How to Write a Horror Movie Trivia Quiz

I was recently watching a horror movie and noticed that it and many movies like it had some striking similarities. I then began my attempt to write the most stereotypical movie script to ever exist so I can sell it to Hollywood. Caution: Spoilers.

Question 1 of 10
1. Right off the bat, it was obvious to me that every great horror movie needs a "gratuitous" opening kill, if only to prevent moviegoers from changing their minds and seeing the new Tyler Perry movie three theaters over. Seeking to mimic this trend, I knew I had to incorporate a death in the opening scene of my new movie script.

Which famous flick also follows this trend, with the first kill in the opening scene?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. If you want to make a great horror movie, sometimes it's a good idea to "borrow" the plot of an already existing story. Stephen King's books are a gold mine for this.

Which of these movies is based on a Stephen King book?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Irony is used by some directors to provide a twist in their plot, or to provide the audience with a sense of foreboding in some movies.

Which of these movies mentions specific "rules" on how to survive a horror movie, and victims that are still killed despite these rules being mentioned?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. It isn't necessary to have a human killer; indeed, many successful movies have some element of the supernatural.

Which of these films does not involve non-human antagonists?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Sometimes, if you want to terrify the audience a phone call works best. If someone receives a phone call from the killer, they are unnerved (to say the least), and then they realize that the killer is -GASP- nearby!

Which of these movies features a phone call from the killer to a victim?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. If there is a killer in the movie, the killer needs a signature, something unique that only our killer has, for example a weapon or a costume.

Which killer's signature is a bloody nose?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Horror movie directors seem to like adding a cause for their killer. Revenge seems to be a classic, but there are different revenge sub-genres.

In which of these film series is the killer's first victim the man who caused his wife's miscarriage?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. In many of the most famous horror franchises, the killer has absolutely nothing to do with the victims other than the fact they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In which of these movies does the killer personally know at least some of their victims at the start of the movie?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. A good way to leave the audience thinking at the end of the movie is to give them a twist ending, something that occurs at the end of the movie that is completely unexpected.

Which of these movies features the main character being dead without knowing it for the majority of the film?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Since this is Hollywood we're talking about, sequels have to be in consideration. A good way to do this is by having the killer live through the whole movie.

Which of these movie franchises has at least one sequel with the same killer as the original movie?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Jurassic Park

In the book "Jurassic Park" an extremely mutilated victim is taken to a local hospital, and he keeps saying "Raptor". In the movie, the actual attack is shown, and while it isn't explicitly stated that it was a Velociraptor, the viewer can safely assume that it was.
2. If you want to make a great horror movie, sometimes it's a good idea to "borrow" the plot of an already existing story. Stephen King's books are a gold mine for this. Which of these movies is based on a Stephen King book?

Answer: Misery

In the movie "Misery", author Paul Sheldon crashes his car and is later saved (and then held captive) by obsessed fan Annie Wilkes. Unfortunately for him, Wilkes is crazy, and he is subjected to numerous tortures, including having his ankles smashed with a sledgehammer. Other movies based on Stephen King books include "The Langoliers", "The Shining", and "Carrie".

I didn't make any money off of this because I decide to make up my own plot line, so my story is original (which is more than can be said for many Hollywood writers).
3. Irony is used by some directors to provide a twist in their plot, or to provide the audience with a sense of foreboding in some movies. Which of these movies mentions specific "rules" on how to survive a horror movie, and victims that are still killed despite these rules being mentioned?

Answer: Scream

In each "Scream" movie there are "rules" mentioned that are about how to survive a horror movie; these rules are either ignored or futile, because the killers are able to get to them anyway. Of course, the rules don't help much if the killers are part of the group who state them.

I decide to neglect adding irony to my script, mainly because I couldn't think of anything that would hit home with the audience.
4. It isn't necessary to have a human killer; indeed, many successful movies have some element of the supernatural. Which of these films does not involve non-human antagonists?

Answer: The Hills Have Eyes

"Paranormal Activity" and "The Fog" are both ghost stories in one way or another, while "Christine" was a pioneer in the ever-popular "haunted car" genre. "The Hills Have Eyes" featured psychotic cannibal killers. While it is still scary, the killers are 100% human.

That said, I decide I want a human killer, someone who the audience knows but the characters do not, to heighten potential suspense.
5. Sometimes, if you want to terrify the audience a phone call works best. If someone receives a phone call from the killer, they are unnerved (to say the least), and then they realize that the killer is -GASP- nearby! Which of these movies features a phone call from the killer to a victim?

Answer: Black Christmas

Other movies where the killer makes a phone call to a victim include "Scream" (which I've already used for an answer) and "When a Stranger Calls" (I'm not giving you the answer on a silver platter). In "Black Christmas" the killer stalks and kills members of a sorority house, and calls the members from inside the house.

My script, in an attempt to keep up with the times, includes text messages from the killer. For example, "U R Ded." Terrifying!
6. If there is a killer in the movie, the killer needs a signature, something unique that only our killer has, for example a weapon or a costume. Which killer's signature is a bloody nose?

Answer: Jeremy Melton

Voorhees, Kramer, and Wilkes are the killers from "Friday the 13th", "Saw", and "Misery", respectively. Melton (a.k.a. Adam Carr) is the killer from the movie "Valentine". Melton was beaten up by some fellow students at school one day, and developed a nosebleed because of this.

I decide to make my killer wear two differently colored socks during the crimes, because the idea is so ridiculous it has to be original.
7. Horror movie directors seem to like adding a cause for their killer. Revenge seems to be a classic, but there are different revenge sub-genres. In which of these film series is the killer's first victim the man who caused his wife's miscarriage?

Answer: Saw

It is revealed in "Saw IV" that the first trap John Kramer set up was intended for the inadvertent killer, Cecil. It was after that kill that Kramer became trap-happy and started using his traps on (and killing) many other people. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" both have roots in revenge, however.

I figure that my killer's revenge will be against the people who kicked his puppy when he was five years old.
8. In many of the most famous horror franchises, the killer has absolutely nothing to do with the victims other than the fact they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. In which of these movies does the killer personally know at least some of their victims at the start of the movie?

Answer: Carrie

Birds and sharks can't know the people they kill. Carrie White is a student who ends up using her power of telekinesis to kill other students and teachers at her prom.

I decide to make my killer the main character's under-appreciated brother, and thus to have him personally familiar with his victims.
9. A good way to leave the audience thinking at the end of the movie is to give them a twist ending, something that occurs at the end of the movie that is completely unexpected. Which of these movies features the main character being dead without knowing it for the majority of the film?

Answer: The Sixth Sense

In "The Sixth Sense", Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a psychologist, is shot by Vincent, a former patient of his. Later on in the film, Crowe encounters a child named Cole, and Cole says that he can see dead people, and claims that the people he sees "walk around like regular people". It takes Crowe until the end of the film to realize that Vincent killed him at the start of the movie, and he became one of the dead people Cole saw.

I decide my horror movie will not end with any spectacular twist because all of the good ideas have already been taken.
10. Since this is Hollywood we're talking about, sequels have to be in consideration. A good way to do this is by having the killer live through the whole movie. Which of these movie franchises has at least one sequel with the same killer as the original movie?

Answer: Child's Play

The "Child's Play" movies like to feature the killer doll Chucky, otherwise known as Charles Lee Ray. The first "Friday the 13th" movie features Jason's mother, Pamela. "Se7en" isn't a movie franchise, but rather just one movie. Different movies in the "Scary Movie" series have different themes and different killers.

I decide that my killer should be stopped without any sequels necessary, but Hollywood will be able to change that if the first movie is a success.
