Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the mission of the Star-ship "Dark Star"?

Answer: To destroy unstable planets

The mission originally was to destroy orbitally unstable planets to help clear the way for future colonisation. However, because they have now travelled so far from the earth even high-burst radio transmissions take 10 years, and the funding for the mission has long since been withdrawn.
2. Which of the crew members shouldn't actually be there, having stowed away?

Answer: Pinback

Pinback (played by Dan O'Bannon, who also did the film's special effects) has confessed his stowaway status to his shipmates so often that they no longer listen!
3. Which crew member has become reclusive, spending all his time in the observation dome?

Answer: Talby

Talby has become withdrawn and only speaks to his shipmates when they bring him food. He muses on the mysterious "Phoenix Asteroids" and lives in hope of one day seeing them.
4. What vital supplies were destroyed in the explosion that also wrecked the main crew quarters?

Answer: The ship's entire supply of toilet paper

At some earlier period in the mission the ship passed through an electromagnetically bound asteroid storm, wrecking the crew quarters and destroying all the toilet tissue. It is never explained how they get around this shortage!
5. The ship's original commander, Commander Powell, was killed in a mysterious accident involving what piece of equipment?

Answer: His seat belt

Powell, having died in an unexplained accident with his seat belt, is in cryogenic storage in the hold, at absolute zero.
6. What piece of equipment is damaged during yet another passage through an asteroid storm?

Answer: Internal communications laser

The internal communications laser "talks" to the bombs which are used to destroy unstable planets. Talby is forced to leave his retreat in the observation dome to try to find the fault.
7. The malfunction causes bomb #20 to arm itself and prepare to drop. How does Doolittle reverse the bombs intention to drop?

Answer: He argues phenomenology with it

In a comical sequence he consults the dead Commander in his cryogenic chamber, and the Commander recommends discussion and philosophical argument with the bomb.
8. After successfully stopping the accidental bomb drop, Doolittle returns to the ship, causing which crew member to be blown out of the airlock?

Answer: Talby

It is at this point that things start to go seriously wrong for the crew.
9. Believing Doolittle has solved the problem, Pinback attempts to give the bomb fresh orders. What does the bomb reply?

Answer: "You are false data"

The bomb reasons that since it is unable to prove that anything it knows truly exists, then the bomb must, itself, be God. The bomb then declares "let there be light" and explodes in the bomb bay, destroying the ship and killing both Pinback and Boiler.
10. What happens to Talby after the destruction of the ship?

Answer: He is absorbed into the Phoenix Asteroids

As Talby is outside the ship when it explodes, he survives, and to his joy meets the mysterious Phoenix Asteroids, and is absorbed into them, destined to travel the Universe eternally. Doolittle also briefly survives, and grabs a piece of wreckage and surfs on it into the atmosphere of a nearby planet.
