Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 30 premiered in 1996 and helped Leonardo DiCaprio shoot to stardom as one of two star crossed lovers. An adaptation of a classic play, this film co-stars Paul Rudd as DiCaprio's rival for his beloved's affection.

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

Did you pick "Titanic"? An easy mistake, however it was "Romeo and Juliet" that opened in 1996 ("Titanic" debuted in 1997).
"Romeo and Juliet" is of course one of many adaptations of Shakespeare's play in which the children of two rival families fall in love. This version was updated so that it took place in the present day in California and the characters used guns instead of swords, but still used Shakespearean dialogue.
Lucky for me I was in my freshman year of high school when this version came out and after reading the play we got to take a school-sponsored field trip to the movie theater, and in a theater full of 14-year-old girls, there was a collective sigh as DiCaprio entered the screen. Ahhhhh....
2. Number 29 is an independent film that went on to be the highest grossing romantic comedy of its time. Starring an unknown actress, it includes all the elements of a good romantic comedy; a transformation from mousy girl to pretty girl, finding love and independence, and a big wedding.

Answer: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Nia Vardolos wrote and starred in this 2003 movie in which she breaks out of her mousy girl shell and finds love with a non-Greek teacher, played by John Corbett. This was such a funny movie, and an unexpected hit. It was produced by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson and was the big-screen debut of NSync's Joey Fatone as cousin Angelo.
3. Number 28 stars Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn as three women who find support in each other when their husbands leave them for younger women. It has the tagline "Don't Get Mad, Get Everything".

Answer: The First Wives Club

This 1996 film stars Hawn, Midler and Keaton as three wives who seek revenge on their husbands and the young women they were left for. It was a big hit and earned over 100 million dollars, which is rare for a movie starring three fifty-year old women. Also interesting: the three stars are all born within six weeks of one another and all celebrated their fiftieth birthdays while making this movie. (Hawn is the oldest born November 1945, while Keaton is the youngest born January 1946).
4. Number 27 is a 1993 film that follows four young Chinese-American women who, through a series of flashbacks, come to understand the lives and troubles of their mothers who grew up in China. This search helps them understand their difficult mother/daughter relationships and the differences they have from their mothers.

Answer: The Joy Luck Club

This is one of the movies I haven't seen on the list, but I'm trying to see soon. This was an adaptation of a novel by Amy Tan of the same name. An interesting fact about this movie, Ming-Na (who plays one of the daughters, Jing-Mei Woo) starred on the NBC Series "ER" in which her character was also named Jing-Mei.
5. Number 26 stars Julia Roberts as (surprise!) the most famous actress in the world. She had a chance meeting with a regular guy when he spills orange juice on her on the street and so begins this great love story as he copes with her fame and she must figure out her priorities. What is the name of this movie, and the neighborhood where it was set and shot?

Answer: Notting Hill

Julia Roberts plays Anna Scott, a high profile actress who falls in love with a regular guy, travel book store owner Will (Hugh Grant). A few years after this movie's release Julia's life echoed the movie's premise as she fell in love with a regular guy, cameraman Danny Moder with whom she now has three children.
6. Number 25 stars Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey as two people who meet when he saves her from a runaway dumpster. She begins to fall for him, but he is engaged to another woman, and neglects to tell her this little fact.

Answer: The Wedding Planner

This movie, which premiered in 2001, was one of the first movies that showed that Jennifer Lopez could really act. In it she breaks the number one rule of wedding planning "Don't fall in love with the groom!" Although in her defense, she didn't know he was the groom when she met him.
7. Number 24 is a 1995 teen comedy that made slang terms like "as if", "whatever" and "my bad" as part of normal teen conversation. We see the main character fail her drivers test, set up her teachers in hopes of getting a better grade and fall in love with both a gay guy and her stepbrother.

Answer: Clueless

"Clueless" not only introduced us to new slang terms but also included the breakthrough performance of Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Sisto and Donald Faison who have all gone on to have successful careers in TV and film.
8. In number 23 a former Secret Service Agent watches over the biggest singer in the world, played by one of the biggest singers in the world. The singer is being stalked by a crazed fan and the agent worries that he won't be able to protect her because his last client, the president, was shot (though not on his watch).

Answer: The Bodyguard

This 1992 movie, starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston was nominated for two Oscars for Best Original Song ("I Have Nothing" and "Run To You"). It also single handedly brought back the dying art of movie soundtracks when the soundtrack (including a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You") sold millions upon millions of copies. And Whitney Houston, the most talented singer in the world, did a great job playing... the most talented singer in the world.
9. Number 22 is another Brat Pack classic in which Molly Ringwald goes to a high-school dance, has her birthday forgotten, lets a geek borrow her panties, and gets groped by Grandma! Yikes! Yet she still manages to end up with the dreamiest guy in school.

Answer: Sixteen Candles

"Sixteen Candles" takes place on the 16th birthday of Samantha (Molly Ringwald) whose special day was eclipsed by her sister's marriage and her grandparents arrival to her house with their exchange student, Long Duck Dong. In this movie we also get a glimpse of two future stars as John and Joan Cusack appear as two geeks at the high school dance and on the school bus.
10. Number 21 includes a classic setting for chick flicks: weddings! Hugh Grant tries to woo Andie McDowell in this film that has a lot of coupling, uncoupling and recoupling as couples get married and divorced.

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

In this 1994 classic, Hugh Grant plays Charles, a foppish British man who is dragged from wedding to wedding to wedding to funeral until he finally reaches his own wedding. But will he marry the mysterious American Carrie (Andie McDowell) or someone else?

Hope you liked the quiz! Look for parts 1, 2, 4 and 5 which contain the remaining movies.
