Daniel Hillard, played by Robin Williams is first shown recording the vocal track for a cartoon character known as Pudgy the Parrot. His first task is to make the bird sing the iconic operatic piece from "The Barber of Seville". However, he quits his job after finding out that the character is going to be shown having a smoke.

You can see this written on the side of the petting zoo's van when they first show the Hillard's house. What a zoo it is with ponies, lambs, geese and even a rabbit! Unfortunately for Daniel, he didn't know that it was illegal to have barnyard animals in a residential area. This prompts his neighbor to call his wife, Miranda who is furious when she gets home.

He says this while Miranda is yelling at him for messing up the house. She then tells Daniel that she is tired of putting up with his negligence and wants a divorce.

After being told that Miranda will be hiring a housekeeper to look after their children after school, Daniel decides that he will have his gay brother who is a makeup artist transform him into an old woman so that he may have the position. After some failed attempts at finding the right look, Daniel decides that he should resemble Joan Collins who is famous for her role as Alexis Colby on the soap opera "Dynasty".

In order to give Mrs. Doubtfire a better chance of getting the position, Daniel first calls Miranda under the guise of applicants who'd be horrible choices. One of these is an ex-band member from "Severe Tire Damage" who is okay with giving the kids "a few light slams" every now and then.

Others include a woman who only knows three words in English and my personal favorite: a German lady who says she won't "werk" with the males because she used to be one.

While both Miranda and the kids are impressed by Mrs. Doubtfire enough to give her the job, things don't go so well on Daniel's first night as he accidentally burns their dinner as well as himself. Luckily, he finds the aforementioned restaurant in the phone book from which one can order gourmet meals for delivery and is able to put a delicious dinner on the table.

He actually tells her that she is his half-sister. This happens when Daniel comes home still dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire and Mrs. Sellner, his court liaison, is inexplicably there. Chris accidentally walks in on Mrs. Doubtfire in the bathroom and is horrified to see "her" using the toilet the way a man would. So, Daniel is forced to reveal his identity to both Chris and Lydia, his eldest daughter. However, he makes them promise not to tell anyone else, which they agree to do.

Shortly after Daniel adapts his Mrs. Doubtfire persona, Miranda starts seeing one of her old high school friends, Stu.
