From the first letter Frankie narrated, we found out that Frankie, his mum and his nana were moving, something which happened often. Frankie's mum, Lizzie, had taken her son and left her abusive husband, Davey, years ago. Their frequent moves were made to keep Davey from finding them, something Frankie was unaware of. Lizzie went to Glasgow twice a month to retrieve Frankie's letters to his dad, and then wrote him back pretending to be Frankie's father. She always included postage stamps for Frankie's collection which he kept in an album.

Lizzie had told Frankie that his father was a sailor on the HMS Accra. Pretending to be Frankie's dad, Lizzie answered Frankie's letters with stories of exotic places the ship visited and tales of life at sea. Frankie tracked the Accra's position on a large map of the world he kept pinned to his bedroom wall.

As Lizzie later explained to the Stranger, she saw the name 'Accra' on a stamp, she didn't know it was a real ship or that it would ever come to Port Howat.

Lizzie would often sign to him, but Frankie was a champion lip-reader and a very intuitive child. He mentioned in one of the letters to his dad that his favorite thing at school was geography and that he knew every country in the world. The last letter Frankie received before he found out the Accra was coming to Port Howat said that they had crossed the equator and were going to dock at the Cape.

After looking at his map, Frankie thought it wasn't possible for the ship to make it to Scotland that fast considering how far south they were, but he nonetheless moved one of his map flags up to Port Howat.

When Ricky asked what Accra was, Lizzie explained that it was the name of Frankie's dad's ship, and also the capital of Ghana. Ricky later showed Frankie a newspaper clipping which mentioned that the HMS Accra was due in Port Howat soon. Frankie accepted Ricky's bet, against Catriona's advice, which wagered Frankie's stamp collection, and his pocket knife, against Ricky's trump cards.

After reading Frankie's letter to his dad telling about the bet, Lizzie realized she had to get someone to pretend to be Frankie's dad for a day.

After she found out Lizzie was looking for a man to pose as Frankie's father, Marie said she knew someone who could help. When Lizzie met with the man, she explained the situation and gave him Frankie's letters. The man showed up as agreed, much to the dismay of Nell, and Frankie was told this was his father.

After an awkward hello, the Stranger gave Frankie the book, which thrilled Frankie to no end. He opened the book and looked through it before asking how the man knew of Frankie's interest. Grateful to receive such a thoughtful gift, Frankie hugged the surprised man, who then awkwardly put his arms around Frankie in response. Lizzie was touched by the fact that the Stranger had taken the time to read the letters and get to know Frankie before he met him, yet she was still distrustful.

Frankie and his "dad" went to the football trials first, where a surprised Ricky had to turn over his trump cards for losing the bet. Then the Stranger and Frankie had chips at Marie's, went to look at the Accra, attempted to skim rocks on the shore, and went to the aquarium. Lizzie followed the Stranger and Frankie during the day and arrived home shortly after they did.

The Stranger said he had another day before he had to leave and asked if he could spend more time with Frankie, and with Lizzie.

After Frankie came out and hugged the Stranger again, Lizzie reluctantly agreed that she and Frankie would meet him at the quay the following day.

As Lizzie, Frankie and the Stranger spent the day together, Frankie sensed there was an attraction between Lizzie and his "dad" and periodically left them alone together. On their way home the trio encountered Marie and her boyfriend at a dance. Lizzie reluctantly accepted Marie's invitation to join them since Frankie and the Stranger both wanted to go in.

When Ricky bet Frankie that Frankie wouldn't ask Catriona to dance, the Stranger overheard. He said if Frankie asked Catriona, he would ask Frankie's mum to dance.

When first asked, Lizzie said she never danced. The Stranger said she'd have to this once, Frankie had made another bet. Then he added, "You'd better watch him. It's becoming a bit of a habit." Frankie pretended he was going to ask Catriona to dance, but instead stood over by the wall, content to watch how happy his mum was while she was dancing with the Stranger.

On the walk home, Lizzie admitted to the Stranger that she had a good time. They discussed Frankie's father, who the Stranger was stunned to find out had caused Frankie's deafness. The Stranger expressed his admiration for what Lizzie had done to protect Frankie, but she didn't feel deserving of his praise or his compliments. Lizzie explained how she encouraged Frankie to write the letters to his "dad" because it was the only way she could hear Frankie's voice. Later at home, Frankie surprised the Stranger by asking if he was coming back. The Stranger said he didn't know. Frankie retrieved the carved seahorse from a tin and gave it to the Stranger, who asked if Frankie had made it. Touched, the Stranger said he couldn't take it, but Frankie insisted and the Stranger said he'd be honored to have it.

Lizzie and the Stranger shared a tender kiss at the door, made poignant by the fact that they both knew they couldn't pursue a relationship. After the Stranger was gone, Lizzie found the money she'd paid him to be Frankie's father in her jacket pocket.

Lizzie went to the hospital to see Davey, but refused to let him see Frankie. She told Frankie his father was very sick, and Frankie drew a picture of a seahorse for him. Later, Marie said that the Stranger was her brother in answer to Lizzie's question, "Who was he?" Lizzie had seen what a generous and caring person he was, and had managed to open up and enjoy life for a while.

Lizzie showed Davey's obituary to Frankie, who was sad about the news. When Lizzie went to close the box in Glasgow, there was surprisingly a letter in it from Frankie. Frankie had written the letter to the Stranger, and in it he explained that his da, his real da, had died. Frankie again thanked the man for the book and suggested that maybe he could come and see them again.

The letter was signed, "Your friend, Frankie". When Lizzie realized Frankie knew that the Stranger wasn't his real father, she was sad that he knew she'd lied to him, but he seemed to understand that she had a reason to do what she did.

Their time with the Stranger had made all three of them happy, and Frankie was inviting him back as much for his mother as for himself.
