Martin Sheen played Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Lee was the main Confederate General for the Army of Northern Virginia and was nicknamed by some as "Bobby Lee". He has also starred in the TV series "The West Wing", and has narrated several National Geographic documentaries like "Secrets of the Titanic".

He also played Jack in the movie "Bobby" which was about Senator Robert Kennedy who was assassinated in 1968.

Jeff Daniels played the part of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Colonel of the 20th Maine. Chamberlain was widely known to have used a bayonet charge to defend Little Round Top during the second day of battle. Jeff Daniels has played in other movies and docudramas.

He featured in the movie "Dumb & Dumber" with Jim Carey and starred as George Washington in the docudrama "The Crossing". He also played a detective in the movie "Speed".

Sam Elliot played Cavalry leader Jon Buford. Buford held Lee's army at Gettysburg until the rest of the Army of Potomac showed up. Sam Elliott was the voice over for the meat commercials and starred in several movies such as "Barnyard" as the voice for Ben the Cow and "The Alibi". He did many other TV movies such as "Avenger".

Tom Berenger played the part of General James Longstreet. Longstreet was Lee's second-hand man; often referred to by Lee as "my old warhorse". Berenger played in a couple of big screen movies such as "Sliver" and "Major League 2". He also appeared in several sitcoms such as "Cheers" for two episodes, "Law & Order" for one episode and "Ally McBeal" for several episodes.

Richard Jordan played General Lewis Armistead. Armistead helped lead Pickett's charge and was more noted as the man who had his hat on his sword as a show of support for his troops. Jordan played in "Raise the Titanic!" as Dirk Pitt. He also played in "The Hunt for Red October." He appeared in the TV series "The Equalizer".

He died on August 30, 1993 after filming "Gettysburg". He died of a brain tumor.

General George Pickett was played by Stephen Lang. Pickett was more noted as the man who lead Pickett's charge on the last day of the battle. Pickett lost all of his commanding generals either through being injured or killed on the field. He was also quoted as saying "General Lee, I have no division now!" after Lee asked him to get his men ready for another counter attack by the Union. Pickett never forgave Lee for that. Lang played in several films such as "Fire Down Below".

He also did the voice narration of George Washington in the mini series "Liberty: The American Revolution".

Ted Turner did play a part in the movie. He played the part of Col. Waller T. Patton. In the movie, he was seen standing on the fence at the Emmittsburg Road shouting, "Let's go, boys!" before getting shot down off the fence. Hey, he helped produce the film, why not be in it?

Kevin Conway played the fiery Irishman, Buster Kilrain. In the movie, Kilrain was Col. Chamberlain's right-hand man. He died in the movie from two gunshot wounds to the armpit. Conway also played in several "JAG" episodes where he and a bunch of Vietnam vets went and got themselves into trouble. Conway's character was mortally wounded and died at the end of the episode.

William Morgan Sheppard not only played the part of General Isaac Trimble, but he narrated the opening segment of the movie where he described how the battle of Gettysburg came to be. He was born in London, but studied in Ireland. He was in many Broadway productions and was in one "Star Trek; The Next Generation" episode as Dr. Graves. Graves implanted his thoughts into Data in that episode.

There is not much written about Brian Mallon. Mallon played the part of General Winfield Scott Hancock who was wounded at Gettysburg. Hancock would not be moved until the battle was decided. Mallon also played the same role of Hancock in "Gods & Generals" which was a prequel to "Gettysburg". He also played in "The Gangs of New York" and "The Bookie's Lament".
