Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie opens with the title song by a trio, and continually was backed throughout by harmony vocals from a trio with names based on classic 1960s girl groups. Which of these was NOT a name of one of the singers?

Answer: Shirelle

Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell were the actresses who played the singers. They harmonize and do background vocals in "Da Doo", "Suppertime", and others.
2. What event occurred in New York City that allowed Audrey II to be found by Seymour Krelborn?

Answer: Total solar eclipse

We see Seymour's boss early on reading a newspaper with the story on the "unexpected solar eclipse". Seymour tells his boss that a Chinese man sold him the plant after Seymour discovered it in the man's flower shop. The Chinese man had no idea he even had it but he sold it to Seymour anyway for $1.95.
3. Told to us by song lyrics and from viewing the sign front, you can name the shop on the floral district where Seymour bought the plant. What is it?

Answer: Chang's

You hear it in the background vocals; the singers sing "Chang Da-Doo" in the song "Da-Doo".
4. The plant spends some of its earliest time growing in a coffee can from a very popular coffee company. What coffee is on the label?

Answer: Maxwell House

The classic blue Maxwell House label adorns the coffee can, which Audrey II outgrows quickly after Seymour discovers her favorite food. (Or his. Theories abound both ways on the gender of the plant.)
5. In "Little Shop", we find Audrey has a rather sadistic boyfriend, Orin Scrivello, a dentist played by whom?

Answer: Steve Martin

The song done by Steve in his introduction in the movie was barely altered from the original Broadway play. Orin insists his girl refers to him as "Doctor".
6. Prior to Orin Scrivello's demise he had one last patient. Who played this rather joyful patient?

Answer: Bill Murray

This role was not in the original play, it was added for the movie. And the bulk of Bill Murray's lines were improvised during his masochistic willingness for hardcore dental work.

Christopher Guest and John Candy were both in the movie in cameo roles.
7. Seymour's boss, Mr. Mushnik, gets Seymour between a rock and a hard place and gets ready to turn him into the police. Mushnik uses his knowledge to try and blackmail Seymour into doing what?

Answer: Giving Mushnik Audrey II and leaving town

While Mushnik held Seymour at gunpoint getting him to go to the police for butchering Orin the dentist (who was actually dead already), he says if Seymour leaves town forever and gives Mr. Mushnik the plant exclusively, he would forget it ever happened. This goes badly for Mushnik as he is eaten whole by Audrey II.
8. Patrick Martin of World Botanical Enterprises offers Seymour a plan to market the Audrey II to the world. But Seymour declines. Who is it who plays Patrick Martin?

Answer: Jim Belushi

"Excuse me, excuse me, pardon me, beg your pardon, if you two kids would just stop singing for a moment..."

Jim Belushi in all of his salesmanship offers Seymour the deal of a lifetime. But Seymour and Audrey realize what Audrey II has in mind. That is when Seymour realizes what he has to do.
9. In an added song to the movie, Audrey II explains his origin to Seymour. What is the song?

Answer: Mean Green Mother From Outer Space

This song was complete with background vocals by pods emerging from the extensive fronds coming out of Audrey II.

Since "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" was an add to the movie from the original stage production, it was eligible for award consideration and received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. It had a lot of competition though; three of the songs would be Billboard Number One hits. One of them, "Take My Breath Away", kept "Mother" from winning. This would be the first of many Oscar nominations for the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken writing team.
10. Seymour Krelborn manages to win the head-to-head battle at the end. What method does he use to defeat Audrey II?

Answer: Electrocution

After a gun didn't work, his last resort is to grab a frayed electrical line and run it along one of Audrey II's many fronds. It made the entire plant explode. Seymour and Audrey then leave Skid Row forever to live a peaceful, "Better Homes and Gardens" life in a suburb far away.

OR DID THEY? (we see a small Audrey II peeking out of the garden at the end.)
