Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What item do Frank DeMarco (Alec Baldwin) and Tommy Boyle (Paul Lazar) bring aboard the Long Island Expressway?

Answer: A gun

The Cucumber Frank DeMarco played by Alec Baldwin in only his second film, nods his approval as he and Tommy shoot The Fat Man, played memorably by "Mr. Clean", Captain Hagerty. Demme often uses actor Paul Lazar, who plays Tommy, in different roles in his films.

He was in "Silence of the Lambs", this, as well as most memorably in "The Manchurian Candidate". This memorable opening scene parodies the mundane life of the Long Island commute by having our two Mafiosos shoot the Fat Man in plain view and then exit the train, complaining, "I don't know how these people do it every day!?" "Yeah, it's like sardines!"
2. What street side con game is Joey DeMarco and Tony Russo Jr. operating in the back yard of the family home in the beginning of the film?

Answer: Three Card Monte

The enterprising youth of mafia families. These cute kids are making a couple extra bucks when honorable Angela DeMarco rolls up and squashes their lunch money drive. She is thoroughly beautiful in every scene in this movie. Joey DeMarco is played by Anthony J. Nici, he also played Robert DeNiro's character as a youth in "Awakenings".
3. Angela and Frank argue the last time she sees him. What among many things, do they argue about most?

Answer: Frank being married to the mob

Yes, Frank is a dedicated soldier. Unfortunately, he is also dedicated to Karen Lutnick (Nancy Travis), who is also Tony's mistress as well. Angela is tired, as she says, of having to "bail him out of jail, not knowing when he is coming home and if he is coming home", as she says in an early argument in the film.

She turns down her mafia friend's dinner invitations and ignores the Tony and Tommy's overt overtures to include her in activities. This causes cattiness and tension throughout the opening act.
4. What is the name of the adult motel that Tony Russo and the soon to be late Karen Lutnick meet at?

Answer: The Fantasia

Ahhh, the murder scene. Frank arrives after Tony leaves, but as Tony is leaving he gets a tiger's hunch and decides to stay around. He walks back into the room, hears Karen call for Frank and then shoots her dead. Tony the Tiger Russo then lies in wait as Frank enters and strips. Frank cheerily traps himself into his own demise. "It's check-out time, Frank". Perhaps one of the more quotable characters of all film history, Dean Stockwell turns in a marvelous performance as the heroic villain mafioso of Long Island.
5. What trademark maneuver does Tony The Tiger Russo perform after this double murder at the adult motel?

Answer: Flips gun around finger

Tony "The Tiger" Russo has style and some may even root for him. Great fashion and intuition and power, though he can't fool everyone all the time. Stockwell was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for this role. He won the National Society of Film Critics Award and also Best Supporting Actor at the New York Film Festival.

Incidentally, casting director Howard Feuer, was nominated for an Artios, the Oscar of the casting industry. Perhaps the best casting of any film in modern history. Character actor (Trey Wilson, Joan Cusack) and star power (Michelle Pfeiffer) and actors on the rise (Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt), Feuer really was doing his job well in this film.

He passed away in 2004 after a marvelous 50 year career casting other great films such as "The Silence of the Lambs", "Dead Poet's Society", "Reversal of Fortune", "The Truman Show", "Moonstruck", "Groundhog Day", "To Die For" and "Basic Instinct".

He acted out the infamous scene with Sharon Stone in the interrogation scene and quickly knew he had the right woman for the job. Howard Feuer was a legend in the art of casting feature films.
6. What does Mike Downey, F.B.I., tell Angela his name is, when they meet awkwardly?

Answer: Mike Smith

He lies and says he is a plumber. He is so bizarre in his initial encounters with Angela DeMarco. She is initially attracted to him because he appears honest. He accepts a date with her only to investigate her role in Frank's death further. He then becomes extremely attracted to her. Who wouldn't? This is Michelle Pfeiffer's finest performance and she puts a lot on the line in each scene.

This is a film of female empowerment and I am surprised no recognition has ever been paid to this script for having an honest female portrayal on screen. Pfeiffer's depiction of mafia housewife, Angela DeMarco, blows away Edie Falco's depiction of mafia house-wife, Carmela Soprano. Angela is a more complex character with more extreme circumstances and a better sense of humor as well.
7. A disparate, dejected Angela resorts to taking advice from a friendly mariachi performer on the street.

Answer: False

The street performer is actually a "Spoon Man", pre-Soundgarden. This man tells her to apply at Chicken Lickin' next door because they have a sign in the window. So she applies and is told to try on the uniform and is spied on. Jonathan Demme player Tracey Walter plays the perverted restaurant owner. I would have spied on Pfeiffer too. Walter also appeared in "Beloved", "Philadelphia" and in the 1991 Best Picture "Silence of the Lambs". Jonathan Demme often works with the same cast and crew members. Perhaps one day more prominent members of this film's cast will re-team with Demme for another film. One can only dream for now.
8. Which costume or character does Downey NOT play while investigating the Russo crime family?

Answer: Construction Worker

Master of disguises. Not! Russo can easily piece it together that Downey is a fraud. Downey doesn't even bother to change his look much. Russo (Dean Stockwell) is the only one who can figure it out, but it basically is too late. The classic 1940s gumshoe music that starts as Russo stands in the hotel lobby staring at Downey (Matthew Modine) is always hilarious.

He imagines Downey walking by in several of his costumes and imagining Downey re-say his classic line of "A regular menace to society", arguably the strangest quote in the film. Tony "The Tiger" Russo was a social critic apparently.
9. What is the name of the Jamaican-themed hair salon Angela is hired at by Rita?

Answer: Hello Gorgeous

Played by Reggae star, Sister Carol East, she brings authenticity to the role of the salon keeper caught up in the mafia investigation. One of many musicians to appear in this film. She also has a small role in "Something Wild" and sings memorably over the closing credits of that great film.
10. Which musician does NOT appear in "Married To The Mob" in any way shape or form?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Isaak plays a hit man in a role that was cut out of the film but he appears in the credits. Johansen (Buster Poindexter) appears as the priest in the funeral scene. Goetzman, a pianist and movie producer in real life, plays a pianist that serenades Tony The Tiger memorably. A fantastic movie! Watch it today!
