Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Trivia Quiz

One of my personal, all-time favourite movies is 1988's "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark". While not a hugh box office hit, it developed a cult following on video in the years that followed. See how much you remember of Elvira's big screen debut.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does Elvira quit her job as host of a horror movie television program?

Answer: She refuses to sleep with the station's new, wealthy Texan owner.

The station's new Texan owner is revealed to be something of a sleaze, who intimates Elvira must sleep with him in order to keep her job. She promptly quits, quipping she needs the job like 'a leper needs a three-way mirror".

She does, in fact, discover she has been left an inheritance from her great Aunt Morgana Talbot. Surprised, she mentions to her agent that she didn't know "she had a great aunt, much less a good one."

Elvira also has a run in with the female anchor of the evening news filmed in the same studio as her own program. According to www.imdb.com, the character of the anchorwoman was based on a real anchorwoman that Cassandra Peterson (the actress who plays Elvira), did not get along with in her early does at a local television station.
2. It is Elvira's ambition to do which of the following?

Answer: To star in her own Las Vegas show

Unfortunately, the night club in Las Vegas that Elvira hopes to perform in requires $50,000 from her, to get the show up and running. Her agent reveals this fact to Elvira shortly after she quits her job at the television station. She is at a loss as to how to get the money until, as fate would have it, a messenger boy delivers the news of her inheritance.

By the end of the movie, Elvira, of course, gets her Las Vegas musical.
3. Where must Elvira travel to collect her inheritance?

Answer: Fallwell, Massachusetts

It turns out that Fallwell is a very, very conservative town. Shortly after arriving in town, one of the locals says to Elvira that she does not fit into the town, also noting "You barely fit into that dress".

The other three incorrect answers are all locations from old horror movies, similiar to the ones Elvira might screen on her television program.

Bodega Bay is the hamlet inexplicably attacked by birds in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds".

Antonio Bay is the town beset by a murderous fog in John Carpenter's "The Fog".

Whitewood, New England is the home to a group of devil worshipers in the Hammer Horror "Horror Hotel".
4. What does Bob Redding - Elvira's naïve love interest - do for a living?

Answer: He runs the local movie house

Sadly, business is not so great for Bob. He is only permitted to play G-rated movies. Elvira says she doesn't mind G-rated movies "as long as there's lots of sex and violence".

Later, when she drops by Bob's movie house, Elvira mentions that Bob has spelled 'matinee' with an extra 'e'. He assures her it is correct, to which Elvira says "I'm in show business. I think I know how to spell matinee".

It is Patty, Bob's ex-girlfriend and eventually Elvira's rival for Bob's affections, who works behind the bar at the local bowling alley. It is at the bowling alley that Elvira first meets Bob.
5. What, ultimately, does Elvira inherit from her great aunt Morgana?

Answer: A house, a dog, and a book

Elvira is less than impressed with the inheritance she receives. Later, she mumbles to herself that she needs a house in Fallwell like she "needs a padded bra".

The other items listed in the question were also featured in Morgana's will. Morgana leaves her housekeeper, Mrs. Morrissey, the silver tea service and $5,000. She leaves her automobile and a further $5,000 to her driver, Mr. Morrissey. Mrs. Morrissey is moved to tears by the act of generosity; Elvira asks what she is crying for when she has "made out like a bandit". Vincent Talbot, Morgana's brother and Elvira's great uncle, was left nothing.
6. What does Vincent Talbot, Morgana Talbot's brother and Elvira's great uncle, seek to possess?

Answer: Morgana's recipe book

Vincent mentions to his hired goons, shortly after discovering the recipe book has been bequeathed to Elvira, that the book contains more power than their feeble minds could imagine. He further asserts that the recipe book rightly belonged to him. He offers to pay Elvira $50 for the book, an offer she initially accepts but later declines when she becomes suspicious as to his motives.

Vincent wants the recipe book, which is actually a powerful spellbook, so that he may become master of the dark.
7. Elvira holds a secret midnight screening for the children of the town. Which movie does she screen?

Answer: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Elvira suggests the idea of a secret midnight screening at Bob's theatre so that she can make a little money. As is her trademark, she keeps a humourous running commentary throughout the film. The children, however, seem a little more interested in amourous affairs than the movie itself.
8. At the conclusion of the secret midnight movie screening, Elvira performs a dance for the audience based upon which film?

Answer: Flashdance

Before the midnight movie screening, Elvira raves to Bob that she has planned a spectacular finish to the dance "ripped off... err ...inspired by "Flashdance"." She will pull a rope connected to a bucket high above the stage; the bucket contains gold glitter, that will rain majestically down upon her.

Unbeknownst to Elvira, Bob's ex-girlfriend Patty has been eavesdropping and has switched the gold glitter with tar. At the conclusion of the dance, Elvira pulls on the rope, and is covered in the thick, black tar. Patty, cackling with glee from above, then drops the feathers from a torn pillow onto a distraught Elvira, leaving her tarred and feathered.
9. Elvira comes into possession of a familiar, a shape-shifting magical creature that protects its magical master. What his name?

Answer: Algonquian

When she first inherits Algonquian, Elvira is not aware that there is anything special about him, as he initially appears as a poodle. At first, Elvira thinks Algonquian is quite an uncool animal, gives him a punk hairstyle, and renames him "Gonq". (Gonq appears less than impressed with these changes, however.)

Gonq comes to the rescue a few times throughout the course of the film, in his initial shape as a poodle, and later as a much larger guard dog and even a mouse. As a familiar, he is considerably more intelligent than a simple dog.
10. How does Elvira eventually defeat her wicked great uncle Vincent?

Answer: By using a magical ring she has had since birth, to redirect Vincent's own magic against him

Recalling a mystical warning from her aunt Morgana, Elvira retrieves a magical ring she has had since her infancy, from the amputated hand of Vincent. (Elvira had clumsily lost the ring to Vincent during an earlier confrontation.) Just in time, she holds up the ring to reflect a magical blast from Vincent's remaining hand back against him, destroying him with his own magic.

All three other injuries are in fact inflicted on Vincent before he is finally defeated.
Vincent's hand is amputated by a falling battleaxe during a scuffle with Elvira, but as he has become master of the dark, it does not significantly disable him.
Elvira does fire a bazooka at Vincent at point blank range. Magically empowered, it has no effect upon Vincent. He then asks "Did you really think that was going to work?" To which Elvira humerously retorts "No, but I figured it was worth a shot."
Elvira also throws a stiletto heel at Vincent in a desperate bid to stop him. The stiletto embeds itself into Vincent's head, but he calmly dislodges it and casually says "Ooo. That hurt!"
