Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Babette's Feast' is a beautiful film that centers around a French woman who becomes the cook/housemaid of a pair of Danish sisters. The film was based on a book by what great author?

Answer: Isak Dinesen

Isak Dinesen was the pseudonym of the famed Danish author Baroness Karen Blixen. Aside from writing the novel upon which this film was based, she also wrote 'Out of Africa'. In the film 'Babette's Feast', the Babette is a French cook who produces a wonderful feast to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the father of the two Danish women for which she works.
2. 'Tampopo' was a 1985 Japanese film directed by Juzo Itami, and revolving around what sort of food?

Answer: Noodles

The tagline of this film is: 'The first Japanese noodle western!' This is a play on the famous 'spaghetti westerns' produced in Italy. 'Tampopo' mixes comedy, eroticism and western movie themes with an insatiable lust for good noodles. I highly recommend this film to any fan of good Japanese food!
3. Another gorgeous film that features food as a theme is the wonderful 'Like Water for Chocolate'. In which country is this romantic drama set?

Answer: Mexico

The 1982 film 'Like Water for Chocolate' is called 'Como Agua Para Chocolate' in its native Spanish. The film, directed by veteran Mexican actor Alfonso Arau, revolves around love and the magical attributes of fine Mexican cooking. It's really a kick to watch!
4. If you love Chinese food, perhaps the movie 'Eat Drink Man Woman' is for you. This film revolves around a father, who happens to be a top chef, and his three daughters. The director of this film has gone on to have decent success in the American film market. Who is he?

Answer: Ang Lee

Aside from this film (called 'Yi Shi Nan Nu' in Chinese), Taiwanese director Ang Lee has directed 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'Hulk'. In 'Eat Drink Man Woman' the father has spoiled his daughters with wonderful cooking, but feels empty since his wife's death. He solves this by wooing a new prospective wife by the use of his best cooking techniques.
5. The 2001 film 'Tortilla Soup' is essentially a Mexican-American version of which other food-themed film?

Answer: Eat Drink Man Woman

Featuring Paul Rodriguez, Raquel Welch and Hector Elizondo, 'Tortilla Soup' retells the story told in 'Eat Drink Man Woman', but with a Mexican-American twist. This Marķa Ripoll-directed film is an okay copy of its predecessor, but I would strongly recommend watching the original!
6. In the charming 1996 film 'Big Night', two brothers attempt to save their dying restaurant with a plan to have a famous jazz musician play there for one special evening. What sort of restaurant do the brothers run?

Answer: Italian

The film stars Marc Anthony, Tony Shalhoub, and Stanley Tucci, who also co-directs it along with Campbell Scott. Minnie Driver and Isabella Rossellini also lend their acting talents to this film that celebrates the delicious world of Italian cooking.
7. Which of these actors stars as pizza chef Joey Boca in the tantalizing 1990 comedy 'I Love You to Death'?

Answer: Kevin Kline

Lots of funny moments in this film that also stars Tracey Ullman, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Hurt and Joan Plowright. Interspersed between the comedy are scenes of pizza-making and spaghetti sauce stewing. The most stunning thing about the film...it was based on a true story about a couple who lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania!
8. If you enjoy good southern cooking, perhaps the film 'Fried Green Tomatoes' is for you? Who wrote the novel upon which this 1991 film about relationships (and food) was based?

Answer: Fannie Flagg

The full title of Fannie Flagg's novel is actually 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe', but it was shorted for the purposes of fitting the title on movie marquees, posters and the like. The film features the acting of Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louis Parker, among others. It also features the secret behind good fried green tomatoes!
9. In the 1982 film 'Diner', the lives of five twenty-something men revolve around a favorite local eatery. In which city does the action in this restaurant take place?

Answer: Baltimore

'Diner' features an all-star cast, with Mickey Rourke, Steve Guttenberg, Kevin Bacon, Daniel Stern, and Ellen Barkin all featured as twenty-somethings trying to work life out in the late 1950s. Perhaps the tagline says it all: 'Suddenly, life was more than french fries, gravy and girls.'
10. The name of what confection can be found in a 1971 film starring Gene Wilder and based on a book by Roald Dahl?

Answer: Chocolate

The film was 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory', based on the children's classic by Roald Dahl (entitled 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'). Despite the fact that Dahl wrote the screenplay for the film, apparently he greatly disliked the final film product. Millions of fans of this story about a candy wonderland would disagree!
