Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."

Answer: Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)

This quote takes place in Vito Corleone's office, during the wedding reception of his daughter Connie (Talia Shire) to gangster Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). Singer Johnny Fontane (Al Martino) has complained to the Godfather that he won't be getting a role in an upcoming war movie that he really wanted.

When the Godfather says he will help, Fontane says, "It's too late, they start shooting in a week." Vito Corleone then says this quote. There is some speculation that this sequence was partially inspired by Frank Sinatra's role of Private Maggio in the war movie "From Here to Eternity" (for which Sinatra won the 1954 Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role).

Note: Later in the movie, when Michael Corleone says he plans to buy out Moe Green's Las Vegas casino interest, his brother Fredo says, "Hey, Mike, are you sure about that? Moe loves the business -- he never said nothin' to me about selling." Michael Corleone then says a similar quote.

He is not a choice in this question to avoid any confusion.
2. "Luca Brasi held a gun to his head and my father assured him that either his brains, or his signature, would be on the contract. That's a true story. That's my family, Kay, it's not me."

Answer: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino)

This quote also takes place during the wedding of Vito Corleone's daughter Connie (Talia Shire) to gangster Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). In this scene Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is talking to his girlfriend, Kay Adams (Diane Keaton), and tells her this story about his family. Other actors considered for the part of Michael included Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford and Ryan O'Neal.
3. "Mr. Corleone never asks a second favor once he's refused the first, understood?"

Answer: Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall)

Corleone consiglieri Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) has flown to Hollywood to deliver a request from Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to movie producer Jack Woltz (John Marley). He would like his friend, singer Johnny Fontane (Al Martino), to be given a role in an upcoming war movie being made by Woltz. Fontane is anxious to get this part because "it's a guy just like me. I, uh -- I wouldn't even have to act -- just be myself." But Woltz refuses the request, saying, "Johnny Fontane never gets that movie. That part is perfect for him, it'll make him a big star, and I'm gonna run him out of the business - and let me tell you why. Johnny Fontane ruined one of Woltz International's most valuable proteges." At dinner that evening, Woltz says, "...he should ask me anything else.

But this is one favor I can't give him." Hagen then replies with this quote.
4. "Never let anyone outside the family know what you're thinking."

Answer: Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)

In this scene rival mob boss Sollozzo is attempting to get the Godfather to help finance his narcotics business. He says, "I need, Don Corleone, those politicians that you carry in your pocket, like so many nickels and dimes." But the Godfather turns him down and says, "It's true, I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn't be friendly very long if they knew my business was drugs instead of gambling, which they rule as a harmless vice." Then Sonny says, "Aw, you're telling me that the Tattaglias guarantee our investment?" Clemenza and Tom realize Sonny's faux pas and look at each other in surprise.

After Sollozo leaves the room, Vito Corleone says this quote to Sonny.
5. "I don't like violence, Tom. I'm a businessman. Blood is a big expense."

Answer: Virgil Sollozzo (Al Lettieri)

After the assassination attempt on the Godfather, rival mobster Sollozzo kidnaps Tom Hagen to talk to him alone. Sollozzo tells Tom "Yeah, we got him outside his office just about an hour after we picked you up," and mistakenly thinks the Godfather is now dead.

He says to Tom, "I want you to help the Corleones, and I want you to help me." He wants Tom's help in getting the Corleone political protection for his drug business. After Tom says, "I'll do my best," Sollozzo says "Good. Now, you can go," and then adds this quote.
6. "Oh, Paulie? Won't see him no more."

Answer: Pete Clemenza (Richard Castellano)

After Sonny learns the Godfather's driver Paulie Gatto (John Martino) had a hand in the assassination attempt on the Godfather, he orders Clemenza "Paulie sold out the old man ... I don't want to see him again." Clemenza gets his opportunity when he, Pauli and Rocco Lampone (Tom Rosqui) go driving.

While the car is stopped for Clemenza to relieve himself at the side of the road, Rocco, sitting in the back seat, executes Paulie with a gunshot to the back of the head. When Sonny later asks, "How's Paulie?" Clemenza replies with this quote.
7. "How's the Italian food in this restaurant?"

Answer: Police Capt. Mark McCluskey (Sterling Hayden)

In the events leading up to this scene, the Corleone family has agreed Michael will kill both Captain McCluskey and Sollozzo in a meeting place to be decided by Sollozzo. After Michael is picked up by Sollozzo's car and it does a high-speed U-turn on a bridge to New Jersey, they arrive at a small Italian restaurant in the Bronx for what Capt. McCluskey and Sollozzo think is going to be a discussion over dinner to clear up any misunderstandings.

In this scene, Capt. McCluskey asks Sollozzo this quote as they prepare to order. Sollozzo replies, "Good -- try the veal -- it's the best in the city." After Michael retrieves a gun taped behind a toilet water tank in the bathroom (hidden there by Clemenza), he shoots both of them.

In filming the assassination scene, Al Pacino badly injured his leg while escaping from the restaurant after the hit.
8. "In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns."

Answer: Calo (Franco Citti)--one of Michael's Sicilian bodyguards

After Michael Corleone kills corrupt policeman Captain McCluskey and rival mob boss Sollozzo in a restaurant, he is sent by his family to live temporarily in Sicily until the political heat dies down. While there, he is smitten by local beauty Apollonia (Simonetta Stefanelli) and wants to arrange a date with her. One of his bodyguards, Calo (Franco Citti), warns Michael to be careful and gives him advice with this quote. Later, Fabrizio (the other bodyguard) plants a bomb in Michael's car that doesn't kill Michael but does kill Apollonia.
9. "Look how they massacred my boy!"

Answer: Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)

In the sequence of events leading up to this quote, Sonny's hot-headedness does him in. Sonny receives a call from his sister Connie (Talia Shire) telling him that her husband Carlo (Gianni Russo) has beat her up again. Instead of stepping back and smelling a setup, Sonny immediately rushes to Connie's house.

When he gets to the Jones Beach Causeway tollbooths, the car in front of Sonny's appears to be having a problem moving. Suddenly several hit men appear and spray Sonny's car with machine gun fire, hitting him with 147 bullets.

After his body has been brought to Bonasera's funeral parlor and Vito Corleone sees it, he says this quote. Later, Michael confronts Carlo and says, "You fingered Sonny for the Barzini people. Ahhh, that little farce you played with my sister -- you think that could fool a Corleone?" Carlo's execution is then ordered (that's the one where he kicks repeatedly against a car windshield as he is being strangled).
10. "When -- when did I ever refuse an accommodation?"

Answer: Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)

After Sonny is assassinated and the Godfather sees his bullet-ridden body in Bonasera's mortuary, he is physically shaken and says to Tom Hagen, "I want no acts of vengeance. I want you to arrange a meeting with the heads of the Five Families. This war stops now." At that meeting rival mob boss Barzini says, "We're all grateful to Don Corleone for calling this meeting. We all know him as a man of his word -- a modest man -- he'll always listen to reason." Tattaglia (another mob boss) says, "Yes, Don Barzini -- he's too modest.

He had all the judges and politicians in his pocket. He refused to share them." Vito Corleone then says this quote. Other actors considered for the role of Vito Corleone included Orson Welles and George C. Scott. In the 1973 Academy Awards, "The Godfather" won three Oscars, including Best Picture.
