Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the entire trilogy of the "Lord of the Rings" filmed?

Answer: New Zealand

The mountains, the hill tops, the trees and all the other scenery of this location created J.R.R. Tolkien's land of Middle Earth. It took four years to go to all the locations in New Zealand to create the world of Middle Earth but Peter Jackson and his crew made it through the years and finally finished the trilogy in 2003.
2. Where was the set of Hobbiton filmed?

Answer: Waikato

The entire Hobbiton village was created in the hillsides of the Waikato, which is in Matamata. This set is the furthest north out of all the places Peter Jackson and the crew and actors filmed. Found in Northern New Zealand, Matamata's grass and hills were perfect for the peaceful scenes.
3. Which place in Middle Earth was filmed in Wellington?

Answer: Moria

Moria was one of the studio scenes of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. It was filmed at Wellington's three foot six studios all around Camperdown Rd. There were no stone halls in the mountains in New Zealand and the effects, such as the water monster and Balrog, made it hard to shoot in an actual location. Wellington, where all the studios were, is the capital of New Zealand.
4. Lothlorien was filmed in Canterbury.

Answer: False

Canterbury was the set of Edoras. Lothlorien's set was in Queenstown. Though most of its scenery was made by the crew of the "LOTR" and put into the movie, this location also provided lots of the beauty seen in the movie. Canterbury contains some of New Zealand's highest peaks.

As Edoras is found on a hill, Mount Sunday was picked in this area. Queenstown was not only the setting for Lothlorien but also the set of the Prancing Pony and other sets in that area of southern New Zealand.
5. Upper Hutt was the set of which place in Middle Earth?

Answer: Rivendell

Though the backgrounds in most of the shots are mostly drawings from Alan Lee, or miniatures done by other crew members, Upper Hutt provided a lot of the scenery that made the scenes in Rivendell look realistic. Upper Hutt is found in the Nelson Region which is full of wide open spaces, beaches, lakes and national parks.
6. Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith were filmed in the same location.

Answer: True

Both strong fortresses were filmed in Lower Hutt in New Zealand. This scenery provided the landscape of the battle scenes that partly took place in these locations and the place where both castles stood in the films. Minas Tirith was the fortress that was built separately, in pieces, all over a side of a hill near a populated area.

Helm's Deep, as a smaller building, was one of the first miniatures built in the making of the films, with some scenes filmed in the area of Minas Tirith.
7. Which location in Middle Earth was filmed around Milford Sound?

Answer: Fangorn Forest

This is the forest that grows in the soil around Milford Sound. Though Treebeard and all the other Ents don't actually dwell in its greenery, this location was the perfect place for the scenes, since its thick, dark trees were close to matching the description written by J.R.R. Tolkien in his books. During the filming of "The Two Towers", this location was one of the most used as sets for different scenes in Middle Earth.
8. Where were the Misty Mountains filmed?

Answer: Southern Alps

While Takaka and Nelson were also a location used in the movie, the Southern Alps was the best location that made the Misty Mountain scenes come to life, as a long chain of mountains. The Southern Alps are snow tipped mountains with grassy centres that shadow Milford Sound and the forest that surrounds it.
Teanau Mountains does not exist but the location Teanau was the set of the Dead Marshes.
9. Where was Mordor, Emyn Muil filmed in the movies?

Answer: Taupo Region

This region holds the landscape of the one place that Frodo was trying to get to throughout the movies, starting from the end of "The Fellowship of the Ring". This location is near Waitako, in the Northern Island of New Zealand. It has cliffs and waterfalls and a dusty volcano used as Mount Doom in the movies. Taupo is also known as a great trout fishing area with world class lodges and ski fields.
10. What is the name of the volcano used to film Mount Doom?

Answer: Mount Tongariro

The Taupo Region is the home of this compound volcano, which is a volcano that has more than one feature. It is found in the Northern Island of New Zealand in the Taupo volcanic zone. Mount Tongariro is the most active volcano out of the three most active ones in the region. It had more than 70 erruption since 1839 and the last ones were between 1973 and 1975. This volcano area is filled with the emerald lakes and neighbors a large amount of forest.
