Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2004 film, starring Charlize Theron as Gilda, Penelope Cruz as Mia and Stuart Townsend as Guy, is set during the Spanish Civil War?

Answer: Head in the Clouds

'Head in the Clouds' stars Charlize Theron as Gilda Besse, a half-American, half-French woman who is told she will die at the age of thirty-four. Stuart Townsend plays the idealistic young student Guy Malyon, who goes to Spain to fight against Franco's forces with the army of the Second Spanish Republic, while Gilda's lover Mia (Penelope Cruz) volunteers as a nurse. She is eventually killed by a landmine.

The photograph is of the Valle de los Caidos, a monument in San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain. It was conceived by Franco to honour those who died in the war.
2. In which African country, where the mass slaughter of Tutsi people by the Hutu government occurred in 1994, is 'Shooting Dogs' set?

Answer: Rwanda

'Shooting Dogs' (2005) is based on the experiences of David Belton, a BBC producer who worked in Rwanda during the Rwandan Genocide. He is also one of the film's co-producers, and several survivors of the genocide were also on the production staff. The film gets its title from UN soldiers shooting stray dogs who were scavenging the bodies of the dead. John Hurt plays Father Christopher, a priest based on the real-life Vjekoslav Curic, who worked with both Hutu and Tutsi people, while Hugh Dancy plays a teacher, Joe Connor.

The photograph is of a memorial site to the genocide at Rusatira.
3. 'Cold Mountain', based on the book by Charles Frazier, is set during the American Civil War and stars Jude Law as a Confederate Army deserter. Which real-life musician plays the character Georgia?

Answer: Jack White

'Cold Mountain' follows the adventures of WP Inman (Jude Law), who deserts the Confederates when he receives a letter from his lover Ada (Nicole Kidman). While Inman is fighting in the war, Ada looks after her family's farm. Jack White plays Georgia, a mandolin player and friend of another deserter, Stobrod Thewes, and gets to sing a couple of songs. He later dated his co-star Renee Zellweger, who plays Stobrod's daughter Ruby.

The photograph is of Cold Mountain itself - yes, it's a real mountain! It is in North Carolina.
4. Which Middle Eastern conflict provides the setting for 'Jarhead', 'Three Kings' and 'The Finest Hour'?

Answer: The Persian Gulf War

'Three Kings' stars Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and George Clooney as a group of US soldiers plotting a gold heist during the 1991 uprisings in Iraq. 'Jarhead' is based on the book by Anthony Swofford (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) about his experiences as a Marine in the Gulf War, and also features Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard. Finally, 'The Finest Hour' is about a pair of Navy SEALS, played by Rob Lowe and Gale Hansen, who fall in love with the same woman, and are later stationed in Iraq.

The photograph is of abandoned Iraqi vehicles during the Gulf War.
5. Sometimes, war can be used for comedic purposes too! Which satirical Cold War film, with the subtitle of 'How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb', features a fictional nuclear attack on the Soviet Union by the US?

Answer: Dr. Strangelove

Made in 1964 and directed by Stanley Kubrick, 'Dr. Strangelove' tells the story of an attack on the Soviet Union, ordered by the extremely paranoid General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), and the attempts to stop it. Peter Sellers plays the titular character, a mad scientist, as well as US President Merkin Muffley and RAF Group Captain Lionel Mandrake. The film's most iconic scene features Major 'King' Kong (Slim Pickens) riding on a nuclear bomb as it plummets to the ground.

The photograph is of the most common symbol associated with nuclear bombs - that of the mushroom cloud.
6. The 1964 film 'Zulu' is set in the Anglo-Zulu War, at the Battle of Rorke's Drift. It was the first major role for Michael Caine, who would later star in 'Get Carter' and 'The Italian Job'. Which real-life British soldier did he play?

Answer: Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead

Narrated by Richard Burton, 'Zulu' tells the story of the Battle of Rorke's Drift, a battle between 150 British soldiers defending the Rorke's Drift mission station, and a Zulu army of around 3000-4000 warriors. Despite the British being heavily outnumbered and the heavy number of casualties, they managed to hold off the impending army. Lieutenant Bromhead was awarded the Victoria Cross, along with ten other British soldiers. Corporal Allen, Lieutenant Chard and Private Hook were played by Glynn Edwards, Stanley Baker and James Booth respectively.

The photograph is of the site where Rorke's Drift once stood.
7. Which 2011 film, based on a book by Michael Morpurgo, is set during the First World War, and tells the story of an animal called Joey who is sold to the British Army?

Answer: War Horse

Joey, the 'War Horse' in question, is a chestnut bay horse who is trained at a young age by his owner, Albert (Jeremy Irvine). Joey is sold to the British Army to raise money for the family who owned him. He and a black horse named Topthorn are captured by the Germans. Albert enlists in the army in the meantime, and is reunited with Joey on the battlefield when Joey recognises his voice.

The field poppy, as shown in the photograph, became the symbol of Remembrance Day in the UK because poppies grew on the battlefields after the end of the First World War.
8. Who directed the 2006 film 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley', which is set during the Irish Civil War and the Irish War of Independence?

Answer: Ken Loach

Starring Cillian Murphy, Padraic Delaney and Liam Cunningham, 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley' tells the story of two brothers, Damian (Murphy) and Teddy O'Donovan (Delaney), who join the IRA in 1920, and are later arrested and detained by the British. They are divided by the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the ensuing civil war, with Teddy joining the National Army and Damien joining the Anti-Treaty IRA. The film was awarded the Palme d'Or in 2006, but was criticised by some commentators for making the IRA seem too heroic.

The photograph is of an Irish War of Independence memorial statue in Dublin.
9. Even Disney have made films about war! Which animated Disney film is set during the Han-Xiongnu conflict, and is based on a Chinese ballad about a female warrior?

Answer: Mulan

Based on the poem 'The Ballad of Fa Mulan', 'Mulan' is about a young Han Chinese girl (played by Ming-Na Wen) who fights in the Han army in the war against the Xiongnu (or, as the song 'I'll Make A Man Out of You' calls them, the Huns). The Emperor of China issues a conscription order for men to join the army, but as Mulan's father is ill, she enlists in his place, disguised as a man. Mulan is expelled from the army after her secret is discovered, but she perseveres and eventually fights Shan Yu, the leader of the Huns.

The photograph is of a dragon sculpture in the Forbidden City in Beijing. I also picked it as a shout-out to Mushu, the little red dragon who acts as Mulan's protector.
10. "Smell that? You smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning." This famous line comes from the Vietnam war film 'Apocalypse Now', directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and is spoken by Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore - but who plays him?

Answer: Robert Duvall

'Apocalypse Now' is based on Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness', and the setting is changed from Congo to Vietnam. Lieutenant Kilgore is a surfing enthusiast and member of the First Cavalry, and says this line after ordering a napalm attack. Marlon Brando plays the insane Colonel Kurtz, a former officer with his own unit of Degar troops; Martin Sheen plays Captain Benjamin Willard, who is ordered by higher-ups to assassinate Kurtz; and Laurence plays Tyrone 'Mr Clean' Miller, a teenage crew member. The film won two Oscars in 1980, and the 1979 Palme d'Or.
