Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the owner of Brinkley, the Golden Retriever in "You've Got Mail"?

Answer: Joe Fox

Joe Fox, played by Tom Hanks, is the owner of Brinkley. Joe Fox is the public face of Fox & Sons, a firm of booksellers. He had an unsatisfying relationship with Patricia Eden (played by Parker Posey), and was conversing on-line with Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan). Once he and Patricia broke up, he asked Kathleen (or 'Shopgirl', Kathleen's online persona) if she thought they should meet.

Joe and Brinkley are seen together frequently throughout the movie. Brinkley has some lovely moments in the movie, not the least of which is being the advance guard for Joe as he reveals himself as Kathleen's online friend.

Nelson Fox, father of Joe, was played by Dabney Coleman. George Pappas is an assistant in The Shop Around the Corner, owned by Meg Ryan's character, Kathleen Kelly.
2. What sort of dog is the ironically named Bruiser, who belongs to Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon) in "Legally Blonde" and "Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde"?

Answer: Chihuahua

As a society girl, carrying her tiny pet Chihuahua around is Elle Woods' trade mark. Bruiser accompanies her everywhere, usually wearing a stylish doggie vest. He even gets a makeover at the beauty parlour, having those hairy eyebrows tended to.

Elle decides to investigate the pedigree of Bruiser, and when she finds out that Bruiser's mother is being used in animal testing, it leads her to campaign for animal rights.
3. Ghosts George and Marion Kerby distract the attention of the house detective with a dog to help a friend escape, in which 1937 movie, starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett?

Answer: Topper

George and Marion Kerby are ghosts who must do a good deed before they can finally rest in peace. They decide to help Cosmo Topper (who gives his name to the movie) and seem to enjoy creating havoc in Topper's life. In this light, fanciful comedy, they manage to get Topper into trouble several times. Extracting Topper from the trouble they cause by creating a distraction with a dog is just one of the helpful things they do.
4. What inscription on the Borgia ring in "The Shaggy D.A." transforms Wilby Daniels into Elwood the shaggy dog?

Answer: In canis corpore transmuto

'In canis corpore transmuto' is inscribed on the ring and, when read aloud, has the power to turn Wilby Daniels into a dog. The phrase in the ring seems not to translate very readily into English (though I'm no Latin expert!) but 'In canis corpore transmute' means something along the lines of, 'Upon dog fleshly surrender', the idea of having the form (or body) of a dog.

'Dulce est desipere in loco' means 'It is sweet on occasion to play the fool', and 'nemo malus felix' means 'peace visits not the guilty mind'. 'Canis canem edit' means 'dog eat dog'.
5. Which hero of the silver screen preferred to be known by the name of the family dog, rather than his real given name, Henry, or Junior as he is also called?

Answer: Indiana Jones

We discover in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989) that Henry Jones Jr. had 'a lot of fond memories' of the family dog, whose name was Indiana. His father persists in calling him Henry or Junior until he really wants his attention, at which time he calls him Indiana.

We get a glimpse of the dog Indiana as a puppy during a flashback in the movie.
6. What are the names of the two dogs who accompany Tao, the Siamese cat, in an adventurous trip home in "The Incredible Journey"?

Answer: Luath and Bodger

"The Incredible Journey" is a book by Sheila Burnford, and is set in north-western Canada, the backdrop for the numerous exciting events the animals undertake. The first movie adaptation was made in 1963.

The name Luath means fleet or speedy and is of Irish origin, while a bodger was a carpenter who specialised in making chairs. The name Tao is an Asian name meaning apple or peach.

Tom and Jerry are a cat and mouse team; Bill and Ben are from English "The Flower Pot Men" children's program. Sam and Ralph were a sheep dog and wolf that appeared in several Merrie Melodies episodes.
7. The movie "Red Dog", which relates the touching story of a dog whose loyalty to his unofficial master finds him asleep on the master's grave, is set in the outback of which Australian state?

Answer: Western Australia

The movie is set in Dampier, an industrial port city located in the Pilbara region in the far north-west of Western Australia. When Red dog first arrived in Dampier, he attached himself to John Grant, and it is to John's grave Red Dog goes to die. The moving film is based on a true story.

The dog in Red dog is played by Koko, who died of congestive heart disease in 2012. Koko was awarded Best Dog in a Foreign Film at the inaugural Golden Collar Awards in Los Angeles in 2012.
8. In which 1992 comedy do Julian Peters and his companion, Phoebe, try to extract a reward from Madam Van Dougan by the return of her dachshund, but arrive at her estate in Monte Carlo to find she has been murdered?

Answer: Once Upon A Crime

"Once Upon a Crime" has quite a cast - John Candy, James Belushi, Cybill Shepherd, Sean Young, Richard Lewis, Ornella Muti, Giancarlo Giannini and George Hamilton. Julian and Phoebe arrive at the Van Dugan villa to find it in darkness, and apparently unoccupied. They are about to leave when they discover a diamond bracelet, which they consider would be suitable payment for the return of the dog - until realising the bracelet is attached to the arm of Madam Van Dougan's body.

It's a spoof on crime movies, with a twisting plot, reminiscent in places of Vaudeville. Sean Young was nominated for a Razzie Award as Worst Supporting Actress. In spite of its cast, it's not considered a great movie, and is certainly dated, but it has some quite funny moments.
9. In the 1980 film "Seems Like Old Times", who plays the female owner of the dogs whose disappearance leads to the discovery of fugitive Nick Gardenia in the garage?

Answer: Goldie Hawn

Nick Gardenia, played by Chevy Chase, gets into trouble and turns to his ex-wife, Glenda, played by Goldie Hawn, for help. The timing is unfortunate, as the guests at the party Glenda is giving when Nick arrives are all law enforcement officers. After a series of comical events, the whole thing ends up in court, dogs and all. In a funny twist at the end, Glenda later needs help and the only place around to get it is Nick's.

The screenplay for "Seems Like Old Times" was written by Neil Simon, who also responsible for The Odd Couple.
10. What was the real name of the dog who played the eponymous character in the 1943 movie "Lassie Come Home"?

Answer: Pal

Pal was a Long-Haired Collie, a breed originally used in Scotland for herding sheep. Pal was born in Hollywood and lived to be 18 years old. All the dogs in the original movies were male, not lassies at all.

In "Lassie Come Home", Lassie, who has been sold to another family, keeps finding ways to return to his original family. It's possible that there was a real-life Lassie who saved the life of a sailor in World War 1 and inspired the subsequent stories.
