Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who is extraordinarily paranoid and untrusting himself. He won't share details of his work with his very own business partner or his girlfriend; he won't let anyone into his apartment and always makes phone calls from pay phones. On his latest job, he has been hired by someone calling himself The Director He wants Caul to record a couple's conversations and turn the tapes over to him, through his assistant Martin Stett, played by Harrison Ford.

However, Caul begins to question his own principles and career when he suspects the two he is currently recording may be soon murdered.

Answer: Absolute Power

Gene Hackman plays President Allen Richmond, who is roughing up a woman he is having an extra-marital affair with. Matters get out of hand and she is shot and killed by two secret service agents. Clint Eastwood plays Luther Whitney, the thief who was perpetrating his last heist when he secretly witnesses the murder and its cover up. Harris plays Detective Seth Frank, who is assigned to investigate the murder that Whitney ends up being accused of. Detective Frank is not completely convinced of Whitney's guilt.

Answer: The Firm

Tom Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, the young lawyer seduced by the dark side, the money and material gifts showered on him by a Memphis law firm. When two members of the firm are murdered, the FBI sends Agent Wayne Tarrance, Ed Harris, to investigate. He corners McDeere and tells McDeere that he has no choice but to help the FBI and bring down the firm, which will destroy McDeere's reputation and career.

The other choice is for McDeere to stay with the firm and eventually be prosecuted or killed if he tries to leave the firm. McDeere begins searching for his own way out.

Answer: A Few Good Men

In this Rob Reiner film, Tom Cruise plays Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer picked to defend two Marines accused of murdering another Marine. His reputation for being lazy and for plea bargaining has contributed to his appointment. However, he soon learns that he has what it takes to be a successful trial lawyer who can, after all, "handle the truth." Kevin Bacon plays a Marine lawyer, Captain Jack Ross. Ross is the prosecuting attorney seeking to court martial the two Marines.

He finds himself not only on the other side of the court as Kaffee's opponent in basketball, but also in the courtroom as they battle each other.

Answer: Mystic River

Kevin Bacon, playing Sean Devine; Tim Robbins, playing Dave Boyle; and Sean Penn, playing Jimmy Markum were childhood friends. Jimmy and Sean watch one day as Dave is abducted by men who later sexually molest him. As adults, Jimmy is an ex-convict whose daughter has been murdered and Sean is the homicide detective assigned to the case. Dave is struggling with his past and ends up being the suspect in the murder of Jimmy's daughter.

The film was directed by the great Clint Eastwood.

Answer: Arlington Road

Jeff Bridges plays Michael Faraday, a college professor who seems to be suffering from a paranoid notion that his neighbor, Oliver Lang, played by Tim Robbins, is planning a terrorist attack of death and destruction. The neighbors do seem to act suspiciously at moments - Faraday's FBI-agent wife did die in an anti-terrorist operation, and he has devoted his life to what appears to be an obsession with the study of terrorism.

The film increases in intensity as the viewer begins to wonder what is real and what isn't.

Answer: True Grit

Jeff Bridges stars as "Rooster" Cogburn, and Matt Damon, as Ranger LaBoeuf in the Coen Brothers interpretation of "True Grit". Mattie Ross, played by Hailee Steinfeld, hires the roughest man she can find to help her hunt for the man who killed her father.

This man of true grit, Cogburn, is a lazy, crude drunk but he ultimately rises to the occasion. LaBoeuf seeks the glory that he will achieve if he brings a wanted man back to Texas for justice; he wants to be the ranger that always gets his man.

Answer: The Good Shepherd

Matt Damon plays agent Edward Wilson during the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He suspects that the U.S.'s failure stems from a leak from within the fledgling CIA to Fidel Castro. As he investigates, the audience is allowed to look back over his life as he is recruited by the CIA's predecessor, the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), marries and starts a family. Wilson is initially a patriotic idealist, but as his family life crumbles, due to his work, and his work exposes him to more and more corruption, his idealism is destroyed. Keir Dullea stars as Senator John Russell, Sr.

The film was directed by Robert de Niro. Other actors in the film were de Niro, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Joe Pesci, and William Hurt.

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey

In this 1968 Stanley Kubrick film based on the Arthur C. Clark novel, HAL 9000 attempts to kill Keir Dullea's character Dr. Dave Bowman, who is likewise trying to "kill" HAL by shutting him off. HAL has malfunctioned in deep space and becomes an obstacle in mankind's race to discover the origin and purpose of the monoliths. By the way, HAL 9000's voice was supplied by Douglas Rain.
