Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The quintessential bungling cop was Inspector Clouseau, first played by Peter Sellers. What 1960's movie was the first in which Clouseau was the main character and not just part of the supporting cast? This movie introduced Commissioner Dreyfus and Cato as his foils.

Answer: A Shot in the Dark

Clouseau first appeared in "The Pink Panther" in 1963 but he was not the focus of the movie, David Niven's character, Sir Charles Lytton, aka the Phantom, was. Clouseau was so popular that the rest of the Pink Panther series would focus on him and not the Phantom. The second film in the series and the first where Clouseau was the main character was 1964's "A Shot in the Dark". In that movie Clouseau was called to the estate of a powerful Paris politician and asked to solve a murder. The main suspect was a beautiful maid who Clouseau fell in love with and therefore refused to believe the evidence that pointed to her guilt. She was in reality innocent but Clouseau had no clue.

The other movies in the series to feature Peter Sellers as Clouseau were "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975), "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976), "Revenge of the Pink Panther" (1978), and "Trail of the Pink Panther" (1982). Sellars died before the filming of the last one and unused footage from "Strikes Again" was used.
2. "Inspector Clouseau" (1968) continued the story started in "The Pink Panther" but Peter Sellers was replaced as the bumbling detective. Which actor took his place?

Answer: Alan Arkin

This was the third film in the "Pink Panther" series but was notable in that Blake Edwards was not the director, Sellers was replaced by Alan Arkin, and Henry Mancini did not write the score. Those three were filming "The Party" at the time and the production team decided to go ahead without them. The move was a big mistake. Although Arkin's performance influenced the "Pink Panther" movies that would follow, the film itself did not do well and has been considered the red headed stepchild of the series. In the film Clouseau was brought in by Scotland Yard because they fear they have a mole in the organization. Clouseau was asked to help solve a series of organized crimes being committed across Europe.

Alan Arkin has had a long and distinguished movie career beginning in the early 60s. This role was one of his earliest. One of his more memorable roles was as Capt. John Yossarian in "Catch-22" (1970). More recently he played Lester Siegel in "Argo" (2012).
3. In 2006, which actor took over the role of Inspector Clouseau, made famous by Peter Sellers in the 60s and 70s?

Answer: Steve Martin

In 2006, Clouseau was revived with Steve Martin playing the lead in "The Pink Panther". Although panned by critics, the film did well enough to facilitate a sequel, "The Pink Panther 2", in 2009, which was equally panned by critics. In the 2006 movie, Kevin Kline played Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus who assigned Clouseau to the Pink Panther case to keep the media occupied while he assembled a secret task force to solve the crime. The movie also featured Beyonce Knowles as Xania.

In "The Pink Panther 2", John Cleese took over the role of Dreyfus, who sent Clouseau to Japan as part of a Dream Team of officers charged with stopping the master criminal The Tornado.

Steve Martin has had a long career as a stand-up comedian, on TV and in the movies. He is probably best known for playing the title role in "The Jerk" (1979) and as the father in the remake of "The Father of the Bride" (1991) among many other films.
4. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost played a zealous, conscientious officer and his hapless new partner, respectively, in which 2007 cop buddy movie?

Answer: Hot Fuzz

"Hot Fuzz" was made much in the spirit of "Shaun of the Dead" in that it reverently poked fun at cop buddy movies in the same way that "Shaun" did with zombie movies. Pegg and Frost starred as buddies in both movies. In "Hot Fuzz" Pegg, as Nicholas Angel, was such a good police officer in London that he was making his fellow officers look bad, so he was reassigned to the sleepy little hamlet of Sanford.

There he was partnered with the bumbling and somewhat naive PC Danny Butterman, son of the local police chief. Unbeknownst to Angel, an extremely violent vigilante committee operated in the town.

The movie culminated in a shootout between Angel and Butterman on one side and the vigilantes on the other.
5. Which 1987 cop movie featured Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as veteran detectives who get themselves mixed up in all kinds trouble when one of them falls for the object of their surveillance?

Answer: Stakeout

"Stakeout" featured Richard Dreyfuss as Detective Chris Lecce and Emilio Estevez as Detective Bill Reimers. Madeleine Stowe played Maria Maguire, the object of their surveillance and of Lecce's affections, after he saw her for the first time. Maria was under surveillance because her ex-boyfriend had escaped from prison and the police were hoping that he would come to see her. Lecce became involved with Maria, which caused all kinds of chaos to ensue.
6. Which actor played the tough-as-nails undercover cop who got assigned to pose as a kindergarten teacher, in the 1990 movie "Kindergarten Cop"?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger played LA Detective John Kimble, a cop used to being undercover in the dangerous world of illegal drugs, not in a classroom full of 5 and 6 year-olds. Kimble's job was to find the ex-wife and son of a drug dealer named Cullen Crisp. He and his partner went undercover as kindergarten teachers in the hopes of locating the son. Comedy ensued as Kimble learned to deal with the children.

Arnold began his movie career with two iconic roles, "Conan the Barbarian" (1982) and "The Terminator" (1984). From there he built quite an extensive résumé as an action hero before turning to politics and becoming governor of California. He has since returned to acting and action roles.
7. Jack Palance played a veteran, no-nonsense detective, who was assigned to a stakeout in the home of a suburban family, who lived next door to a known hitman. Which "Saturday Night Live" veteran played the inept father of this family, in the 1994 movie "Cops and Robbersons"?

Answer: Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase played Norman Robberson opposite Jack Palance's Jake Stone. Stone and his partner commandeered the Robberson's home so they could stakeout their neighbor, a suspected mob hitman laying low in suburbia. Jake and his partner soon found out that this suburban family might be more trouble than the bad guys. Norman was obsessed with TV cop shows and wanted to help out, even though he was inept at best. The daughter Cindy (Fay Masterson) developed a crush on Tony David Barry Gray), Jake's partner. Chase was at his classic best and the bumbling father eager to please, even when he just messed things up.

Chevy Chase was one of the original cast members of "SNL" but only stayed with the show for one season. From there he went on to have a long movie career starring in such movies as "Foul Play" (1978) opposite Goldie Hawn, "Caddy Shack" (1980) along with Bill Murray, and the "National Lampoon Vaction" movies. In 2009, he returned to TV on the sitcom "Community".
8. The "Rush Hour" series of kung fu, comedy, cop buddy films featured Jackie Chan and which other actor?

Answer: Chris Tucker

Chris Tucker joined Chan in all three movies, "Rush Hour" (1998), "Rush Hour 2" (2001), and "Rush Hour 3" (2007). "Rush Hour" followed the story of Detective Inspector Lee (Chan) from the Hong Kong Police Force, as he came to Los Angeles help find the kidnapped daughter of the Chinese Consul. Tucker played Los Angeles Police Detective James Carter, who was the liaison officer for Lee. "Rush Hour 2" took place in Hong Kong while Carter was there on vacation visiting Lee. The two investigated a bombing at the US Consulate in Hong Kong. In "Rush Hour 3", the two chased a Triad assassin to Paris in order to arrest him.

Chris Tucker is best known for his role in these movies although he has had other roles most notably in "The Fifth Element" (1997) opposite Bruce Willis. He started on HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" series in the early 90s.
9. The 2012 movie "21 Jump Street" told the story of undercover cops in high school, much like the TV series it was based on. The movie starred Channing Tatum, Ice Cube and what other actor, known for his comedic roles in "Super Bad" and "Get Him to the Greek"?

Answer: Jonah Hill

Jonah Hill provided the comic relief for "21 Jump Street" the movie. Officers Morton Schmidt (Hill) and Greg Jenko (Tatum) were sent undercover, as brothers Doug and Brad McQuaid, to stop a drug gang in a high school. The name Jenko was the name of the original captain of the "Jump Street" program in the TV series. The name McQuaid was an homage to the TV series in which Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise, as Tom Hanson and Doug Penhall, respectively, went undercover as the McQuaid brothers several times. Depp and DeLuise also reprised the roles of Hanson and Penhall in the movie but now they were DEA agents.

Jonah Hill has already developed quite a résumé as a comic actor and also in dramas like 2011's "Moneyball" opposite Brad Pitt. His credits include "Super Bad" (2007), "Knocked Up" (2007), "Evan Almighty" (2007), "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (2008), and "Django Unchained" (2012).
10. Sandra Bullock played a tomboyish FBI agent who was assigned to undercover duty in a beauty pageant, in which 2000 fish-out-of-water cop movie?

Answer: Miss Congeniality

"Miss Congeniality" featured Bullock as Gracie Hart, Benjamin Bratt as her partner Eric Matthews, and Michael Caine as Victor Melling, her beauty pageant coach. Gracie was quite clumsy and awkward in the pageant world but somehow was able to foil the terrorist plot against the 75th Miss United States pageant even though no one believed her theory.
