Answer: He is carted off to a psychiatric hospital.

Freddy is a war veteran, confined to a wheelchair, and notes Prot's mysterious arrival with great interest. When the police question Prot, Freddy intervenes, saying, "He ain't done nothing." Nevertheless, after the officer requests that Prot remove his sunglasses, Prot replies, "Oh, I'd rather not. I'd forgotten, but I mean, wow, your planet is really bright." The officer calls into the station reporting that they have an E.D.P. (Emotionally Disturbed Person) The officers transport Prot to Bellevue.

3. Mark is somewhat exhausted after his day at the hospital and perhaps, still preoccupied with his interview with Prot. His wife, Rachel asks Mark, how his day was. Mark complains that the train was late, and that he should have taken another form of transportation. What does Mark glibly suggest that he should have done?

Obviously, the interview with Prot has already made a distinct impression on Mark. Even so, the arduous trip home and the influx of new patients has taken its toll. 4. It's been determined that Prot possesses quite an unusual ability. It's something that humans cannot do. What can Prot do?

After an analysis of Prot's visual range, Dr. Chakraborty reports to Mark, that Prot can detect light in the range of 300-400 angstroms, the ultraviolet light range. Mark says, "Chuck, wait a minute, I didn't think that human beings could see ultraviolet light." Chuck replies, "We can't."

5. During a family outing, Mark's relatives probe Mark about his relationship with his son. Mark is reluctant to discuss the issue, and suggests that his son is quite capable of picking up the phone to call home. Which college did Mark say that he put his son through?

After a glib demonstration of light travel, Prot is asked to diagram the orbital pattern that K-PAX takes through the Lyra system. Prot proceeds to enter a complex, yet precise representation of the orbital pattern. Steven, proceeds to input the calculation into a computer and they discover that Prot's diagram is perfect.

7. What has incited several floors of the psychiatric facility into a frenzy?

Answer: Howie has sighted a blue jay.

Prot has given Howie the first of three tasks to complete. The first of which, is to spot a 'bluebird'. Howie has abandoned all other activities, in order to complete his first task. Finally, Howie spots a blue jay outside of his window, during his constant vigil. He is so excited, that his enthusiasm is contagious. Even Doris emerges from her room. Everyone chants, "Bluebird!"

8. Mark has discovered that Prot plans to return to K-PAX on July 27th. Researching his records, Mark notes that it will have been exactly five years to the date. How do Mark's children refer to Prot, in anticipation of his arrival, at Mark's home?

Mark decides to invite Prot to his home, in order to provide some semblance of a home environment. Mark's children playfully refer to Prot as "spaceman". During a group meeting, Howie proposes that the patients have an essay contest to decide who will go back to K-PAX with Prot. The candidates are to state their reasons for wanting to go, in a clear legible hand, and submit them to Howie, before July 27th, the date of departure.

10. The day of Prot's anticipated return to K-PAX has arrived. Which patient has been chosen by Prot, to accompany him on his return to K-PAX?

The time has arrived. It's 5:51am and a flash of light enters Prot's room. Mark frantically makes his way to Prot's room. He finds a body under the bed. What appears to be the body of Prot, is wheeled out of the room. The other patients exclaim, "That's not Prot." "He's definitely not Prot." "Certainly not, Prot's gone." The other patients discover that Bess is missing. They congregate in her room and Howie reads her essay. "He chose Bess." Bess had written, "I have no home."

Prot has left a message for Mark: "I wanna tell you something Mark, something you do not yet know, that we K-PAXians have been around long enough to have discovered. The universe will expand, then it will collapse back on itself, then will expand again. It will repeat this process forever. What you don't know, is that when the universe expands again, everything will be as it is now. Whatever mistakes you make this time around, you will live through on your next pass. Every mistake you make, you will live through again, and again, forever. So my advice to you is to get it right this time around. Because this time is all you have."

Mark takes this advice to heart and reconciles with his son.
