Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From what book in the Bible do we hear the movie's title?

Answer: Proverbs

This phrase is brought up at the prayer meeting. It comes from Proverbs 11:29, "He that troubleth his own house will inherit the wind and the fool shall be servant to the wise at heart." (King James Version) In the movie, it is recited by Brady to Jeremiah Brown.
2. What is the name of Bertram Cates' girlfriend?

Answer: Rachel

Rachel, whose father is the respected Reverend Brown, remains loyal to Bert even though she disagrees with what he taught. She is very confused about the entire trial.
3. Which newspaper sends a journalist to Hillsboro, and a lawyer for the defense?

Answer: Baltimore Herald

E.K. Hornbeck is the journalist who covers the trial for the Herald, and Henry Drummond is the lawyer for the defense. The paper does this for Cates because while he is looked upon as a criminal in Hillsboro, people elsewhere consider him to be a hero.
4. What famous figure agrees to prosecute the trial?

Answer: Matthew Harrison Brady

Matthew Harrison Brady is famous because he ran for President three times. Everyone in Hillsboro loves him. Brady was based on William Jennings Bryan.
5. Who wrote the play on which the movie was based?

Answer: Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee

All of these are famous American playwrights, but the team of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee wrote the play version of "Inherit the Wind." This is listed in the opening credits. Together, the pair also wrote "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail" and "Auntie Mame".
6. What song is sung by the people of Hillsboro repeatedly throughout the movie?

Answer: Old Time Religion

They sing this repeatedly throughout the movie. They also rewrite the words to include a verse about their hero: "It is good enough for Brady, it is good enough for Brady, it is good enough for Brady and it's good enough for me." This song is also called "Give me that Old Time Religion." The people of Hillsboro are dogmatic about their beliefs, so sing this often.
7. Who is named by the mayor to be the "spiritual leader" of the community?

Answer: Jeremiah Brown

The Reverend Jeremiah Brown is a fundamentalist, condemns his own daughter at a prayer meeting for being in love with Cates, and constantly refers to Bertram Cates as a "sinner." He is, all in all, not a very pleasant man.
8. What is Bertram Cates arrested for teaching in a public school?

Answer: Evolution

The entire trial is based around the fundamentalist Christians attacking the rational-thinking Darwinians. Cates teaches this because he wants his students to understand where they came from, even though he knows it is against the state law.
9. Which character dies during the movie?

Answer: Matthew Harrison Brady

He dies of a "busted belly" shortly after the close of the trial. Hornbeck condemns Drummond for mourning the loss of Brady, but Drummond defends Brady, saying, "A giant once lived in that man."
10. Bertram Cates is found guilty.

Answer: True

He is fined $100 for his violation, but Drummond tells the court that his client would not pay the fine if it were one single dollar. They appeal the jury's decision to the State court.
