 109" was released in 1963 and tells the story of John F. Kennedy's experience as a PT boat captain during the war.

Answer: The Bridge on the River Kwai

Based on "The Bridge over the River Kwai", a novel by Frenchman Pierre Boulle, who also wrote "Planet of the Apes", the screenwriters for the film were actually Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson. But Boulle was originally credited for the screenwriting, as well, because Foreman and Wilson were on the Hollywood Blacklist while they were secretly writing the screenplay. Thus Boulle was originally awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Years later, Foreman and Wilson received the Academy Award posthumously.
5. Another British film nominated for six Academy Awards, this film features another commando raid, this time into German-held territory. Starring Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn, I really got a kick out of the big bang in the film's climax. Which 1961 film is this?

Answer: The Guns of Navarone

I still watch this flick on VHS just to watch the big twin guns slide into the sea. An interesting snafu during the filming was that Gregory Peck's character was supposed to be fluent in German, which Peck, in fact was definitely not. Consequently, a voice actor named Robert Rietty dubbed in all of Peck's German lines.
Name it.

Answer: Sands of Iwo Jima

I think this was the first time I ever saw the Duke get killed. The movie also garnered four other Academy Award nominations besides Wayne's. Six veterans of Iwo Jima or Tarawa played themselves in the movie, including Medal of Honor winner David M. Shoup and Navy Cross recipient Henry P. Crowe.

Answer: A Walk in the Sun

The film was made in 1945 and actually scheduled for release in July of that year, but was delayed until '46 by Twentieth Century Fox officials when Japan surrendered. It was directed by Lewis Milestone. It was based on the novel by Harry Brown.

Answer: Twelve O'Clock High

"Flying Leathernecks" was a 1951 release starring John Wayne about Marine pilots fighting the Japanese. "Raid on Rommel" was a 1971 release starring Richard Burton about the North African campaign. "Where Eagles Dare" was a UK film released in 1968 starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood as commandos who seek to free an American general being held by the Germans in the Alps.

Answer: Sink the Bismarck

Much of the film dealt with the planners and strategists in the admiralty, as opposed to the sailors aboard the ships at sea. Despite some inconsistencies, the film has been highly praised for its accuracy and atmosphere for the hunt and destruction of the Bismarck.

Answer: Halls of Montezuma

This was Richard Boone's first feature film role, and was also the first credited appearance by Robert Wagner. Also appearing were future TV veterans Martin Milner and Neville Brand. Boone, Webb, and Malden also had long careers on the small screen.

The film also made use of actual color combat footage from the Pacific Theater.
