In the opening scene of the movie, we found out how Luke wound up on the chain gang. Luke was seen, drunk, taking the heads off of parking meters. The street was lined with decapitated parking meters.

Answer: Lucille

Dragline called the young lady washing the car Lucille. When the other inmates asked him how he knew that her name was Lucille, Dragline said that, "anything so innocent and built like that just gotta be named Lucille."

Answer: Strother Martin

It was the Captain who first spoke the classic line, "what we got here is...failure to communicate." Strother Martin was a busy actor in the 1960's, also appearing in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "The Wild Bunch", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "True Grit".

Answer: sprinkled chili powder and other spices on the ground

Luke was wearing chains in his second escape attempt. He took off cross-country, jumped fences, ran onto a railroad bridge, and through a stream, attempting to lose the bloodhounds. When he came to an old country store, he asked two young boys to get him an axe to cut his chains, and spices to throw the dogs off of his trail.

When the bloodhounds reached the spices, they began to sneeze, and sneeze, and sneeze.

Answer: the man with no eyes

The character's actual name was Blind Dick. He wore his sunglasses throughout the movie; we never saw his eyes. Nor do we hear him speak; his rifle did his talking for him. Blind Dick was played by Richard Davalos.

Answer: He thought it was a nice round number.

Luke looked like he was stuffed and unable to eat another egg. Only when Luke heard that every dollar in camp had been bet, did he continue eating. At the end of the hour, the inmates were not convinced that he had eaten the 50th egg. Dragline had to put his fingers into Luke's mouth, opening it up wide, to show that Luke had swallowed every bit of the last egg.

Answer: George Kennedy

Kennedy won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dragline. Kennedy has also appeared in "The Sons of Katie Elder", "The Flight of the Phoenix", "The Dirty Dozen", "Airport", and the "Naked Gun" series. Strother Martin was the Captain, Richard Davalos played Blind Dick, and Dennis Hopper was Babalugats.

Answer: a snapping turtle

The Bosses told Luke to go down and fetch the snapping turtle. Luke used Blind Dick's cane to get the snapper. When the turtle latched on to the cane, Luke said, "Deader than hell Boss but won't let go."

Answer: Alibi

Alibi was played by Ralph Waite, who later played Pa Walton on TV. Alibi thought he had bought a cushy job on his first day on the chain gang, but wound up spending a night in the box. Dragline was played by George Kennedy, Babalugats by Dennis Hopper (who would later co-star with Peter Fonda in "Easy Rider"), and Gambler was played by Wayne Rogers, who later played Trapper John on "MASH".

Answer: Blind Dick

Luke, while looking out of the church window, shouted out "what we got here is...failure to communicate." Blind Dick then shot Luke. Dragline helped Luke outside, and then went after Blind Dick. It took several guards to get Dragline off of Blind Dick. His sunglasses were knocked to the ground and were then run over by the prison vehicle, truly rendering him "The Man with No Eyes".
