Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Key Largo Hotel is owned and operated by Mr. Temple, who is assisted by his beautiful daughter-in-law, Nora. With a hurricane approaching the Keys, a group of thugs are the only guests at the hotel. Why does Frank McCloud stop at the Key Largo Hotel?

Answer: He was with Mr. Temple's son George in the army.

Frank is on his way to Key West, with the notion of getting work on a boat. He was with George Temple when he was killed in Italy, and decides to pay a courtesy visit to his father and widow. He intends to make a brief stop, but they invite him to stay a while. Nora had written to him, but the letter never reached him.
2. The sheriff comes to the Largo Hotel looking for two Indians who have recently broken out of jail. Who are the two Indians?

Answer: The Osceola brothers

The brothers were serving a 30-day sentence for a bar fight when they broke out of jail. Mr. Temple convinces them to turn themselves in when the hurricane comes. The sheriff shoots them, under the mistaken impression that they have killed his deputy. In fact, the deputy was killed by Rocco and his goons. Winook is the family name of some Seminoles that Nora introduces to Frank.
3. Who was Frank's first sweetheart?

Answer: A boat

While tying up the hotel's boats in preparation for the hurricane, Frank tells Nora and Curly that his first sweetheart was a boat. After Rocco loses his transportation back to Cuba, Curly remembers this and Frank is coerced into taking the gang back to Cuba in the hotel's small boat. Gaye is Claire Trevor's character.
4. What does Johnny Rocco offer Gaye in exchange for a song?

Answer: A drink

Rocco is disgusted with Gaye's drinking and has forbidden anyone to give her alcohol. He offers her one drink in exchange for an a cappella song. She complies, but then Rocco refuses to give her the drink because she "stank." Frank pours her a drink and takes a slap from Rocco for his efforts.
5. Mr. Temple terrifies Johnny Rocco with a story. What does he tell Rocco?

Answer: That a tidal wave swept away 800 people in Matecumbe Key in 1935.

While everyone is locked in the house during the hurricane, Mr. Temple derides and berates Rocco. He prays loudly for a wave to sweep them all away, knowing that Rocco is afraid of the storm.
The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 was the strongest recorded hurricane ever to strike the United States. Among the victims were a crew of WWI veterans working on a bridge in the Florida Keys, as well as those on the evacuation train sent to take them to safety.
6. What is the "shipment" that Johnny Rocco has brought to the Largo Hotel?

Answer: Counterfeit money

Rocco has come from Cuba with a shipment of counterfeit money. Ziggy, another gangster, meets Rocco at the Largo Hotel to buy the counterfeit money. Prohibition ended in 1933, although the film's gangsters reminisce fondly about it. Heroin, and drugs in general, would be unlikely to be featured in a 1940s movie. Guns would be more likely to be shipped out of the U.S. than into it.
7. What do Johnny Rocco and the gangsters call Frank?

Answer: Soldier

Frank was a major in the Army, so Mr. Temple and Nora sometimes call him by that title. Rocco and his hoods address Frank derisively, as "Soldier."
8. Why does Gaye fling herself on Rocco and beg him to take her with him to Cuba?

Answer: She's picking his pocket to get his gun for Frank.

Who can say if Gaye loves, or ever loved, Rocco? Maybe he was nicer to her in the old days. Frank, however, has been kind to her, and it seems probable that the gangsters will kill him after he gets them to Cuba. Rocco does fancy Nora but she will have none of him.
9. What's the name of the boat that the gangsters take to escape?

Answer: The Santana

Rocco came by boat from Cuba, and his boat was anchored within sight of the hotel before the hurricane. However, after the hurricane, Rocco's boat is gone, either having fallen afoul of the weather or having been moved by the captain to safer waters. Rocco then commandeers the hotel's boat and orders Frank to pilot it. Santana was the name of Bogart's yacht, and of his short-lived production company. Betty is Lauren Bacall's real name, and this is what Bogart called her. "Sirocco" is the name of another Bogart film. "Bold Venture" was the title of a syndicated radio show from the 1950s starring Bogart and Bacall.
10. On the boat, Frank manages to overcome Rocco and four goons. How does he do it?

Answer: He knocks one overboard, shoots three, and Rocco shoots one.

It's kill or be killed on the boat. In rough seas, Frank asks one of the goons to check something astern, accelerates and knocks him overboard. He then shoots the other goon on deck and one more who comes up from the cabin. Rocco then shoots his last remaining goon for refusing to leave the cabin. Frank waits silently for Rocco to come out on deck, shooting him, too. Frank then heads back to Key Largo, where we may presume he stays happily ever after with Nora, and Mr. Temple, at Key Largo.
