1. At the start of the movie, we see Lisa crying in Susanna's lap. Do we see the preceeding scene to this later in the movie?

Answer: Yes

Georgina happens to be sweeping up the syringe that Lisa was going to kill herself with. We see this the night before Susanna is due to leave. Lisa, Georgina and Polly are having a 'read aloud'.
2. What is the name of the ward where Susanna is to stay?

Answer: South Bell

When first going into the women's ward, Valerie informs Susanna of it's nickname, South Bell.
3. What's the song that Lisa and Susanna sing to Polly, after she has a breakdown over the condition of her face?

Answer: Downtown

The song was played three times in the movie. During the taxi cab ride to Claymoore, when Susanna and Lisa sing to Polly, and the end credits. The overall song is most likely symbolism for the movie- that every now and then people need to break free, have fun and forget their everyday worries.
4. Do either of Susanna's parents have Borderline Personality Disorder?

Answer: It never really says

If you watch closely, the mother questions Melvin about "This Borderline business mentioned on the phone". Then Susanna asks if it's genetic and her parents become uneasy and scold her. Her mother cries but never says if she has it, or the father. But it would seem they did by some of their actions.
5. What is Borderline Personality Disorder?

Answer: Basically, a self-image problem. The person views themselves as abnormal.

Borderling Personality Disorder or BPD is a real mental illness. Definition-"Borderline personality disorder is a condition characterized by impulsive actions, mood instability, and chaotic relationships."
Other info- "Personality disorders are chronic patterns of behavior that impair relationships and work. The cause of BPD is unknown. People with BPD are impulsive in areas that have a potential for self-harm, such as drug use, drinking, and other risk-taking behaviors.

6. Borderline Personality Disorder can be cured.

Answer: Depends on the person

Borderline Personality can be cured, but not in everyone. (The person also should be watched for relapse.) It depends on how hard the person is willing to work on getting better, and how they use resources, etc. Susanna saw that in order to live a whole life, she would need to try and get better, therefore, she represented the approximately 50% of people willing to get better.
7. By watching this movie, can you learn something about mentally ill people?

Answer: Yes

This movie shows that mentally ill people are not crazy. You can't just pick one out of a crowd and know they are ill. In the 1960's, and even today, sometimes people thought that you could. "Girl, Interrupted" shows that mentally ill people are normal and have hectic lives like you and me.
8. What exactly was Janet's reason for being in the hospital?

Answer: Anorexia Nervosa

Janet had what is now recognized as Anorexia Nervosa.
"Anorexia Nervosa is a disorder where the main characteristic is the restriction of food and the refusal to maintain a minimal normal body weight. Most Anorexics lose weight by restricting their food intake. Anorexics may start by limiting or excluding foods that they perceive as having high fat or caloric content.
Once the disorder of Anorexia Nervosa takes hold, the individual usually ends up with an extremely restrictive diet that is sometimes limited to only a small number of foods. Additional methods of weight loss for Anorexics can include vomiting, laxative abuse, diuretic abuse, insulin abuse, chew-spitting, and excessive exercise. . ."

9. What was the cat's name?

Answer: Ruby

Susanna took the cat back to the hospital with her after Daisy committed suicide. She ended up leaving the kitty there for Polly, who had taken a liking to Ruby.
10. Why did Susanna's boyfriend, Toby, show up at the hospital?

Answer: He was going to take her to Canada

Toby was running from the military draft. He thought running was a GOOD idea! He was wrong! Running from the U.S. millitary draft could get you in some major trouble! He figured that since Susanna was caught up in a mental hospital frenzy, he would assist her on his way up to Canada. Much to his surprise, she denied. Good for her!
