Answer: Kirk Douglas

When Kubrick brought the script to Douglas' attention, Douglas read the screenplay and he said; "Stanley, we have to make this movie. It won't make a dime but we HAVE to make it." It was banned in France for 20 years.
2. Who wrote the novel "Paths of Glory" that the screenplay was adapted from?

Answer: Humphrey Cobb

Cobb got the title from the stanza of a poem "Elegy in a Country Church Yard", by Thomas Gray. "The paths of glory lead but to the grave". Cobb fought with the Canadian Army during the war, which was where he got the inspiration for his novel. He wrote another more famous novel which was also made into a film; "None But The Brave".
3. During which war does "Paths of Glory" take place?

Answer: World War I

It is about the French troops storming a German stronghold called the Ant Hill. The film opens during the midst of World War I, when the French are battling the Germans to take back an area the French call "The Ant Hill", a barren stretch of French land.

Joseph Turkel played the role of Private Arnaud. Turkel has had a long career in movies and television, appearing in series such as "Miami Vice", "Fantasy Island" and "Boy Meets World", to name only a few.

He is defiantly against cowardice and feels that, when some of the men are driven back due to huge enemy fire, they are retreating because of cowardice. He is so incensed that he radios all of his field staff to fire on the men who are returning to the trenches. His field staff refuse his orders to kill their own men without written orders, even though he is calling them on the radio.
7. How are the men to be executed?

Answer: Firing Squad

This was the common execution style for those times and has since been put aside for more lethal penalties such as lethal injection and the gas chamber.

Answer: Shell Shock

Fred Bell portrayed the shell shocked soldier who Mireau brutally slaps down claiming that there is no such thing and that he soldier is simply a coward. Shell shock is now called post traumatic stress disorder.
