Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The following title card can be found in which 1915 silent movie? "Crockett reminded them they were all fighting for one cause -- Texas."

Answer: Martyrs of the Alamo

David Crockett (Allan Sears) wants the men to know what their mission is in "Martyrs of the Alamo," a telling of the famous Battle of the Alamo. All the familiar characters are here: Crockett, James Bowie, General [sic] Travis and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Santa Anna's men surround the fort and defeat the Texicans.

This is not the best work from director D.W. Griffith. I will "remember the Alamo" but not this movie.
2. You can read this title card in which 1916 silent movie? "CAPTAIN NEMO - In his cabin on board the submarine, Nautilus."

Answer: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

This title card gives the audience its first look at Captain Nemo aboard his submarine. Loosely based on "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne, this movie brings innovative underwater photography to the screen. Nemo (Allen Holubar) builds the Nautilus and searches for his daughter. Nemo looks like a thin Santa Claus smoking a very long pipe.

Not my favorite silent movie; watching it left me high and dry.
3. "Wouldn't it be marvelous if the two natures in man could be separated - housed in different bodies!" is an intertitle from which 1920 horror movie?

Answer: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

After much temptation to explore his darker side, Dr. Edward Jekyll poses this question to Dr. Lanyon who answers in the negative. This version of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a screen adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson's well-known novel about a doctor who develops a drug to switch between two completely different personalities. Jekyll, good; Hyde, bad. John Barrymore (Drew's grandfather) stars in the title role.

The other choices were stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
4. "All for one and one for all!" is a famous saying on a title card from which 1921 silent movie?

Answer: The Three Musketeers

"The Three Musketeers" is based on the book by Alexandre Dumas and stars a very energetic Douglas Fairbanks Sr. as D'Artagnan. He joins Athos, Porthos and Aramis and their familiar rallying cry to save Queen Consort Anne of Austria from cold, cruel, callous Cardinal Richelieu.
5. This title card - "If you would save the Yellow Hair, consent to be my squaw!" - can be found in which 1921 silent movie adapted from a James Fenimore Cooper book?

Answer: The Last of the Mohicans

Two young British women search for their father during the French and Indian Wars in "The Last of the Mohicans." Magua (Wallace Beery) and some French soldiers attack them. Magua gives Cora Munro (Barbara Bedford) the chance to be with him or watch her sister, the blonde Alice, (Lillian Hall), die. Chief Great Serpent aka Chingachgook and his son, Uncas, the last of the Mohicans, attempt to save them.
6. A young Jackie Coogan says, "Please sir, I want some more," in which 1922 silent movie?

Answer: Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist's (Coogan) mother died giving birth. Sent to a workhouse, nine-year old Oliver boldly asked for more gruel causing much ado among the administration. He is made to work for an undertaker and is eventually taken in by a band of thieves lead by Fagin (Lon Chaney).

The viewer will discover that Oliver comes from a wealthy family. Chaney's makeup is amazing, as always. Charles Dickens wrote the book.
7. "Friar Tuck--" is introduced with this two-word title card in which 1922 silent movie?

Answer: Robin Hood

In "Robin Hood" the secondary characters were introduced one at a time, each with a single title card. Robin Hood (Douglas Fairbanks) and Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett rescue Lady Marian Fitzwalter (Enid Bennett) from the wicked Prince John. A nine acre set with a massive castle added to the cost of this movie making it one of the most expensive of the silent movie era.
8. The title character of which 1923 silent movie was described like this: "Deaf - half-blind - shut off from his fellow-men by his deformities the bells were the only voice of his groping soul."?

Answer: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Set in 15th century Paris, this version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," featuring Lon Chaney as the grotesque Quasimodo, is adapted from Victor Hugo's novel of the same name. Quasimodo, the cathedral's misshapen bell ringer, is shown kindness by the beautiful Gypsy girl, Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller). Will he repay her concern when she is to be executed for a crime she not commit?
9. In which 1924 silent movie can one read "Wendy Moira Angela Darling" on the movie screen?

Answer: Peter Pan

This is how Wendy responds when Peter Pan asks her name. Betty Bronson, in the title role, leads the Darling children to Never Never Land. "Peter Pan," a tale about a boy who does not want to grow up, was originally a 1904 play by J.M. Barrie.
10. Which 1925 silent feature has this title card? "Ho! Romans! Saw you ever a Jew in a chariot?"

Answer: Ben-Hur

"Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" is about young Jewish man named Ben Hur (Ramon Novarro) and Messala (Francis X. Bushman). Their friendship becomes strained when Messala becomes a Roman Centurion and Ben-Hur is falsely arrested and sent as a slave to a galley ship. Later, as time passes, Messala mocks Ben-Hur with this taunt just before their grandiose chariot race.

After the race Ben-Hur is reunited with his leprous mother and sister who receive a miraculous cure. I enjoy this movie much more than the 1959 "Ben-Hur". Lew Wallace wrote the novel.
