Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A future star of Westerns and other tough-guy movies made his film debut as a laboratory assistant in 'Revenge of the Creature', but his name didn't appear in the credits. Who was it?

Answer: Clint Eastwood

Perhaps best known for his gritty roles in Westerns such as 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' (1966), 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' (1976), and 'Pale Rider' (1985), and in cop movies such as those of the 'Dirty Harry' series (1971-88), Clint Eastwood also won Oscars for Best Director, for 'Unforgiven' (1992) and 'Million Dollar Baby' (2004).

In 1955's 'Revenge of the Creature' (a sequel to 'The Creature From the Black Lagoon'), Clint delivered a few lines about lab rats. A pity that his character wasn't as useful as Dirty Harry might have been: "Creature, you've gotta ask yourself a question...".

He also made early uncredited appearances in 'Tarantula' (1955) and several other films before he finally gained some recognition.
2. Surprisingly, the name of which famous comic actor was missing from the opening credits in the 1982 comedy movie 'Tootsie'?

Answer: Bill Murray

Yes, Bill was indeed "unbilled" for his performance as Jeff Slater, the roommate of Dustin Hoffman's character Michael/Dorothy, in 1982's cross-dressing flick 'Tootsie' (at least at the start of the movie). According to celebritywonder, Murray agreed to the omission of his name from the opening credits so that audiences would not associate 'Tootsie' with the kind of comedy movies that he had previously appeared in, such as 'Meatballs' (1979) and 'Caddyshack' (1980). Murray would go on to star in films such as 'Ghostbusters' (1984), 'Groundhog Day' (1993), and 'Lost in Translation' (2003).
3. Which star of 'The French Connection' (1971) and 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972) was hilarious in his uncredited performance as a blind man, in a monstrous black-and-white Mel Brooks film of 1974?

Answer: Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman made a name for himself playing no-nonsense characters in films such as 'The Conversation' (1974), 'Mississippi Burning' (1988), 'Crimson Tide' (1995), 'Behind Enemy Lines' (2001), among many others. He won an Oscar for his performance as New York detective, Popeye Doyle, in 'The French Connection'.

But no one could forget his brief comic performance as a blind hermit in Mel Brooks' 'Young Frankenstein'. The poor monster (played by Peter Boyle) was burnt in some pretty nasty places, thanks to the old man's bumbling kindness.
4. Which usually zany, but also versatile actor went uncredited for his role in 1988's 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' because of a fear that the film may turn out to be a dud?

Answer: Robin Williams

Having already starred in the television show 'Mork and Mindy' (1978-1982), and films such as 'The World According to Garp' (1982) and 'Good Morning, Vietnam' (1987), Robin Williams played the King of the Moon (a role that was originally taken by Sean Connery before he pulled out) in Terry Gilliam's 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen'.

However, Williams' agents feared that it would stain his career if the movie proved to be a flop, so his name was not included in the credits. Williams went on to star in 'Dead Poets Society' (1989), 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993), 'Patch Adams' (1998), and many other popular films.
5. Which "difficult to kill" star of action movies made a brief uncredited appearance in the 1982 courtroom drama 'The Verdict'?

Answer: Bruce Willis

Before his star-making role in television's 'Moonlighting' (1985-89), Bruce Willis appeared as an extra in 'The Verdict' (he could be seen to the left of Paul Newman's character when the verdict was read for the plaintiff). Willis went on to make many popular films, including 'Pulp Fiction' (1994), 'Armageddon' (1998), 'The Sixth Sense' (1999), 'The Whole Nine Yards' (2000), and of course the 'Die Hard' series of films (1988-2007), for which he is perhaps best known.
6. Each of the following actors made cameo appearances in remakes of films that they had previously starred in. Which one was not given a credit for his "hair-raising" part in the remake?

Answer: Charlton Heston ('Planet of the Apes' - 2001)

Already famous for his historical roles in 'The Ten Commandments' (1956), 'Ben Hur' (1959), and 'El Cid' (1961), Charlton Heston became a legend of futuristic science fiction by starring in 1968's 'Planet of the Apes'. In the 2005 remake, and under very hairy make-up, he played Zaius, the dying father of the simian villain (General Thade), who revealed to his son the true history of man and ape on the planet.

Heston died on April 5, 2008.
7. You might use logic for this question. Which future star of 'Star Trek' had a small uncredited part in 'Them!', a 1954 movie about giant killer ants?

Answer: Leonard Nimoy

Long before facing humans and other horrible aliens as the very logical Mr Spock in the 'Star Trek' television and film series, Leonard Nimoy was faced with giant ants in the 50's Sci-Fi movie 'Them!'. He briefly appeared as an army sergeant (very little would have been gained by employing the Vulcan neck pinch, in this case). Nimoy also starred in the 1978 remake of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers', and he directed a number of films, including 'Star Trek III' (1984), 'Star Trek IV' (1986), and 'Three Men and a Baby' (1987).
8. Which "shining" Oscar-winning actor appeared in the 1987 comedy-drama 'Broadcast News', but did not appear in the film's credits?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Screen legend Jack Nicholson, star of 'The Shining' (1980), 'Chinatown' (1974), 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' (1975), 'A Few Good Men' (1992), 'As Good as It Gets' (1997), and many other films, played the gun evening news anchorman, Bill Rorich, in the James L. Brooks-directed 'Broadcast News', but his name wasn't listed in the credits.
9. Which star of 'The Godfather' and 'Apocalypse Now' gave an uncredited performance in the 1974 film 'The Conversation'?

Answer: Robert Duvall

Famous for his performance as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in 1979's 'Apocalypse Now', Robert Duvall also starred in 'The Godfather' (1972) and 'The Godfather Part II' (1974), as well as 'Network' (1976), 'Tender Mercies' (1983), and 'Deep Impact' (1998).

In Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Conversation', Duvall played the man who originally commissioned the surveillance that recorded "the conversation".
10. Which star of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' (1958) and 'Cleopatra' (1963) wasn't listed in the credits for her small part in the 1979 movie 'Winter Kills'?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

A star of numerous films, including 'National Velvet' (1944) and 'The Taming of the Shrew' (1967), the much-married Elizabeth Taylor also won Oscars for her roles in 'Butterfield 8' (1960) and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' (1966). In William Richert's 'Winter Kills' (a black comedy about events surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy), she played Lola Comante. Taylor was also uncredited for appearances in 'Jane Eyre' (1944), 'The White Cliffs of Dover' (1944), 'Quo Vadis' (1951), and 'Anne of the Thousand Days' (1969).
