Drop and Add a Letter: Movies Edition Quiz

Start with a six letter word, drop a letter, and re-arrange the remaining letters to get the next answer. Do this down to one letter, then make steps up again. But for a change, each clue is in the form of a film title, with the relevant word omitted.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ______ Drum Song (6 letters)

Answer: Flower

This 1961 film was directed by Henry Koster, and was based on the not very well known Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Fans of opera may be interested to note that the famous mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne (then in her late 20s)provides the singing voice for Reiki Sato, who plays Helen Chao.
2. Don't Raise the Bridge, _____ the River (5 letters)

Answer: Lower

Frankly, this is a pretty awful 1967 movie, starring Jerry Lewis and a bunch of British character actors hamming it up something rotten. The only actor who comes out of it at all well is Terry-Thomas, who plays his typical role of an upper-class English cad as well as ever.
3. She _____ a Yellow Ribbon (4 letters)

Answer: Wore

This is a classic 1949 John Ford western, starring John Wayne as Captain Nathan Brittles, an aging soldier nearing retirement. It rightly won an Oscar for Best Cinematography, although it was shamefully overlooked in all other categories.
4. King's _____ (3 letters)

Answer: Row

This 1942 movie was directed by Sam Wood and starred Ronald Reagan, giving probably his finest screen performance (with or without his legs). It also boasts a musical score by Erich Korngold, whose music for such films as "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and "The Sea Hawk" are much acclaimed.
5. Glen _____ Glenda (2 letters)

Answer: Or

This 1953 movie was written and directed by the legendary Edward D. Wood Jr. who also starred in the transvestite title role(s). It is actually rather better than you would expect (which admittedly isn't saying much).
6. The Story of _____ (1 letter)

Answer: O

This is a rather naughty 1975 French film based on the erotic novel by Dominique Aury. It is said to be rather a good example of its kind, although please believe me when I say that I do not claim to be any sort of expert.
7. A View _____ a Kill (2 letters)

Answer: To

This 1985 James Bond film was directed by John Glen and starred Roger Moore in his last appearance in the role. The chief villain, Max Zorin, is played by Christopher Walken. You may also remember Grace Jones as May Day, and the climax on an airship.
8. Some Like it _____ (3 letters)

Answer: Hot

This film, directed by Billy Wilder and released in 1959, rightly appears towards the top of practically every list of "100 Best Movies". It stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis (who both spend most of the movie in drag), plus Marilyn Monroe. What more recommendation do you need?
9. The _____ (4 letters)

Answer: Host

This movie, whose original language title is "Gwoemul", was widely acclaimed when it was released in the West and greeted as much more than just a routine monster movie. It manages to juxtapose horror, humour and sympathetic, believeable, characters in a way that Hollywood rarely manages.
10. ______ (5 letters)

Answer: Ghost

This film was directed by Jerry Zucker, and also featured a scene-stealing, Oscar-winning performance by Whoopi Goldberg. You may also remember the famous scene with the potter's wheel.
