Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I feel as though I'd lived through all of this before in another life."

Answer: The Philadelphia Story

Released in 1940, "The Philadelphia Story" centers on socialite and divorcée, Tracy Lord (Katherine Hepburn), on the eve of her second marriage. Complications arise when her first husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), arrives to sabotage the ceremony. Also appearing is Jimmy Stewart playing the reporter covering the event (Stewart's only Academy Award winning performance).

The last line is uttered by Tracy's Uncle Willie as Tracy marches down the aisle on the arm of Dexter who has convinced Tracy to re-marry him.
2. "I could write a book!"

Answer: The Egg and I

The movie is based on a real-life experience by author Betty MacDonald. In a "fish-out-of-water" plot, similar to the TV show "Green Acres", a city-raised woman (Claudette Colbert) marries a man (Fred MacMurray) whose dream is to start a chicken farm.

He quits his job and buys a dilapidated farm which Betty has to struggle to refurbish while dealing with unaccustomed circumstances and odd characters. On hand are Percy Kilbride and Marjorie Main playing Ma and Pa Kettle who proved so popular, they made a series of movies based on these characters.

The last line proved prophetic as Betty did write a best-selling book about her bucolic life.
3. "Where the devil are my slippers?"

Answer: Pygmalion

In his usual wry humor, George Bernard Shaw penned the story of an irascible language professor (Leslie Howard) who attempts to to improve a grungy flower girl's (Wendy Hiller) station in life by teaching her upper class English usage and pronunciation. Starting out as strictly a means to win a wager, Professor Higgins finds himself increasingly drawn to the guttersnipe. "Pygmalion" was made into the musical play and movie "My Fair Lady" that proved even more popular than the original straight play. Eliza returns to Higgins after fleeing what she perceived as ill-usage by him, but realizes that is just his temperament. Even when Higgins realizes she's back, he can't bring himself to show any outward fondness, so he utters the unemotional last line.
4. "All right, people, you've seen enough... Clear the sidewalk."

Answer: Stella Dallas

The plot focuses on Stella (Barbara Stanwyck), a divorced woman, and her relationship with her daughter. After Stella's failed marriage, she focuses on raising her daughter, Laurel (Anne Shirley), and sacrifices all in an attempt to see Laurel moving up in society.

However, she eventually realizes she must "let go" in her daughter's best interest. The last line is spoken by a police officer who is trying to clear the sidewalk after Laurel's wedding.
5. "What do you want, a happy ending?"

Answer: The Paleface

In this 1948 vehicle for Bob Hope, he plays a dentist, "Painless" Potter, who relocates out in the wild west and eventually marries Calamity Jane (Jane Russell). Hope sings "Buttons and Bows" which won the Academy Award for Best Song that year. When asked if he's leaving on his honeymoon, the final line is his wry answer.
6. "There's no place like home."

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

After Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) laments when her adolescent life seems to be falling apart, she is whisked away to a magical land by a tornado, where she meets some characters that vaguely resemble people she knows. In the end, she realizes that she can't run away from her problems and the old homestead isn't so bad after all. Ms. Garland, for her diminutive size, had a powerful singing voice and was a popular musical star in the '30s and '40s.

Unfortunately, her later years were marred by personal problems and substance use.

She was found dead in her home just days after her 47th birthday.
7. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" is considered by many film buffs to be one of the great romance films of all time. It starred Humphrey Bogart as the owner of a bistro in the title city. He is nonchalant until an old flame (Ingrid Bergman) arrives. In the end, she leaves.

After he watches her plane depart, he strikes up a conversation with Claude Rains' character about what he's going to do now. When Rains says they can make $10,000 francs from refugees anxious to get out of Casablanca, Bogart utters the final words.
8. "I'm not a cab driver, I'm a coffee pot!"

Answer: Arsenic and Old Lace

At the end of the movie, Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) is elated to find out he was adopted after observing eerie and disquieting behavior on the part of his "family". He runs from the house shouting "I'm not a Brewster. I'm the son of a sea cook!" A cabbie (Garry Owen), who had been waiting all night to take Mortimer to his wedding, then shouts out the last line.
9. "Well, nobody's perfect."

Answer: Some Like it Hot

The premise of this film is that two band musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) witness a mob hit. They disguise themselves as women and join an all-girl band to escape, which leads to some predictably awkward situations for the two men. At the end of the movie, Jack Lemmon, still in drag, is in a motorboat with Joe E. Brown who thinks Lemmon is the woman he wants to marry. Lemmon gives many reasons why the union wouldn't work and Brown counters every one. Finally, Lemmon pulls off his wig and says "I'm a man.", to which the undaunted Brown responds with the last line.
10. "Here's my hope - that we all find our Shangri-La."

Answer: Lost Horizon

This 1937 movie stars Ronald Coleman as a foreign diplomat, Robert Conway, who is attempting to rescue Chinese refugees. Their plane crashes in the Himalayan Mountains, but Conway and the other passengers are rescued and taken to Shangri-La. There is a secret agenda in their rescue, however, and Conway learns that the leader of Shagri-La (Sam Jaffe) is dying and seeking a replacement and has learned of Conway's wisdom from articles the diplomat wrote. Conway rejects the leadership and leaves. Conway retains no memory of Shangri-La, but on the way back to England he remembers and returns, but no search party can ever find him.

The last line is spoken by Lord Gainsford (Hugh Buckler) after toasting Conway saying he hoped he found his Shangi-La.
