Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene, we see Solly relaxing in a bath when suddenly the window above him is shattered. What historical event are we about to witness from Solly's point of view?

Answer: Kristallnacht

Kristallnacht, or "Night of Broken Glass", occurred the night of November 9-10, 1938. About 250 synagogues and 7,000 other Jewish-owned buildings were destroyed through Germany and occupied lands. Also, nearly 30,000 Jews were arrested or sent to concentration camps.

It occurred as supposed retribution for the assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, by a Jewish woman in Paris.
2. When Solly returns home wearing a Nazi jacket to cover himself, his family is in mourning. Who, laid out on the kitchen table, had been killed that evening?

Answer: His sister

His sister Bertha was killed. In his autobiography, Solomon says his sister was shot while on a death march, not during the attack on the family's home as portrayed in the movie.
3. Sometime after the attack on their home, where in Poland does Solly and his remaining family move?

Answer: Lodz

Lodz is where Solly's father was born. They obtained passports and documents stating they were Polish and Solly's father insisted they were now Polish and non-Jewish, to prevent further attacks on the family.
4. While in Lodz, the family lived upstairs from a movie theater. There Solly befriends a woman named Basia who runs the theater. What deformity does Basia have that would get her executed when the German army finds her?

Answer: hunchback

Basia is a hunchback who falls in love with Solly during his family's two-year stay in Lodz. When the Germans invade Poland, Solly and his brother Isaac are sent away by their father, farther east toward the Soviet Union. Basia, crying and trying to run after them, is left to her eventual fate at the hands of the Nazis.
5. After getting separated from his brother, Isaac, Solly is sent to an orphanage in Grodno and taught how to be a good communist. When the Germans arrive and realize he speaks fluent German and Russian, he becomes a translator during interrogations. Whose Russian passport does he translate first?

Answer: the brother of Josef Stalin

Solly uses the name Josef Peters and invents a story about why he was in a Soviet orphanage for nearly two years. The German soldiers assume the Soviets killed his parents and "adopt" him (since Solly is a minor and can't actually be in the army) as their good-luck charm since he identified Stalin's brother.
6. Because he is still a minor, Solly is sent to a prestigious Hitler Youth school in Braunschweig. One of the classes he must take is about eugenics. The professor selects Solly to use as an example to teach about the supposed differences between Jews and Aryans. What does the professor say about Solly to the rest of the class after the examination?

Answer: He says Solly is from good Aryan ancestry.

The scene is drawn out, slowly unfolding as the professor makes measurements and cross-checks them with what dimensions Jews and Aryans are supposed to have. After building up the suspense, the professor declares Solly to be solidly Aryan, although not a perfect example.
7. Since Solly must hide his circumcision, he bathes when nobody is around. In one scene, Robert, a soldier in his unit, appears next to Solly while he's taking a bath and discovers Solly is Jewish. What does Robert admit to calm Solly's fear of being outed?

Answer: Robert tells him he is homosexual.

Robert, an actor before the war, admits he is gay and thinks Solly is too since he always bathed away from the other men in the unit. He and Solly become friends after the encounter, as they both are hiding secrets that would get them killed by the Nazis.
8. After becoming friends with Robert, what happens to him while Solly is translating Russian communications the Germans had tapped?

Answer: He is shot by a sniper.

The sniper turns out to be the person Solly is translating for the German soldiers. He says the sniper saw two Germans standing up and was going to shoot them. Just afterward, two of the soldiers next to him get shot. Robert tries to drag one into the trench and is himself shot and killed.
9. After being captured by the Soviets, Solly is close to being executed when somebody standing in a line of recently freed Jews sees him. Who recognizes Solly, thus saving him from execution?

Answer: his brother Isaac

His brother sees him and convinces the Soviets about to execute Solly that he is Jewish. In his autobiography, Solomon says it was only then that he learned what the Nazis were doing during the Holocaust and eventually finds out his father, mother, and sister were all killed, leaving only he and his two brothers alive.
10. The movie ends on an old man singing the Jewish hymn "Hine Ma Tov". Who is the old man singing the hymn?

Answer: Solomon Perel

Solomon learned his father, mother, and sister died during the Holocaust. He eventually emigrated to Palestine and fought in the Israeli Army after the creation of Israel in 1948. The hymn he is singing at the end of the movie translates to "Behold how good and how pleasing if people could sit together in unity".
