Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A writer researching a book and his photographer girlfriend travel across the US visiting famous murder sites, only to discover that the man they are sharing the ride with is a killer.

Answer: Kalifornia

This 1993 film stars Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes. Brian (Duchovny) and girlfriend Carrie (Forbes) advertise for a ride share on their trip, and end up with hillbilly Early (Pitt) and his sweet but naive girlfriend Adele (Lewis). Unbeknownst to Brian and Carrie, Early is a ruthless thief and murderer on the run, and drama ensues when this is discovered.
2. A man who is having trouble sleeping becomes obsessed with going to support groups, before helping to create a unique new one.

Answer: Fight Club

This movie stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter and a fat-suit wearing MeatLoaf. Norton's character finds relief from his insomnia by attending various support groups for the sick and troubled, however his problem resurfaces when he meets another "faker", Marla Singer (Bonham Carter).

Then, through a serious of bizarre incidents, he meets and moves in with soap-maker Tyler Durden (Pitt), and the pair form "Fight Club". Initially a place where frustrated men can let off some steam, "Fight Club" escalates to a major terrorist operation.
3. Disillusioned and dissatisfied with her humdrum life, a woman finds excitement by having an affair with an unstable, younger co-worker.

Answer: The Good Girl

Jennifer Aniston, John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this bittersweet comedy. Jaded Justine (Aniston) has worked "forever and a day" at the Retail Rodeo, only to have to go home every evening to her pot-smoking pig of a husband Phil (Reilly). Enter new cashier Holden (Gyllenhaal), an equally troubled soul, and Justine finds an escape into an affair.

But reality is waiting for her, and things don't sail smoothly for long.
4. A young man, who has been suffering from blackouts, discovers that he has the power to change certain incidents in his past, thus altering his present reality, but never to his complete satisfaction.

Answer: The Butterfly Effect

Ashton Kutcher veers away from his usual comic roles to star alongside Amy Smart in this thought-provoking movie. Evan (Kutcher) has suffered from "blackouts" - loss of time and memory - all his life, and was encouraged to write about them as a child.

When he stumbles upon his old journals as a young man, Evan discovers he can go back into his past and change things. In order to improve his own life, and the life of his childhood sweetheart Kayleigh (Smart), he attempts to stop several unpleasant incidents in his past from occurring, but no matter what he does, someone always ends up getting hurt, and in the end Evan discovers he must make the ultimate sacrifice.
5. Steve Buscemi plays a criminal who is described as "kinda funny-lookin".

Answer: Fargo

Frances McDormand, William H. Macy and Peter Stormare join Buscemi in this 1996 film written, directed and produced by Ethan and Joel Coen. Jerry Lundegaard (Macy) hires two thugs (Buscemi and Stormare) to kidnap his wife, in order to share in the ransom money to be paid by his wealthy father-in-law.

It's supposed to be easy, with no cops involved, but then people get killed. In comes Sherriff Marge Gundersen (McDormand) to investigate, and through her questioning of various witnesses, she learns that there was a big guy and a little guy, and that the little guy was "kinda funny-looking, more than most people even".
6. This is a film based on the true story of an infamous Australian underworld figure.

Answer: Chopper

Eric Bana, originally known in Australia as a comedian, plays the role of Aussie criminal turned author and entertainer Mark "Chopper" Read. This film is a loose biography of Read, from his early days in prison (including the infamous slicing off of his ears in order to escape a hostile environment) to his dealings with other shady characters, and with the police, after his release during the 1980s.
7. Also based on a true story, this movie explores the relationship between two females who conspire to murder the mother of one of them.

Answer: Heavenly Creatures

Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet (in an early role) play New Zealand girls Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, who murdered Parker's mother in 1954. The girls meet at school and develop an intense and obsessive friendship that causes concern for their parents and teachers. Faced with separation, the only solution they see is to kill Pauline's mother.

They plan the murder carefully to appear to be an accident, but the truth eventually comes out. Much of the script comes from Parker's actual diary entries, discovered after her arrest.
8. Peter Boyle acts as a racist ex-police officer whose son and grandson follow him into the job, but with differing attitudes.

Answer: Monster's Ball

Halle Berry won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as the wife of a condemned prisoner in this film, which also stars Billy Bob Thornton and Heath Ledger. It centres around the unlikely relationship that forms between a racist-raised police officer, Hank (Thornton), and the black wife (Berry) of a man he has recently assisted in executing.

The pair bond through shared grief and loss, and endure despite the attitudes of Hank's father (Boyle).
9. Two criminals on the run are mistaken by the people of a small town as children's beauty pageant coordinators.

Answer: Happy, Texas

"Happy, Texas" is an offbeat comedy featuring Steve Zahn, Jeremy Northam, Ally Walker, Illeana Douglas and William H. Macy. After escaping from a prison work party, Wayne (Zahn) and Harry (Northam) steal a trailer and are mistaken for the gay pageant planner couple it belongs to. To avoid capture they have to go along with the ruse and deal with the wacky townsfolk.
10. After a high-school shooting two girls, one a victim and the other suspected of being involved, form an unlikely friendship.

Answer: Homeroom

This 2002 film, starring Busy Philipps, Erika Christensen and Victor Garber, focuses on the aftermath of a school shooting from a victim's perspective. In order to graduate, the school principal forces Alicia (Philipps) to visit the only survivor of a recent school shooting, Deanna (Christensen) in hospital, apparently so Alicia can get help with her work.

The two gradually get to know one another, all the while watched by a detective (Garber) who suspects Alicia may have known about the shooter's plans before the killing started.
