Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most famous prequels of all time are probably the second 'Star Wars' trilogy. 'Episodes 4-6' were released between 1977 and 1983 while 'episodes 1-3' were released between 1999 and 2005. Not many characters appeared in both trilogies, but one of the most important characters that did is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Can you tell me which two actors portrayed him in the original and prequel trilogies respectively?

Answer: Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor

The original Obi-Wan Kenobi, also known as Ben Kenobi during his time in exile, was played by Alec Guinness, also famous for his roles in the Oscar winning 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (with William Holden) and 'Lawrence of Arabia' (alongside Peter O'Toole). Obi-Wan actually dies in the original film ('Star Wars Episode IV'), but returns in the later films as a Jedi ghost.

The performance of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy was from Ewan McGregor, also well known for his roles in blockbusters such as 'Trainspotting', 'Angels and Demons' and 'Moulin Rouge', where he performed his own vocals alongside Nicole Kidman.
2. The 2011 release 'X-men: First Class' is a prequel to the original trilogy released between 2000 and 2006. Can you tell me which actor, also known for his appearances in '300' and 'Inglourious Basterds', plays the young Magneto in 'First Class'?

Answer: Michael Fassbender

'X-Men: First Class' tells the story of how Magneto and Professor X used to be friends long before they were enemies, working together and with other mutants before splitting to form the 'Brotherhood' and the 'X-Men' respectively. The young Magneto is played by Michael Fassbender, while the young Professor X is played by James McAvoy, best known for 'The Last King of Scotland' and 'Atonement'. This was the first time the two of them had appeared together since the TV series 'Band of Brothers' in 2001.

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart act as Magneto and Professor X respectively in the original trilogy of films.
3. The 2012 film 'Prometheus' is a prequel to the 1979 sci-fi classic 'Alien'. Both films share the same director, also known for 'Blade Runner' and 'Gladiator'. Who is this famous director?

Answer: Ridley Scott

Strangely, despite there having been three 'Alien' films between the original and 'Prometheus' in 2012, all three were directed by different directors. The sequel 'Aliens' was directed by the tremendously successful James Cameron. 'Alien 3' was directed by David Fincher, director of many acclaimed films including 'Fight Club' and 'The Social Network'. Finally 'Alien: Resurrection' was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also directed the heartwarming French film 'Amelie' in 2001. Sigourney Weaver starred in all four films.

Robert Zemeckis is best known for 'Back to the Future' and 'Forrest Gump', Steven Soderbergh for 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Ocean's Eleven' and Steven Spielberg, arguably the most famous director of all time, has directed many famous films including 'Jurassic Park' and 'Schindler's List'.
4. The 1979 film 'Zulu Dawn' is a prequel to the 1964 release 'Zulu'. 'Zulu Dawn' depicts the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879, but which battle is the subject of 'Zulu', occurring later that same day?

Answer: Rorke's Drift

Both 'Zulu' and 'Zulu Dawn' were written by Cy Endfield, with the original starring Stanley Baker, who also helped produce the film, and Michael Caine in his first ever role as leading man, while the prequel starred Burt Lancaster and Peter O'Toole, who is best known for his portrayal of T.E. Lawrence in the 1962 film 'Lawrence of Arabia'.

The British army actually lost at the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22nd 1879. Later that day, and continuing until January 23rd, just over 150 British troops successfully defended the mission station Rorke's Drift, despite assault by around 3,000 Zulus.

The Battle of Inyezane was part of the siege of Eshowe, the oldest town in Zululand. During an advance by the British, they were ambushed by Zulus, but forced to retreat due to the use of a Gatling gun amongst other weapons.
5. The chilling 'Silence of the Lambs' is one of the most decorated films of all time. Although not as successful, the 2001 prequel 'Red Dragon' is just as creepy and features the same actor as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Who is this legendary Welshman?

Answer: Anthony Hopkins

'Silence of the Lambs' was one of the first three films to have won the 'Big 5' at the Oscars. This consists of winning the awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay (either adapted or original). The other films to have achieved this feat were 'It Happened One Night' in 1934 and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' in 1975.

In the case of 'Silence of the Lambs' the winners were Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Jonathan Demme and Ted Tally in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay respectively.

A further four films have won four of the awards, these are 'Gone With the Wind', 'Mrs Miniver', 'American Beauty' and 'Annie Hall', all of which missed out on Best Actor with the exception of 'American Beauty' which missed out on Best Actress.
6. Although not technically a prequel to the 1968 original, the 2011 film 'Rise of Planet of the Apes' tells the story of how the apes increased in intelligence and so I've decided to include it in this quiz. What was the name of the super-intelligent chimpanzee who led the rebellion?

Answer: Caesar

Caesar the chimpanzee was played by Andy Serkis, who's most famous for his performance as Gollum in the 'Lord of the Rings' series, as well as being the voice of Kong in the 2005 version of 'King Kong'.

'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' also stars James Franco, renowned for his performances as Harry Osborn in the 'Spider-man' series of films and as Aron Ralston in the true story '127 hours'.
7. 'Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd', starring Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen was the 2003 prequel to the 1994 comedy 'Dumb and Dumber', starring Jim Carrey and which other actor, also known for his performances in 'Speed' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck'?

Answer: Jeff Daniels

Unfortunately the prequel did not match up to the success of the original film, taking around $40 million at the box office as opposed to the $247 million grossed by 'Dumb and Dumber'. As well as appearing in films Jeff Daniels is also a stage actor, appearing in productions both on and off Broadway, including the play 'God of Carnage' for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the Tony Awards in 2009. He is also the founder of Purple Rose Theatre Company, named for 'The Purple Rose of Cairo', a Woody Allen film in which he appeared.

Jeff Bridges is most famous for appearing in 'TRON' and the 1998 Coen Brothers film 'The Big Lebowski'. Jeff Goldblum is known for 'The Fly', 'Jurassic Park' and 'Independence Day'. Finally Jeff Conaway is best remembered for his TV appearances in 'Taxi' and 'Babylon 5', as well as the film 'Grease' in 1978.
8. 'Captain America: The First Avenger' is the fifth film in the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe' series, and acts as a prequel to the first installment 'Iron Man' from 2008. Which actor, also seen playing the Human Torch in the superhero movie 'Fantastic Four', appeared as Captain America?

Answer: Chris Evans

Robert Downey Jr plays the lead in 'Iron Man', as does Chris Hemsworth in 'Thor', and Mark Ruffalo takes over from Edward Norton who was the Hulk in the 2008 film 'The Incredible Hulk'.

All of these actors appeared in the 2012 film 'Marvel's The Avengers', or 'Marvel Avengers Assemble' if you live in the UK or Ireland. The story is about many superheroes coming together in order to fight the evil Loki, adoptive brother of Thor. The film grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office, making it one of the most successful movies ever made.
9. The 2011 film 'Puss in Boots' is a prequel to the 'Shrek' series of films. Which Spanish actor plays the eponymous lead?

Answer: Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas is one of Spain's most famous exports, and is arguably one of the best actors the country has ever produced. In addition to playing the role of Puss in Boots he had also had roles in 'Spy Kids', 'Desperado' and 'Interview with the Vampire', as well as the 1998 version of 'The Mask of Zorro'.
10. 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was the first film released in the 'Indiana Jones' film franchise, but which is chronologically first?

Answer: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Despite the fact that 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was the first Indiana Jones film created (in 1981), the 1984 release 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom', set in 1935, the year before 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', appears first chronologically. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (released in 1989 was a sequel to 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and so appears third in release order and third chronologically. 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull', released in 2008 is a further sequel, appearing fourth chronologically.
