Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Donald Shebib directed this 1970 movie about two men, Pete (Doug McGrath) and Joey (Paul Bradley), who go to Toronto in search of a better life. Although the plan initially works out, many more obstacles will show up along the way. Which classic Canadian movie is this?

Answer: Goin' Down the Road

Pete and Joey get jobs that pay $2, but as time goes by, they manage to buy a small apartment, get girlfriends and even get married. Joey marries Betty (Jayne Eastwood) when he learns she is pregnant. After being laid off, they try to rob a supermarket, which of course, did not work.

The film has been compared to literary masterpiece "The Grapes of Wrath", and a sequel, "Down the Road Again", was released in 2011.
2. In 1971, the National Film Board of Canada released one of the most successful Canadian films of all time. Directed by Claude Jutra, this film shows the pre-Asbestos Strike Quebec from the perspective of a 15-year-old boy. Which movie is this?

Answer: Mon Oncle Antoine

"Mon Oncle Antoine" is set before the Asbestos Strike, a four-month long strike by asbestos miners which was very violent, as the miners killed and kidnapped people as a way of protest. This event is said to have shaped Canadian history, particularly that of Quebec.

The movie stars Jacques Gagnon and Jean Duceppe, and tells the story of Benoit, a 15-year-old boy living in a mining town, showing how society was back then.
3. "Les Ordres", also known as "Orders", was a 1974 Canadian movie which talked about the 1970 October Crisis, an event that happened under then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and resulted in the incarceration of five people. Which cinematographer, who won the Best Director Award in the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, directed and wrote the movie?

Answer: Michel Brault

Michel Brault was certainly a cinema aficionado, as he was a cinematographer, writer, producer, director, and cameraman! He directed more than ten films, and was recognized by many different organizations throughout his lifetime.

"Les Ordres", starring Jean Lapointe and Guy Provost, is a scripted movie, although based on interviews with those unfairly incarcerated during the October Crisis, which was a series of battles between the Canadian government and the FLQ.
4. "Good Riddance", also known as "Les Bons Débarras", is a 1979 film directed by Francis Mankiewicz, about a little girl named Manon, who wants her mother exclusively for her. Which actress plays Manon?

Answer: Charlotte Laurier

The film tells the story of Michelle, who has to deal with both her unstable daughter Manon and her mentally challenged brother Guy. Michelle is in a relationship with the police captain Maurice. Manon dislikes both her uncle and the policeman, as she wants her mother's attention only for her.

Charlotte Laurier also appeared in films like "The Dame in Color" and "The Tin Flute".
5. This 1986 comedy movie, written and directed by Denys Arcand, stars Dominique Michel and Dorothée Berryman, as well as Arcand's brother, Gabriel. The film revolves around eight students of the Department of History of the Montreal University. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: The Decline of the American Empire

At the beginning, it seems like it is a normal conversation about politics and work, but tension begins to build as one of the students reveals she has had affairs with two people who are there, in the same room, creating a rather awkward situation.

This movie dominated the 1987 Genie Awards, as it won an outstanding number of nine awards.
6. David Cronenberg directed 1988 film "Dead Ringers", about two gynecologists who are identical twins. Which English iconic actor, who voiced Scar in "The Lion King", starred in this movie?

Answer: Jeremy Irons

"Dead Ringers" reminds its viewers of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, identical twin gynecologists who were found dead in 1975, as they were in a process of withdrawal from barbiturates. The script of the film is based on "Twins" by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland.

Jeremy Irons is an Academy Award winner, who has appeared in films such as "Reversal of Fortune" and "Elizabeth I".
7. Denys Arcand directed a 1989 movie nominated for the 1989 Academy Awards, and winner of the Genie Award for Best Canadian Film, also in 1989. Which religious figure completes the name of the movie, "_____ of Montreal"?

Answer: Jesus

"Jesus of Montreal" is about actor Daniel Coloumbe (played by Lothaire Bluteau), who is invited to play the role of Jesus in the church Passion Play. The film was recipient of numerous awards, like the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury in the Cannes Film Festival of 1989. The movie had already appeared in the "Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time" list, in 1993.
8. "The Sweet Hereafter", novel written by Russell Banks, was adapted into a movie in 1997, which explores the decisions of parents whose son just died in a school bus accident. Which director, who has Egyptian and Armenian roots, was in charge of this movie, and wrote the screenplay as well?

Answer: Atom Egoyan

The movie, set in British Columbia, narrates the grieving process of two parents after their son (and other children) died in a school bus accident.

Interestingly, Atom was named this way because the first nuclear reactor in Egypt had just been completed. Egoyan rejected his Armenian descent for most of his life.
9. "Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner" is a 2002 movie directed by Zacharias Kunuk. It is set in the Arctic Inuit nation, centuries ago, and narrates an Inuit legend focused on the love story of Atuat, who is in love with Atanarjuat (Natar Ungalaaq), but their love must face many obstacles. What was special about this film?

Answer: First film ever written, directed and acted entirely in Inuktitut

Inuktitut is an Inuit language with Eskimo origins. It is mostly spoken in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, a province inhabited by the Inuit people. Zacharias Kunuk presides the Isuma production company with Paul Apak Angilirq, Pauloosie Qulitalik and Norman Cohn.
10. This 2003 movie was written and directed by Denys Arcand, and starred Rémy Girard as a character with his same name. The film was incredibly successful, as it won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the 76th edition of this award ceremony. Which movie is this?

Answer: The Barbarian Invasions

This film is the second in a series; it is preceded by "The Decline of the American Empire", and it was followed by "Days of Darkness". The film shows the characters of "The Decline of the American Empire" all grown up, and show their children and the new ways of thinking as generations pass.
