"Heidi" (1937) Trivia Quiz

"Heidi", starring Shirley Temple, is one of the world's beloved stories. This was NOT the infamous version that interrupted the Raider-Jet football game in 1968, so sports fans, no need to boycott! Good luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early on in the movie, we see Heidi's aunt Dete bringing Heidi to the town near where Heidi's uncle lives. Heidi meets a small boy who is in the midst of doing his job. Heidi gives him a nickname based on the animal he is working with. What does Heidi call this boy throughout the movie?

Answer: Goat Peter

Goat Peter is a friendly goatherd, however the same can't be said of his goats. One butts Heidi in the behind as she is bending over to fetch something.
2. Dete quickly drops her off at the mountain home and flees, not wanting to deal with the burden of Heidi anymore. What is the uncle's name?

Answer: Adolph Kramer

Adolph, who resembles a gruff Santa Claus, is reluctant to open up to the little girl, but it is nearly impossible to resist the cuteness of a character played by Shirley Temple.
3. Heidi has some difficulties, in her first evening on the mountain, doing one of her daily activities. This prompts the Grandfather to make something for her that night while she slept. What was the item that was created?

Answer: A high chair to sit easier at the table

"It's the best chair I've ever seen", gushes Heidi when she sees it in the morning. We see that the grandfather is very self-sufficient up on the mountain, from his handiwork in making the chair.
4. On the mountain, we see Heidi participate in the chores around the cabin. We see her help with three of these choices, which one is NOT one of them?

Answer: Fence Painting

Heidi has her own parcel to carry the wood behind her grandfather; she gets tuckered out, but she does help. And she finds that goat milk is warm when first coming out of the goat. She learns the process of cheese making from her grandfather in her first days there, which is made from the milk of the goats.
5. Heidi and the grandfather read from a storybook together, which sends Heidi into a daydream about the book. What is the name of the book that prompts the dreamy portrayal, allowing Heidi to play the main character of the story?

Answer: The Magic Wooden Shoes

Shirley Temple actually was very integral in the creating of this dream sequence, even going as far as to provide input as to how the scene should look and be choreographed. This was her only chance to sing and dance in the movie, and she did so all in wooden shoes.
6. In this 1937 version, where is it that Heidi goes to school?

Answer: She is home schooled.

All of the schools mentioned actually do exist in the Frankfurt, but her uncle chooses to keep her up on the mountain and home school her there. This comes with protests from the pastor, who comes up the mountain to try to persuade the uncle otherwise.
7. Heidi's aunt Dete swipes Heidi away from the mountain to bring her to a wealthy man, Herr Sessaman, from Frankfurt. The man already has a daughter whose name is Klara. She has a condition that hinders her when Heidi arrives. What is her difficulty?

Answer: She is an invalid.

Due to a fall, Klara is confined to a wheel chair. Heidi becomes Klara's friend, and even encourages her to try and walk again, much to the housekeeper's chagrin. The housekeeper feels her job would dry up and she wouldn't be able to keep close to Herr Sessaman, whom she has a secret love for. She feels that as long as the daughter cannot walk, she will be needed.
8. For a short time, there is an animal loose in the Sessaman home, after it enters in from an open window. What type of animal is this?

Answer: Monkey

The monkey is the companion of a German organ grinder. Heidi is feeding it from the window, and it enters after Heidi is distracted. Hijinks ensue after the butler and other help in the home try unsuccessfully to retrieve it. It is only after the organ grinder goes door to door that the monkey goes back to its owner.
9. There is a gift to Heidi by Herr Sessaman for Christmas, one he purchased during some traveling. What is the gift?

Answer: A snowglobe

The favor is returned when Heidi and Klara arrange that Klara would show Sessaman she is beginning to walk again. The housekeeper becomes jealous and attacks Heidi in a separate room and destroys her snowglobe. Herr Sessaman witnesses it and fires the housekeeper on the spot.
10. After unsuccessfully trying to sell Heidi to the gypsies, the mountain uncle is able to retrieve Heidi and bring her back to the mountain home. About a year later, the Sessaman family and friends came to visit at the end of the movie, and some interesting news has transpired. Which of these events happens during the time that has passed?

Answer: The pastor has gotten married.

No one would ever touch the trademark curls on Shirley Temple! The pastor had a female companion earlier in the movie and Heidi had, in passing, suggested that they made an excellent pair. Their glance after the comment showed they may have had some feelings for each other that weren't brought to the forefront until Heidi mentioned it. Apparently the comment worked, they have tied the knot.
