Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

Released in 1994, "The Shawshank Redemption" is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all-time. Adapted from the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", the movie was nominated for seven Oscars at the 1995 awards, but didn't win a single award.

The tagline hints at the spirit and determination shown by Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover, a charge he vehemently denies.
2. An offer you can't refuse.

Answer: The Godfather

Generally regarded as the best of "The Godfather" trilogy, the original movie, released in 1972, chronicles the passing of control from the aging mafia patriarch Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to his son Michael (Al Pacino). Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Mario Puzo, "The Godfather" was the highest-grossing film of 1972.

The tagline refers to the line uttered by Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" which should be interpreted as "he better do as I say or I will kill him".
3. Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.

Answer: Schindler's List

Based on the novel "Schindler's Ark" by Thomas Keneally, the 1993 Spielberg epic "Schindler's List" tells the true story of greedy businessman turned humanitarian Oskar Schindler, who saves over one thousand Jews from being gassed at Auschwitz by employing them in his factories.

The movie is primarily shot in black and white, however colour appears in the form of a little girl in a red coat, whose death is the catalyst for Schindler's change in attitude and subsequent humanitarian actions. The tagline is an adaptation of a quote from the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism - "Whoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.".
4. Losing all hope is freedom.

Answer: Fight Club

Released in 1999, "Fight Club" is directed by David Fincher and stars Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden, and Edward Norton as the nameless first person narrator. Cited as one of the most controversial films of 1999, in part due to its explicit violence and moral ambiguity, "Fight Club" didn't fare as well at the cinema as the studio had expected, however it became a cult classic after it was released on DVD later in the same year.

The tagline twists the expected negative connotations associated with losing hope to suggest that this is actually the way to achieve true freedom, as when you stop trying to make yourself like someone else, stop yearning for material things, and accept your flaws, that is when you are truly free.
5. Life Is In Their Hands -- Death Is On Their Minds!

Answer: 12 Angry Men

The 1957 courtroom drama "12 Angry Men" was written and co-produced by Reginald Rose, adapted from his own teleplay of the same name. The movie was nominated for three Oscars at the 30th Academy Awards held on 26th March 1958, but lost out to "The Bridge on the River Kwai" in all three categories.

The tagline is a direct reference to the role that a jury has in considering the potential punishment for the defendant, which could be imprisonment, or in some cases (including the case dealt with in the movie), death.
6. Your mind is the scene of the crime.

Answer: Inception

"Inception" had its world premiere in London's Leicester Square on 8th July 2010, and went on to smash the box office, grossing over $800 million worldwide. The writers have give a subtle nod to the movie's plot of "infiltration of the subconscious" via the first names of the main characters - Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal and Saito - the initials of which spell out DREAMS.

The tagline gives a nod to the overall plot of the movie, which takes place in the various layers of dreams.
7. If he's crazy, what does that make you?

Answer: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Based on the 1962 Ken Kesey novel of the same name, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" was released in 1975 and stars Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy, who pleads insanity to avoid hard labour on a prison farm, and ends up being sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" was the second movie in history (after "It Happened One Night" in 1934) to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, and Screenplay). The tagline is challenging our understanding of what "normal" is, suggesting that this is generally forced upon each and every one of us, and that stepping out of line and going against what is generally accepted as "normal" has a steep price to pay for that kind of behavior, as the movie's protagonist, Randle McMurphy, discovers.
8. In a world that's powered by violence, on the streets where the violent have power, a new generation carries on an old tradition.

Answer: Goodfellas

Directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 1990, "Goodfellas" stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci as three New York gangsters who gradually climb the ladder from petty crime to violent murders. The movie was adapted from Nicholas Pileggi's 1986 non-fiction book "Wiseguy", that chronicles the story of Mafia mobster-turned-informant Henry Hill, including the infamous Air France robbery in April 1967.

The tagline is a pretty direct reference to what happens in the movie, with the three protagonists carrying on the traditional "work" done my the mafia as part of a new generation of gangsters.
9. Be Afraid Of The Future.

Answer: The Matrix

Released in 1999, "The Matrix" is the first of three movies in "The Matrix" science fiction franchise created by The Wachowskis, and, as with "The Godfather" trilogy, it is the first movie that is generally regarded as the best of the trilogy by critics and movie-goers alike.

The movie makes great use of special effects, and introduced us to the move now known as "The Matrix" where Neo leans backwards to avoid bullets fired at him by Agent Smith. The tagline is capturing the essence of futurity - that no mortal being can fully control what happens in the future, hence the inevitable "fear of the unknown".
10. In a world where nothing is what it seems you've got to look beyond...

Answer: The Usual Suspects

Written by Christopher McQuarrie, the 1995 neo-noir mystery film "The Usual Suspects" was directed by McQuarrie's regular collaborator, Bryan Singer, and stars Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kevin Spacey.

The movie was recognised at the 68th Academy Awards as Christopher McQuarrie won the Best Original Screenplay award, and Kevin Spacey won the Best Supporting Actor award. Shown on posters advertising the film, the movie's title "The Usual Suspects" appeared directly after this tagline.

This is a nod to the plot of the film, where five known criminals are brought together for questioning about a crime, presumably because, given their "previous", they are prime suspects for having been involved.

As they have had no involvement in the crime, they decide to get revenge on the police, a plan which, of course, leads to less than favourable results!
