Hint

Question 14 of 15

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2001) This monster was once a great wizard, but his attempt to destroy a baby rebounded on him, leaving him weak and dependent on the blood of unicorns to stay alive. In fact he's so badly off that he has to live inside the head of one of his servants, concealed by the turban that the servant always wears.

Answer: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

On the stroke of midnight, on his eleventh birthday, Harry's world is turned upside down. It is then that he learns that he's a wizard, and that his parents had been killed by the most powerful, evil wizard of all time. Unfortunately that very same wizard is not only still alive, but is trying to reclaim his power, and revenge himself on the young boy who was the unknowing cause of his downfall.
2. (1975) This monster is huge, and is terrorizing the waters off of Amity Island. Oh yes, he's also named Bruce, after Steven Spielberg's lawyer. Many people were afraid to go swimming for a long time after seeing this film.

Answer: Jaws

Chief Martin Brody has his work cut out for him, he has to keep his citizens safe from shark attacks, convince the mayor that he really needs to close the beaches, and catch himself the biggest shark that anyone has ever seen.
3. (1992) This ancient evil has terrorized his homeland of Transylvania for centuries. But the Count seeks to branch out and hunt in England, especially now that he's seen a picture of the beautiful Mina.

Answer: Dracula

Sent by his firm to help Count Dracula complete a real estate deal, Jonathon Harker takes a picture of his fiancee, Mina, with him. Mina's likeness to the Count's dead wife captures his heart, and Jonathon is left behind to fend for himself as Dracula takes his hunger and lust to England. Coppola's offering closely follows Bram Stoker's much loved story.
4. (1973) This monster is a demon in the truest sense of the word, and he's taken possession of a 12 year-old-girl who made the mistake of playing with a Ouija Board. Once he's settled in, he marks his territory by puking green soup at the visiting priest.

Answer: The Exorcist

When a single mother, and her daughter, move to a new apartment in Georgetown, Washington, the little girl begins acting strangely. A myriad of tests later, doctors have no idea of what is wrong with her, but her behaviour just keeps getting stranger and stranger. When the local priest comes for a visit, he realizes that it's time for an exorcism. Then the fun really starts.
5. (1996) The monsters in this movie are two young southern boys, who brutally rape and beat a 10 year old girl for the crime of walking down the road when they drive past. Of course they believe that they're perfectly within their rights, just because they're white and she's not.

Answer: A Time to Kill

Knowing that there's a very real chance that his daughter's attackers will be set free, the girl's father takes the law into his own hands and kills the monsters who almost killed his daughter. The trial to determine his fate ruffles more than a few feathers, including those belonging to the Ku Klux Klan.
6. (2001) He's big, he's green, and he makes candles out of his ear wax. All he wants to do is be left alone, but first he has to rescue the princess so he can get rid of that pesky donkey, and all the other Fairy Tale creatures that have invaded his swamp.

Answer: Shrek

The diminutive Lord Farquaad wants to marry a princess, but he's too lazy to rescue one himself. So he cuts a deal with Shrek, agreeing to remove all the Fairy Tale creatures that moved into Shrek's swamp (after Farquaad kicked them out) if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona from the dragon. Of course the movie has to have a Fairy Tale ending!
7. (1987) These monsters are young, and tough, and only come out to play at night. And oh yes, did I forget to mention that they like to drink blood too?

Answer: The Lost Boys

After Sam moves to a small town on the California Coast with his mother and brother, he notices that very strange things are happening in the town. Then to make matters worse, his own brother falls for a really beautiful girl who is part of the weird crowd, and he starts to behave strangely too. Before long Sam is convinced that he's dealing with a band of vampires, and he has to take drastic measures to save his brother.
8. (1968 and 1990) The monsters from these two movies (the second a fairly consistent remake of the first)were once dead, until something (presumably radiation) turned them into something even their mothers couldn't love. Which made life a tad difficult for those poor folk trapped in that old farm house.

Answer: Night of the Living Dead

This horror classic tells the tale of how radiation from a fallen satellite turns perfectly respectable corpses into zombies with a burning need to feed on human flesh. They can only be killed by a blow to the head. I have to confess to not having watched this movie all the way through.
9. (1996) The monsters in this campy Tim Burton film come from Outer Space. And they come armed with incredibly powerful weapons, and the cruelest senses of humour that you ever want to encounter. If you want to see an all star cast disintegrated one by one, then this is the film for you.

Answer: Mars Attacks!

When the Martians arrive, people are torn between welcoming them in peace, or responding in aggression. Sadly, the message of the movie seems to be that the aggressive response would have been best, as the Martians are soon using their lasers to turn everyone into green or red skeletons (it was planned that way because it was originally intended to be a Christmas release).

There are some funny moments, and some good campy performances by an all star cast, but the movie is just a little too silly for my taste.
10. (1983) Miriam is an ancient Egyptian vampire. To be chosen as her lover means that she will feed off of your life force, and in return you're given the gift of eternal youth. Eternal until she gets tired of you that is, and then you will age hundreds of years in a very short time.

Answer: The Hunger

Miriam and her lover, played by Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, live a very fashionable life, playing and feeding in New York. When Deneuve tires of Bowie, he seeks medical help from a bewildered Susan Sarandon, who watches him age right before her eyes.

Intrigued by what she's seen and heard, she decides she wants to meet Miriam, but ends up being drawn into the game as Miriam's next lover.
11. (1998) This monster is a gigantic, mutant Iguana lizard, who manages to make it as far as New York City, and chooses Madison Square Garden as the place to set up housekeeping and experience parenthood.

Answer: Godzilla

No one knows exactly how this mutant lizard came to be, but they're pretty certain that it had something to do with the atomic bomb test that the French conducted in the South Pacific. The fact that it made its way to New York is silly, but inevitable.
12. (1994) This monster is a publisher who is developing incredibly heightened senses, and an energy levely that would put a much younger man to shame. Oh, did I mention that he's also developing a taste for blood, and learning to howl at the moon a little? In fact it won't be too long before he more closely resembles the creature that bit him than a human being.

Answer: Wolf

Will Randall, played by Jack Nicholson, is not having a good time of it lately. He's running out of steam, his wife has left him, and he's in danger of losing his job. Then one night he stops to avoid running over a wolf that is lying in the middle of the road.

When he gets out to see if the wolf is injured, it bites him and runs away. It's amazing how a little werewolf bite can turn your life right around.
13. (1995) The monsters in this movie are so tiny that they can't be seen with the naked eye. But that doesn't make them any less deadly. The virus is carried into the country by a monkey, and it's killing people at an alarming rate. Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo have to find a way to stop the virus, before the Whitehouse overreacts.

Answer: Outbreak

To make matters more interesting, the monkey who brought the disease in is loose, and has to be caught before it infects any one else.
Wolfgang Petersen directed this very frightening movie that also starred Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Cuba Gooding Junior.
14. (1997) The monster in this movie is an intergalactic terrorist, and a Bug. He's arrived on Earth to assassinate 2 ambassadors from another galaxy and lay claim to a weapon that's more powerful than any we've ever known. Of course to do this he has to 'borrow' the skin of a human, so that he doesn't look too obvious wandering around.

Answer: Men In Black

Agent K, played by Tommy Lee Jones, and Agent J, played by Will Smith, are part of an organization which tracks and monitors the behaviour of extra-terrestials on Earth. When the very large, and very aggressive Bug arrives, his efforts to disguise himself by wearing Edgar do not fool the canny K.

The Bug's thirst for sugar water gives him away. Can K and J stop him in time to prevent inter-galactic war?
15. (1977) This monster is a very powerful force in the universe, who has been convinced to turn to the dark side, and use his powers for evil. His son will eventually convince him to abandon the dark side, but in this movie, where we first meet him, he is still very much evil. Remember, I'm looking for the name of the movie, not the character.

Answer: Star Wars

'Star Wars' was the first movie made in the series, if not the first in the story line. In this movie young Luke Skywalker joins forces with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia and Han Solo to fight back against the oppression of the Emperor. So far he is blissfully unaware of how his fate is inextricably linked with that of the imposing Lord Vader. Who would have believed, all those years ago when this amazing movie first hit the big screen, that Darth Vader would become the driving character that held the series together?
