Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the less-than-fantastic vehicle that was used to kill the original King Kong?

Answer: A bi-plane

Cop: "Well, Denham, the airplanes got him."
Denham: "Oh no, it wasn't the airplanes. It was beauty killed the beast."

"King Kong" (1933) is one of the most popular monster movies ever made, and the beast's tragic death is one of the more poignant movie moments in any fantastic film.
2. What fantastic device was used to stop Godzilla the first time he attacked Japan in "Godzilla, King of the Monsters"?

Answer: The Oxygen Destroyer

In the original "Gojira" ((1954), released as "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" in the US in 1956), Dr. Serizawa reluctantly uses his device, which worked by drawing oxygen out of everything around it, to destroy the giant reptile. He kills himself while using it, so that no one could ever rebuild a weapon that had the potential to be deadlier and more destructive than Godzilla!
3. What was the name of the rather-original scheme that temporarily saved the Earth from the menace of "Gammera the Invincible"?

Answer: Plan Z

Plan Z was odd in that it had scientists using flaming fuel to lure Gammera, the giant fire-breathing flying turtle, onto a special platform. That particular site was actually the top of a huge rocket, and the beast was then launched into space. Gamera (as he was more popularly spelled) was not only to return in numerous sequels, but also became a defender of mankind in most of those films.
4. Out of what special material was the original Mechagodzilla constructed?

Answer: Space Titanium

The original Mechagodzilla was created by an alien race that wanted to take over the world, and the robot was originally disguised as Godzilla himself. After a somewhat difficult battle for the Big G, this Mechagodzilla was recreated and controlled by yet another alien race (with the help of Dr. Mifune, a disillusioned scientist) in "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975).
5. What special weapon was deployed unsuccessfully against the ancient menace known as "It!"?

Answer: An atomic bomb

"It!" (1967) was a modern re-telling of the Yiddish legend of the Golem. Roddy McDowall portrayed the somewhat off-balanced controller of this Golem, which could stand up to the fury of an atomic blast.
6. What was the name of the giant robot that assisted Godzilla in his battle with Space Godzilla?

Answer: Mogera

The robot was based on the tank-like alien robot that attacked Japan in the classic, science fiction space opera "The Mysterians" (1957), which was named Mogella in publicity materials for that film.

FYI: Meganuron were the insectoid creatures seen during the first half of "Rodan" (1958), while Ogra was the name by which "Gorgo" (1967) was known by the inhabitants of Nara Island.
7. What was the name of the flying craft that mechanically merged with Mechagodzilla to form Supermechagodzilla?

Answer: Garuda

In "Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla" (1993), Garuda was shown to have been the prototype for the anti-Godzilla giant robot form (being shelved after G-Force decided they needed more brute force to stop the beast). One pterosaur enthusiast kept working with the vehicle and showed the authorities how the two robots could combine for additional firepower. Too bad Godzilla and Rodan found out that they could combine themselves as well.

FYI: This was also the second of the three giant robots (as of 2005) to be called Mechagodzilla.

Also, for you completists out there, Gamackera was one of the names applied to the giant mantises from "Son of Godzilla", while Gabera was the Bill-the-Cat-like monster that Minya tangled with in "Godzilla's Revenge". Gamera, well, needs no introduction.
8. What was the name of the physics-defying weapon that was created to destroy the similarly physics-defying menace of "The Giant Claw"?

Answer: A Masic Atom Projector

"The Giant Claw" (1957) that beset Jeff Morrow and Mara Corday was one of the worst monster-puppets ever set to film. The story, while earnestly well-acted, was just as bad, as a giant vulture from an anti-matter universe comes to Earth and eats almost anything it wants to, being protected by an anti-matter force field. Morrow's scientist devises a special particle projector to destroy the field so regular weapons can kill the awkward animal.

This was also the first movie to be released in the USA that featured a giant monster that could fly.
9. Super-strength, flight, explosive darts, thunderball fists and the ability to grow to giant-size are all weapons used by what cybernetic fighter?

Answer: Infra-Man

"Infra-Man" (1975) was a rare Chinese entry into the giant monster genre. A young man named Rayna volunteer to be bionically-transformed into the technological super-hero to battle the giant monsters and evil hordes led by the beautiful, but evil, Princess Dragon-Mom.
10. What was the unique weapon used by Kiryu, the third mechanical monster to bear the name of Mechagodzilla?

Answer: The Absolute-Zero Gun

The Absolute-Zero Gun was a truly fearsome and destructive weapon in "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla" (2003). Unfortunately, Mechagodzilla never actually managed to hit Godzilla with it (and almost caused more damage than the radioactive monster did), after the robot's handlers lost control of it several times.

FYI: Dimension Tide was a device that was used to try and defeat Godzilla in "Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus" (2001). Thunderball Fists were used by someone else in another question in this quiz (sorry to all you folks reading ahead for hints).
