Movie Line Jeopardy Trivia Quiz

"Name that movie" was a game that was played into the early morning when my friends and I were in college. It usually went from coffee shop to coffee shop with us as we endeavored to avoid our studies. These were a few of my favorites.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start out with one from a famous thriller: Movie Lines for $200, Alex. "Richard, do you want to get shot?"

Answer: The Fugitive

Dr. Richard Kimball is falsely accused of murdering his wife, and is pursued by Deputy U.S. Marshall, Sam Gerard, after a train hits the bus that was bringing him to prison.

Kimball has come to a dead end in a drainage tunnel spilling off over a dam. Gerard orders Kimball to put his gun down, turn around, and get down on the ground, while standing in the drain pipe that spills over the dam. He asks this when Kimball hesitates in complying.
I don't know, I'd take getting shot over jumping off of that dam!
2. Let's move on to theater adaptations. Movie Lines for $1000 Alex. "Pragmatism. Is that all you have to offer?"

Answer: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" is Tom Stoppard's adaptation of Shakeapeare's "Hamlet". This screenplay is true to the stage production and is full of quotable routines and one-liners. Gary Oldman and Tim Roth play the title characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they go through the story of "Hamlet". This story shows us what the characters are doing when they aren't "on stage".

After the Player (played by Richard Dreyfuss) tells the pair that "he knows which way the wind is blowing", a reference to Hamlet's "when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw." Guildenstern proceeds to go into a long monologue about how to tell which direction the wind is blowing, based upon the time of day and the position of the sun.
Rosencrantz is getting sick of Guildenstern's long monologue and asks him "Why don't you go take a look?"
Guildenstern responds with this great line.
3. Hmmm, that was a little tough, let's try Movie Lines for $800, Alex. "Would you be prepared if gravity reversed itself?"

Answer: Real Genius

Brainiac college students just want to graduate, but are taken advantage of by their corrupt professor, who is trying to build an orbital laser weapon for the military. The students find out and get the last laugh!

One of Val Kilmar's first film roles, "Real Genius" is a fast-paced film and the viewer is bombarded with gags and lines constantly. This is a throw-away line of Chris Knight's (Val Kilmar) that is used as Mitch (Gabriel Jarret) enters their dorm room and sees him standing on his head for no apparent reason.

Chris Knight: "What I can't figure out is how to keep the change in my pockets...I know! Nudity!"
4. Let's dial it back a bit. Movie Lines for $400 Alex. "Yes, you're very smart. Shut up."

Answer: The Princess Bride

"The Princess Bride" is the penultimate faerie tale, suitable for any age. The action plays out as a grandfather (Peter Falk of "Columbo" fame) reads the story to his grandson (Fred Savage of "The Wonder Years), who is home sick from school.

Grandson: "See! I told you she'd never marry that mean old Humperdink!"
Grandpa: "Yes. You're very smart. Shut up."
Haven't we all dreamed of telling this to our children?
5. That wasn't bad, let's try Movie Lines for $600, Alex. "Poor John. Who says poor John? Don't everybody sob at once! My God, if I went up in flames there's not a living soul who'd pee on me to put the fire out!"

Answer: The Lion In Winter

This Oscar-winning film stars two of the greatest actors of all time, in Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn. It is the story of the English royal family of Christmas, 1183. King Henry II and his family gather at Chinon to greet the young King of France, played superbly by Timothy Dalton.

This line is uttered by Nigel Terry ("Arthur" from the 1981 movie "Excalibur") portraying Prince John. He says this while sulking on the ground, after he is told that he is no longer the chosen heir to Henry II's throne.
His brother Richard's (Anthony Hopkins, in his feature film debut) response "Let's strike a flint and see..." was exactly what the audience was thinking at that moment!
6. I like that level, let's keep it at Movie Lines for $600 Alex. "Like I told my last wife, I said, 'Honey, I never drive faster than I can see, and besides... it's all in the reflexes.'"

Answer: Big Trouble in Little China

Legend has it that this script was a heavily re-worked version of the sequel "Buckaroo Banzai: Against the World Crime League". This kung-fu magic act is a good vs. evil story of Jack Burton, Wang Chi, and Egg Shen taking on the immortal David Lo Pan and his servants, the mystical Three Storms.

Jack (Kurt Russell) loves to talk, and this is a part of his litany into the CB radio in his truck ("The Porkchop Express") at the beginning of the film. "It's all in the reflexes..." becomes a running gag line throughout the film.
7. Ummm, how about Movie Lines for $400 Alex. "This place has a sign hangin' over the urinal that says, 'Don't eat the big white mint'."

Answer: Road House

The owner of a bar in a small town hires James Dalton, the best "cooler" in the business, to clean his place up. When the job proves to be a little more than Dalton expected he calls on his friend and mentor Wade Garrett to give him a hand.

This was the line that Wade Garret (Sam Elliot) gives Dalton (Patrick Swayze) over the phone when Dalton asks him for help.

Wade: "You having some trouble?"
Dalton: "Nothing I'm not used to, but it's amazing what you can get used to"
Wade: "Tell me about it. This place has a sign hangin' over the urinal that says, 'Don't eat the big white mint'."
8. How about Movie Lines For $1000, Alex? "It is in your nature to do one thing correctly: Tremble."

Answer: Manhunter

The vastly under-rated and over-shadowed "Manhunter" showcases the first appearance of Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecktor. He is tapped by Wil Graham (William Peterson of "CSI" fame), an FBI profiler, to assist in finding the "Tooth Fairy" killer, Francis Dollarhyde.

The evil and twisted Dollarhyde speaks to "Tattler" reporter Freddy Lounds, whom he has kidnapped and will murder because of articles Lounds has published. This film is based on the book, "The Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris.
9. Movie Lines for $200 please, Alex. "I know the Presidents' Chief Advisor, we were at MIT together. And, at this point in time, you really don't want to take advice from a man who got a 'C minus' in astrophysics."

Answer: Armageddon

A "global-killer" asteroid the size of Texas is on a collision course with Earth. Their only hope is a bunch of oddballs that happen to be the best deep-core drillers in the world. I HATE it when that happens!

Jason Isaacs as Dr. Ronald Quincy, explaining to Keith David's Lt. General Kimsey that the only way to blow up the asteroid is to drill into it and get the explosives inside. General Kimsey quotes the President's Chief Advisor, who claims that a nuclear explosion on the surface of the asteroid will solve the problem. Dr. Quincy puts him in his place.
It's hard to believe that is Lucius Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies sitting at that table, isn't it?
10. Let's close out the catagory with Movie Lines for $800, Alex. "We're going to give you a fair trial, followed by a first-class hangin'"

Answer: Silverado

This 80's gem resurrected the classic Western in Hollywood. Four men team up to save the town of Silverado from the corrupt Sheriff and his deputies.

The corrupt Sherriff Cobb (Brian Dennehy) explains to Mal (Danny Glover) that he's going to be killed as Mal is being beaten in town by the deputies. Cobb tries to coerce Mal by saying he'll let him go...all he has to do is give up Emmitt's (Scott Glenn) hide out. "Silverado" has a great ensemble cast, and also stars Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Linda Hunt, John Cleese, and Rosanna Arquette.
