Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the very beginning of the movie, the main character, Greg Heffley, had a prank played on him by his older brother. What did Rodrick do to Greg?

Answer: Convinced him he was very late for his first day of school

Rodrick woke Greg up one morning, and urgently told Greg that he needed to get ready really fast, because he was late for his first day of middle school and their mom was already waiting in the car. Rodrick even changed Greg's bedside clock to show that it was after 8 a.m. Greg then raced around the house, trying to get dressed, eat breakfast and brush his teeth all at the same time. Greg's dad came downstairs to see what all the commotion was about, and only then did Greg realize that it was dark outside - it was only four in the morning, a week before school started, no less.

His parents were mad because Greg woke up his toddler brother, Manny. They didn't believe that it was Rodrick's fault though, because when they all went upstairs to Rodrick's attic bedroom, he appeared to be sleeping soundly.
2. What activity did Greg first sign up for, in an attempt to become popular in middle school?

Answer: Wrestling

Greg began the school year thinking he was already pretty popular, but wanted to move up the social ladder even more. He signed up for wrestling with his best friend, Rowley, but was discouraged when he was one of only two boys in the lowest weight class.

He was even more discouraged when the other boy his size, Fregley, pinned him. Greg then cheated and wore his mother's ankle weights so that the coach would move him up to the next weight class. However, he then had to face off against a girl, Patty Farrell, and she also beat him.

There was no more wrestling for Greg after that, and his father was disappointed.
3. What was the name of Rodrick's band?

Answer: Loded Diper

Greg's older brother, Rodrick, was a high school kid who played in a garage band called Loded Diper (pronounced like 'loaded diaper'). Rodrick was the band's drummer, and he drove a big white van with the band name painted on the side.
4. What did Greg's father do on Halloween?

Answer: Guarded the house against TP'ers

Greg's mother wanted her husband to accompany Greg and Rowley on their trick-or-treating, but he said he couldn't because he was busy guarding the house. It would seem that their house got toilet-papered every year and, in an effort to prevent that, he was going to the attic with two large buckets of water to pour on any suspicious-looking teenagers who approached the house.

His wife didn't want him to do this, because the previous year he'd accidentally dumped his water buckets on a little girl and her mother, but he said that was because last year he didn't sit in the attic, so he couldn't see what was going on.

The attic plan didn't work any better, though; he ended up dumping the water on Greg and Rowley.
5. What task did Greg and Rowley, as Safety Patrol Officers, have to do?

Answer: Walk the kindergarten students home

For some reason, Greg thought becoming a school Safety Patrol Officer would increase his popularity, and Rowley joined the Patrol with him. Even after it was explained to them that it would not make them cool, they still kept their positions, and were tasked with walking the kindergarten children home from school everyday. One day, it was raining and Rowley couldn't walk with them because he couldn't get the cast on his arm wet. Greg borrowed Rowley's raincoat and started walking the kids home by himself. On the way, Greg got scared because he thought that the teenagers who wanted to beat him up were coming, and had all the kids climb into a big hole at a construction site.

A neighbour saw him, and thought he was Rowley, because of the raincoat.

Not wanting to get in trouble with the neighbour, Greg ran off and left the kids in the hole. Rowley was then removed from the Safety Patrol, because everyone thought he'd endangered the kids, and when Greg told Rowley that it was actually him, Rowley told Greg that he'd had enough and they were no longer friends.
6. When Rowley broke his arm and had to wear cast, he became more popular at school, while Greg became less popular. How did Rowley break his arm?

Answer: He was involved in a Big Wheel accident.

One of Greg and Rowley's favourite thing to do when they were bored was some kind of game where one of them would ride a Big Wheel (like an oversized tricycle) down a hill while the other threw a ball at the one on the Big Wheel. Greg usually came up with some excuse as to why he had to be the one who did the throwing, and not the riding.

The first time in the movie that they played this game, Greg broke an ornamental deer on someone's lawn. The second time, he hit the bike's front wheel and Rowley went flying off of it and broke his arm when he landed.

When a couple of the popular girls at school saw Rowley's cast, they thought he was cool and dangerous. Greg thought it would be a good idea to tell them he was the cause of Rowley's broken arm, but that just made the girls think he was a jerk.
7. When Rowley made a new friend and Greg got jealous, Greg decided to hang out with the weird kid, Fregley, to try to make Rowley jealous. During a sleepover at Fregley's house, where did Greg sleep for awhile?

Answer: In the bathtub

Greg showed up at Fregley's house one day and said that they were having a sleepover. Fregley was excited, and Greg tried to have fun with him, but when Fregley started chasing Greg with a booger on his finger, Greg ran into the bathroom, locked the door and stayed there.

He was shown sleeping in the bathtub, when Fregley slipped an apology note under the bathroom door. Unfortunately, Fregley had stuck the aforementioned booger to the note, and Greg touched it. Then Greg left immediately, fleeing from Fregley's house in the middle of the night.
8. At the audition for the school play, which (totally irrelevant) song did the director make the kids sing for their singing audition?

Answer: Total Eclipse of the Heart

Another activity that Greg signed up for, in his quest to make it into the school yearbook and achieve popularity, was the school's production of "The Wizard of Oz". The teacher directing the play said that they would be holding a group singing audition because there were so many students, and that they would be singing one of her favourite songs.

The song turned out to be "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. Most of the kids were terrible singers, but the director was surprised to discover that Greg had a wonderful soprano voice.
9. In what part did Greg act in the school play, "The Wizard of Oz"?

Answer: He was a tree.

After Greg's successful singing audition, the play's director was ready to cast him in the part of Dorothy in the play. Greg was dismayed at the thought of playing a female role, and Patty Farrell started to have a meltdown because she thought she deserved the role of Dorothy.

The teacher/director relented, but said Greg's voice was too high for most of the male roles, so she instead said that he could play a tree. Greg agreed because he thought that the trees would get to throw apples at Dorothy (which Patty did end up playing).

The director said he couldn't, but during the play, he became angry at Patty and threw apples at her anyway. It started a major apple fight and pretty much ruined the show.
10. What nice thing did Greg do for Rowley at the end of the movie, allowing them to become friends again?

Answer: Greg told everyone that he was the one who ate the gross cheese.

At the end of the movie, Greg and Rowley got into a fight in the schoolyard. While they were fighting, the teenagers that they had a run-in with on Halloween showed up. While the rest of the students ran off scared, the teenagers made Rowley pick up the really gross, moldy piece of cheese, that had been on the ground for a long time, and that everyone believed gave you the 'Cheese Touch' (an 'ailment' similar to cooties).

They told him eat it. A teacher showed up to tell the teenagers to leave, but not before Rowley had eaten a few bites.

When the rest of the kids came back, they saw the cheese slice on the ground with bites taken out of it. Patty Farrell was about to announce to everyone that Rowley had eaten it, when Greg cut her off and said he was the one who had eaten it.

In doing so, Greg made himself the gross person that no one wanted to touch, instead of Rowley. After that, Greg and Rowley made up.
