Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stanley and Grace were blessed with two daughters, Heidi and Dawn. Grace was a sergeant who served in Iraq. On the other hand, what was Stanley's profession?

Answer: A superstore manager

In the beginning of the movie, Grace called from Iraq. However, no one was at home at that moment so she left a message on the answering machine. She said she loved and missed her family very much and she was not sure when she was going to be able to call again. Back in Minnesota, Stanley asked the store workers to huddle up for their morning cheer before work. On the very next day, when his manager did not show up for work, Rick called Stanley to check if he was all right. During their road trip, Dawn also asked her father what did he do all day at work. Stanley replied that he sold stuff at the superstore.
2. Stanley was in the shower when the doorbell rang. He was greeted by two uniformed officials. They came to inform Stanley about a devastating news - his wife had been killed in Iraq. Did he go to work that day?

Answer: No

Stanley knew something was wrong when he saw the two uniformed officials. One of the officials informed Stanley about his wife's death. Stanley was overwhelmed by the sad news and he decided not to go to work that day. He stayed at home and waited for his two daughters to come back from school.
3. Stanley decided to take his two daughters on a road trip. When asked by her dad where would she like to go, what was Dawn's reply?

Answer: Enchanted Gardens

Enchanted Gardens was an amusement park that was located in Florida. Heidi mocked her sister's idea because she knew her father would disagree. Surprisingly, her father agreed. Stanley also told Heidi not to worry about her homework and his job.
4. Stanley told the girls that they were going to stop and visit their grandmother. Who did they meet at their grandmother's house?

Answer: Uncle John

The girls' grandmother was not at home but they met Uncle John, who was Stanley's younger brother. John informed Stanley that he was studying for his GRE (Graduate Record Examination). Stanley later asked John to take the girls out for dinner. He told John that he would just stay at home to take a little nap. Little did John know that Stanley wept over his wife's death.
5. John was having dinner with Heidi and Dawn when he told them how Stanley cheated to get into the military. When they returned home, how did John know about Grace's tragedy?

Answer: He received a call from Mary.

During their dinner at a fast food restaurant, Uncle John told the girls that Stanley had one of his friends take a photo of the physical examiner's eye chart and then he memorized the letters. The military eventually found out about Stanley's poor eyesight and he was kicked out of the academy.

When they returned home, John received a call from Mary. He learned the news about his brother's wife's death.
6. After a long journey, Stanley stopped at a department store. Heidi and Dawn asked for their father's permission to have their ears pierced. Did Stanley agree to let the girls do so?

Answer: Yes

At first, Stanley was reluctant to do so. He informed Heidi and Dawn that they could only have their ears pierced when they were thirteen. After having second thoughts, and much persuasion from his daughters, he agreed.
7. During the long journey, Stanley made several phone calls back to his own house. He did so simply because he wanted to hear his late wife's voice on the answering machine.

Answer: True

One night, Stanley stopped his car in front of a shop and made his first call. He "informed" Grace that he was taking the girls on a road trip and they were having a really good time. Stanley called again using a payphone at a gas station. Once again, he "informed" Grace that the reason he was calling was that he wanted to hear her voice on the answering machine.

He also told Grace that he and the girls were all right and they were in Florida.
8. Stanley and his two daughters enjoyed themselves on the park rides. Before visiting the museum, what item did Stanley buy for Dawn?

Answer: A balloon

Stanley bought a blue balloon with a picture of a bunny on it for Dawn. The blue balloon was a symbolic of her deceased mother, Grace. The movie poster also featured Stanley watching a blue balloon floating away.
9. Stanley knew that, sooner or later, he had to tell Heidi and Dawn the truth about their mother's death. He eventually broke the devastating news to his two daughters. Where did the scene take place?

Answer: At a beach

On their way back to Minnesota, Stanley brought Heidi and Dawn to a beach. He told the girls that soldiers sometimes got hurt; they even died in battle and that was what happened to the girls' mother. The girls broke into tears upon hearing the news.
10. "Grace was a brave woman. She enlisted in the army right out of high school. She met my father, Stanley Phillips, at boot camp in Fort Knox, Kentucky later that summer. They married after the training was over." Who delivered the eulogy during Grace's funeral?

Answer: Heidi

In the eulogy, Heidi also described her mother as a kind, generous and funny person. Previously, Heidi told John that when Dawn's watch beeped, it was her "time of day". Heidi explained further that her mother and Dawn set their watches at the same time everyday, so they knew they were both thinking of each other at the same moment.

The last scene of the film featured Stanley, Heidi and Dawn standing in front of Grace's tombstone. They waited for Dawn's watch to beep and they closed their eyes, thinking of Grace.
