Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Jaws," Amity Island, a small east coast resort destination, was terrorized on the Fourth of July weekend by a Great White Shark with a taste for blood. Brody, Quint, and Hooper set out to capture the shark, but how did the shark finally meet its bloody end in the first of many "Jaws" films?

Answer: Jaws exploded when the air tank in its mouth was shot by Brody.

"Jaws" remains one of the scariest movies ever made and it is mostly due to the fact that film manages to instill an extremely deep rooted fear of sharks that can follow the viewer throughout the rest of their days. However, like most thriller films, just because this villain was killed, doesn't mean that an entirely different one couldn't show up in the future (i.e. in the next film).

In fact, in "Jaws 2," the shark died by electrocution after it bit down on a huge electrical cord that Brody was using to bait it with.
2. This 1972 horror flick detailed the horrific kidnapping, torture, and murder of two teenage girls by a deranged group of four escaped criminals and sadistic torturers. The killers did get their karmic retribution after they made the mistake of deciding to spend the night with their victim's parents. What is the name of this film?

Answer: The Last House on the Left

"The Last House on the Left" was the first movie that Wes Craven wrote, directed, and edited. It was pegged as being horrifically gruesome and extremely visceral. The story for this film derived from Ingmar Bergman's film, "The Virgin Spring" (1960), which was based on a Swedish ballad from the 13th century.

Each of the murderers in this film met a fairly heinous death at the hands of the parents of Mari, the victim. I personally would not recommend this movie, unless you have a very strong tolerance for gore, torture, and extremely graphic violence.
3. This visceral torture film from 2005 centered around the unfortunate fate of a group of naive American college students who traveled to Slovakia, trusted the wrong people, and ended up being tortured and/or killed for pleasure and a price. While they didn't all make it out alive, one victim was able to get karmic retribution against his friend's killer. What is the name of this film?

Answer: Hostel

This film was written, produced, and directed by Eli Roth, and has been banned by certain countries because of its explicitly graphic violence.

The three college buddies departed for Bratislava in the search of beautiful women who love Americans, but only one man, Paxton, was able to get out of Europe alive. As Paxton was traveling on the train, he heard the voice of the killer of his friend, Josh, and he waited for the right opportunity to do to the businessman what was done to his friend Josh.
4. All work and no play really did make Jack a dull boy after he and his family decided to supervise the uninhabited Overlook Hotel during the winter season. Jack thought it would be a great chance to reconnect with his family and finish his novel, but instead the spirits from the burial ground beneath the hotel compelled him to go mad. While he was unsuccessful in killing his wife and son, it certainly wasn't for lack of trying. What is the name of this classic psychological horror flick?

Answer: The Shining

"The Shining" is one of the best horror films ever made, as the Torrance family's utter seclusion at the hotel provided a great setting for a thriller of this kind. The film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred Jack Nicholson and and Shelley Duvall.

Jack didn't listen when he was told that the previous caretaker had come down with "cabin fever" and had killed his entire family, but instead he decided to bring them to the Overlook. After Jack tried to kill his family, his fleeing son led him to the complicated hedge maze on the grounds; it was there that Jack lost his sense of direction and eventually froze to death. In Stephen King's original book version, Jack was killed by an exploding boiler that destroyed the entire hotel.
5. In "Drag Me to Hell," bank loan officer, Christine, was cursed by an old gypsy woman whose loan she refused. The curse was that Christine would be tormented for three days and then would be plunged into Hell to burn forever. Christine eventually figured out a way to rid herself of the curse and be saved. Was Christine spared from the fiery pits of Hell in the end?

Answer: No

Christine was tortured in the most bizarre ways throughout the film and you really do want her to succeed in her quest to stay alive. You are led to believe that she has removed the curse for awhile towards the end of the film, but then you realize, as Christine did, that she had made a fatal error in the execution of her plan to rid herself of the curse.
6. This thriller detailed the story of a public defender, Sam, and his family, who were terrorized by a rapist convict that blamed Sam for his incarceration. Sam's dog and private investigator were murdered, his coworker was brutally assaulted, and his daughter was threatened in numerous ways. In the end, Sam was able to save his family and get revenge. What is the name of this frightening thriller?

Answer: Cape Fear

This film was made in 1962 with Robert Mitchum as the villain, and was remade in 1991 with Robert De Niro as the infamous Max Cady. After Max followed the family to their houseboat upstate in Cape Fear, they all ended up having to battle for their lives.

After the boat was rocked by an intense storm, it began to sink. As Sam and Max battled it out, Sam was able to chain Max to the sinking boat and he watched him drown from the safety of the river's shore.
7. This suspense-thriller from 1967 was all about a vulnerable blind woman, Susy, who was manipulated, stalked, and attacked in her own apartment by a group of con artists who were convinced she had their doll stuffed with heroin. Susy defended herself as best as she could and was able to get the upper hand on her attacker when she broke all of the lights and equaled the playing field. What is the name of this frightening flick?

Answer: Wait Until Dark

"Wait Until Dark" starred Audrey Hepburn as Susy, and Alan Arkin as the ringleader of the group of criminals, Harry Roat. The gang was convinced that Susy had the heroin-filled doll because one of Harry's underlings had hidden the doll in Susy's husband's bags when they randomly encountered him at a security checkpoint in the airport.

The original trailer for this film showed just how vulnerable Hepburn's character was in the film and how she fought her hardest to survive. With Audrey Hepburn as one of the America's biggest sweethearts, everyone wanted to see her persevere and save herself.
8. The 2002 psychological thriller "The Ring" was all about a series of mysterious deaths that occurred exactly seven days after a person watched a bizarre videotape about the life and death of a troubled young girl, Samara. Rachel and her son, Aidan, were drawn into the mystery and Rachel needed to find a way to save herself and her son before the deadline was up. At the end of the film, Rachel and her son may have found a way to be spared, but was Rachel able to stop Samara from killing again?

Answer: No

While Rachel was able to spare herself and her son through "releasing" Samara from her location at the bottom of the "ring" well, she was not able to stop Samara from killing again. When Rachel told her son that she had freed Samara, her son became visibly shaken and told his mother that Samara never slept and that she would not stop.

It was at that point that the viewer finally discovered what actually happened to her cursed victims, as Rachel's ex-husband/Aidan's father was her next victim.
9. In Stephen King's film "Misery," author Paul Sheldon was severely wounded in a car crash and was "rescued" by Annie Wilkes, his "biggest fan." She forced him to write a new novel resurrecting the heroine he had killed off in his last book; in addition, she horrifically hobbled his ankles by hitting them with a sledgehammer to prevent him from leaving. In the end, how was Paul able to finally kill Annie and escape?

Answer: He hit her in the head with a typewriter and a small pig statue.

"Misery" was a great thriller that was made even more amazing by the acting of Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes, and James Caan as author Paul Sheldon. Annie's "hobbling" of Paul in the film was hands down one of the most creepy and horrible movie scenes I've ever witnessed, as the act itself was so extreme and painful to imagine.

Paul was finally able to escape from Annie after he lit his manuscript on fire, struggled with Annie, and eventually got the upper hand by using the pig statue and the typewriter.
10. This classic horror film from 1932 was all about a group of trusting and honorable circus sideshow performers who were duped by two "normal" people in the circus that conspired to murder one of the sideshow performers for his considerable fortune. Once the performers realized the "normals'" plan they took karmic revenge against them and horrifically deforming one into the "human duck." What is the name of this classic and haunting film?

Answer: Freaks

"Freaks" is an amazing example of an early 'Pre-Movie Code' horror film, and all of the sideshow performers in the movie were actual circus performers. The two "normals" were Cleopatra, a selfish trapeze artist, and Hercules, the strong man. Cleopatra married the sideshow 'midget' with the circus and the other performers decided to accept her, to which she responded with mocking and humiliating the performers for being freaks. Once they decided to seek revenge upon her for poisoning her new husband, they permanently tarred and feathered the lower part of her body and deformed her hands and her feet to make her look like a "duck woman."
