Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Paper Moon" stars what real-life father-daughter duo?

Answer: Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal

The O'Neals would team up with director Peter Bogdanovich again in 1976 for "Nickelodeon", about the movie making business of the 1910s. Unlike "Paper Moon", "Nickelodeon" was a commercial and critical failure. As for father and daughter, their troubled real-life relationship was the focus of the 2011 reality show "Ryan and Tatum: The O'Neals".
2. "Paper Moon" tells the story of con man Moses Pray, who agrees to transport orphaned Addie Loggins to her relatives in St. Joseph, Missouri. As the film opens, Moses (generally just called Moze) is scamming widows by telling them that their husbands purchased a special item for them before dying. What is the item?

Answer: A bible

The story of Moses and Addie is based on a 1971 novel called "Addie Pray", by Joe David Brown. The bible scam is central to the first half of the film, and is the key element by which Moses and Addie get to know each other and develop a bond.
3. Moze originally intends to just stick Addie on a train with a note for her relatives, but is forced to keep her with him because she overhears one of his scams. What does Addie know about Moze that she uses against him?

Answer: She hears him con a local businessman out of $200, and she wants the money.

There are multiple times during the film when Moze has more than enough money to pay Addie the $200, but he keeps her with him because he realizes that a cute child can be good for business. Though it's unspoken, we also conclude that they are becoming increasingly attached to one another.
4. Several times during the film, it is suggested that Moze might be Addie's actual father. What facial feature do they share that suggests this?

Answer: The same jaw

The issue of whether Moze is Addie's father is never conclusively settled. The source novel does not settle the matter, either. However, it is made very clear that it's at least possible, since Moze and Addie's mother definitely had an intimate history.
5. At an outdoor carnival, Moze agrees to lend a ride to a showgirl named Trixie Delight. Who plays the part of Trixie?

Answer: Madeline Kahn

Kahn was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in "Paper Moon", but would lose out to her young co-star, Tatum O'Neal.
6. Once Moze and Addie have left Trixie Delight behind, we next see them scamming a bootlegger into buying his own whiskey. Who plays the dual role of the bootlegger and his brother, the local sheriff?

Answer: John Hillerman

"Paper Moon" is one of four Peter Bogdanovich films that Hillerman has appeared in, along with "The Last Picture Show", "What's Up, Doc?" and "At Long Last Love".
7. Trying to evade the police, Moze and Addie must get rid of their car and find a different vehicle. Who plays the part of Leroy, the country boy that Moze must wrestle to swap the car for an old truck?

Answer: Randy Quaid

Randy Quaid's first film credit was Peter Bogdanovich's "The Last Picture Show". He is perhaps best known as Chevy Chase's uncouth cousin Eddie in "National Lampoon's Vacation".
8. When Moze and Addie finally arrive in St. Joseph, they continue to scam. However, Moze's plans don't work out. What happens to ruin them?

Answer: The sheriff from Kansas shows up, and he and his deputy rough up Moze.

Addie finds Moze near a street corner, lying at the bottom of some stairs, bleeding. Addie instinctively knows that their time together is over, and she's going to be taken to her relatives.
9. Broke and beat up, Moze finally delivers Addie to her Aunt Billie. Before getting out of the truck, what does Addie leave behind in an envelope for Moze?

Answer: A picture of herself sitting on a paper moon

The picture provides a visual link to the movie's title, but it also speaks volumes to the Moze/Addie relationship. Addie is expressing affection through the lens of what Moze has taught her: She leaves him something, but in an unspoken way, and with overly formal wording ("To Moze from Addie"). She is his product, and a natural at the same time.
10. At the end of the film, Addie flees her relatives and runs after Moze. How does she convince Moze to let her continue to ride with him?

Answer: She reminds Moze that he still owes her $200.

Before Moze can argue, the two must run after the truck, which is drifting down the road (since its brake doesn't work). They ride off into the distance, and the film ends to the tune of "(Keep Your) Sunny Side Up."
