Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, an officer in the Union army, is stationed on the western frontier at Fort Sedgwick. In what movie does he earn the respect and trust of the Sioux Indian tribe and develop a friendship with the wolf Two Socks?

Answer: Dances With Wolves

"Dances with Wolves" (1990) was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won seven of them, including Best Director for Kevin Costner and Best Picture. The film is an adaptation of Michael Blake's novel of the same name and relates the story of a Union army soldier who occupies a military post alone on the American frontier.

The movie was shot in South Dakota and Wyoming and uses the Lakotan language throughout much of the film. Kevin Costner's character, Lieutenant John Dunbar, rescues Stands With a Fist, who is the adopted daughter of the Sioux Medicine Man, Kicking Bird. Dunbar helps defend the tribe against the Pawnee.

Some of the most touching scenes involve the relationship he forms with Two Socks, a curious wolf he befriends while manning Fort Sedgwick.

The role of Two Socks was actually played by two wolves, Buck and Teddy. A third wolf was also used in production because Buck and Teddy were not great howlers.
2. Bagheera the black panther finds a man-cub in the jungle and takes him to the Indian wolf family led by Akela. The wolves raise Mowgli as one of their own and he has adventures with many other animals, in which Disney classic film?

Answer: Jungle Book

"The Jungle Book" was the 19th animated feature film released by the Disney Studios in 1967. It was directed by none other than WOLFgang Reitherman and was the last movie produced by Walt Disney himself, who passed away during its production. The film was based upon the stories written by Rudyard Kipling featuring the boy Mowgli, Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, Kaa the snake, King Louie and his monkey friends, Colonel Hathi the elephant and of course the villainous tiger Shere Khan. Mowgli is raised by Akela and the wolves for ten years and learns the ways of the jungle.

When the tiger Shere Khan returns, Bagheera and Baloo escort Mowgli to the man village to take him to safety.
3. Which of the following animated movies features a wolf-dog who helps get a diphtheria antitoxin from Nenana to Nome just in time to save the lives of the town's children?

Answer: Balto

"Balto" (1995) is a children's movie based upon the true events of 1925 in Nome Alaska. On January 19th, 1925 a five-year old Inuit boy reported to the town doctor with a fever. By the very next morning he had died and many other residents of Nome were showing similar symptoms. After two more children's deaths Nome was quarantined and a massive order of vaccine was ordered. The closest supply was in Anchorage Alaska (1500 miles away). Planes were grounded due to severe blizzards. A train and ship managed to get the cargo to Nenana, over 650 miles from Nome. From there, 19 teams of sled dogs completed the last 700 miles in five days (a journey usually taking 25 days) in temperatures 40 degrees below zero and in white-out conditions. Balto was the lead-dog on the team that entered Nome with the life-saving antitoxin on February 2nd, 1925.

The movie "Balto" does not recognize the fact that there were multiple dog teams participating in the journey. The movie also depicts Balto as a wolf-dog or wolf-hybrid when in actuality he was a pure-bred Alaskan Malamute. The Alaskan Malamute is a Nordic sled dog and does trace its pedigree lines to the Arctic Wolf.
4. What 1991 film is an adaptation of a Jack London novel and shares the touching story of the relationship between a young Yukon gold miner and his wolf-dog?

Answer: White Fang

"White Fang" (1991) was directed by Randal Kleiser and starred Ethan Hawke, Seymour Cassel, Klaus Maria Brandauer, and the wolf hybrid, Jed. The film is an adaptation of Jack London's classic novel first published in 1906. White Fang is the son of a male wolf and female wolf-hybrid making him 3/4 wolf. His early life is hard as he grows up as the only survivor of his litter. A lynx kills his father and severely injures his mother. A group of Native Indians rescue the cub who then has to battle for his life against the dogs in the village. At five years of age, he is taken to Fort Yukon where he is sold to Beauty Smith for bottles of whiskey. Smith uses him in dog fights where White Fang battles for his life against a bulldog. Weedon Scott, a young wealthy gold hunter, saves his life and tames him. White Fang follows his new master back to California where he ultimately saves the life of the boy's father.

In 1994 there was a sequel released called "White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf."
5. What 2012 movie, based upon the short story "Ghost Walker", paints the wolf as a bloodthirsty savage that unmercifully stalks a group of oil-men stranded in the wilds of Alaska?

Answer: The Grey

"The Grey" (2012) is directed by Joe Carnahan and stars Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney and Frank Grillo. The film is based upon Ian MacKenzie Jeffers short story "Ghost Walker". A plane crash strands oil men in the Alaska wilderness. The plane comes down in wolf territory in harsh winter conditions.

The story traces the adventures of the group as they attempt to survive hypothermia and the wolves that stalk them. One-by-one each member of the survivors group is picked off and killed by the wolf pack.

The last surviving crew member is John Ottway who, earlier in the film, attempted unsuccessfully to commit suicide. At the film's climax he finds himself eye-to-eye with the alpha wolf.
6. In which children's fantasy movie do we meet the evil wolf Maugrim?

Answer: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Maugrim is the captain of the secret police working for the evil White Witch in the "Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" (2005). Although not technically the first book in the "Narnia" series, Walt Disney Studios released the movie in 1995. The Narnia series was written by British author C.S. Lewis who was a close friend of MiddleEarth author J.R.R. Tolkien.

In early versions of the book C.S. Lewis uses the name Fenir Ulf for the wolf; a name taken from Norse mythology. Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie are sent to live with Professor Digory Kirke in the countryside during World War II.

In the old house, Lucy discovers a secret doorway to Narnia through an old wardrobe. In Narnia she meets Mr. Tumnus, a talking faun. Edmund also finds his way into Narnia but comes under the beguilement of the evil White Queen. Eventually all four children arrive in Narnia and join with the mighty lion, Aslan to fight against the evil followers of the White Queen.

After a mighty battle the four children are crowned kings and queens of Narnia.

Answer: The Journey of Natty Gan

One day she decides to run away rather than become a ward of the state.

Her goal is to follow her father cross-country to Washington. Disguised as a boy she hops a train and starts off on her adventure westwards. On the way she rescues a wolf that has been abused in a dogfighting ring.

They become firm friends and traveling companions as she continues into the wilderness to find her father.
8. What 1983 American drama, starring Charles Martin Smith as a wildlife biologist studying Arctic wolves, is based upon a book written by Farley Mowat?

Answer: Never Cry Wolf

"Never Cry Wolf" (1983) is a powerful account of a wildlife biologist's experiences living in the Arctic wilderness. Tyler Smith (played by Charles Martin Smith) has been assigned by the government to study the reasons for the decline in the caribou population.

A bush pilot, Rosie, abandons him in the icy wilderness and he is only saved by the timely intervention of a local Inuit by the name of Ootek who helps build him a shelter. Over time he studies the movements of the wolves and shares a mutual curiosity in George and Angeline who have a litter of cubs close to his base camp. Among other firsts, "Never Cry Wolf" was the first Disney movie to show naked adult buttocks. Lead actor Charles Martin Smith worked on the project for almost three years and said it was the loneliest project of his entire life.
9. Which book series, written by Stephenie Meyer, has also birthed a successful movie franchise that brings to life characters that can morph into wolves?

Answer: Twilight

The "Twilight Series" (2005-2008) include four vampire romance novels. The series is written by Stephenie Meyer and follows the life of Bella Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington and falls in love with a 104-year old vampire Edward Cullen.

In the "Twilight" series there are members of the Quileute tribe who can shapeshift into wolf form independently of the full moon cycle. These characters possess superhuman strength, speed, stamina, the ability to regenerate, and can communicate telepathically.

The wolves also are not generally killed by traditional vampirism. In the "Twilight" series, Jacob becomes the Alpha leader of one of the packs and controls the other members forcibly. Aside from incredible strength and speed, the wolves possess acutely sharp audioception and olfacoception abilities. Edward leaves Forks because he believes he is placing Bella in danger.

In the meantime, she develops a closer friendship with Jacob. Jacob and the other wolves in the tribe protect Bella from Victoria who is a particulally malevolent vampire seeking revenge for the death of her mate, James. Bella is reunited with Edward in Italy where he is about to commit suicide.

They meet with the powerful vampire coven, the Volturi, and Bella has to agree that she will become a vampire in the future. The Cullens then return to Forks Washington which is the setting for the third book/movie in the series.
10. In which movie, based upon J.R.R. Tolkien's books, do Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas first fight an epic battle against evil wolves called wargs?

Answer: The Two Towers

"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy was directed by Peter Jackson and took an epic eight years to complete from start to finish. The films are based upon the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and include: "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), "The Two Towers" (2002), and "The Return of the King" (2003). In the second film, the heros fight a major battle against orcs riding on the evil wolves called wargs. The wargs are ferocious beasts, up to five feet in height, and sometimes ten feet in length. In "The Two Towers", Saruman sends out orcs and wargs to attack the people of Rohan who are on their way to Helm's Deep. The wargs make another appearance in the final movie during the Siege of Gondor.

"The Two Towers" is a continuation of the story begun in "The Fellowship of the Ring." Gandalf has just fallen fighting a Balrog, to ensure the party escapes the Mines of Moria. Boromir breaks down and attempts to steal the ring but dies a hero by protecting Frodo from orcs. There are three different storylines that thread their way through "The Two Towers". Frodo and Sam continue their quest on towards Mordor followed by Gollum who is trying to reclaim the ring. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas go to Rohan and engage in a fearsome battle at Helm's Deep after being reunited with a resurrected Gandalf. Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin evade their capture by the orcs and meet Treebeard the Ent. They then have to persuade the Ent and his brethren to help them in an attack on Isengard.
