Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1990 romantic fantasy may be the first film that comes to mind when you think of a non-horror ghost story. Which supernatural chick flick won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress?

Answer: Ghost

Patrick Swayze portrayed Sam, the ghost in this film. He was murdered after he stumbled on to fraud at his workplace, but his ghost stuck around to protect his distraught girlfriend, Molly (Demi Moore). Whoopi Goldberg provided the comic relief and picked up the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance as a con-artist psychic whom Sam used to communicate with Molly.

The photo is a potter's wheel, which refers to one of the most famous scenes in the film where Molly and Sam turn pottery-making into a sexy pastime to the sounds of "Unchained Melody".
2. Another 1990 romantic fantasy also featured a ghost, in fact a whole flat/apartment of ghosts. Which British chick flick featured Alan Rickman as the recently departed love of Juliet Stevenson?

Answer: Truly, Madly, Deeply

"Truly Madly Deeply" was touted as the "thinking man's 'Ghost'", with film critic Roger Ebert calling it "a 'Ghost' for grownups". Alan Rickman's Jamie was already dead when the film began, and his girlfriend, Nina (Juliet Stevenson) was not coping well with the loss (Stevenson gave one of the most heart-wrenching performances of grief you'll ever see on film). So Jamie returned from the dead to help her move along with her life, basically by irritating her as much as he could. The film won the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay and picked up BAFTA acting nominations for Rickman and Stevenson.

The photo clue for this question takes a bit of connecting. The photo is of a street sign for "Savage Gardens". Savage Garden was a 1990s/2000s Australian pop duo, and one of their biggest hits was the 1997 song, "Truly Madly Deeply".
3. This 1988 comedy/fantasy was about a recently deceased couple who wanted to scare away the new tenants of their house, so they enlisted the help of a self-proclaimed "bio-exorcist" ghost. Which film featured "the ghost with the most"?

Answer: Beetlejuice

The Tim Burton film featured Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara Maitland, a young couple who died in a car crash. The Maitlands contacted Michael Keaton's obnoxious ghost Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice) to help them scare away the new tenants, but they soon found out that the cure was worse than the disease. Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Jeffrey Jones also starred in the film which picked up an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

The photo is of the constellation Orion, and the arrow is pointing to the star, Betelgeuse.
4. This 2001-2011 film series had quite a few ghosts, which is not surprising since the stories were about wizards and mythical beasts. Which series featured the ghost of Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington?

Answer: Harry Potter

The "Harry Potter" series started with the 2001 release of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and concluded with the 2011 release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2". The stories followed Harry Potter, an orphaned boy who discovered he was actually a wizard and a pretty important one at that. Some of the ghosts in the stories included Sir Nicholas, who was known as Nearly Headless Nick and portrayed by John Cleese, and Moaning Myrtle, who was portrayed by Shirley Henderson. Moaning Myrtle was particularly important to the plot of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

The photo is of Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station in London. The entrance was used to access the Hogwarts Express train in the "Harry Potter" films.
5. This 1988 comedy was a modern re-telling of a famous Christmas story known for its ghosts. In which film was self-centered television executive Frank Cross tormented by a crazy taxi-driver ghost and an abusive fairy ghost?

Answer: Scrooged

Bill Murray portrayed Frank Cross, the president of a television studio, in the adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Cross was the film's version of Ebenezer Scrooge. David Johansen (aka Buster Poindexter) played the taxi-driving Ghost of Christmas Past, and Carol Kane was the dancing Ghost of Christmas Present. The film featured an all-start cast including Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Alfre Woodard, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Robert Mitchum, among others.

The photo is of a first edition copy of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", published in 1843.
6. This 1947 romantic fantasy also spawned a 1960s television show with the same name. Which film featured the ghost of a sea captain who befriended a widow?

Answer: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Gene Tierney starred as Mrs. Muir, a widow who moved to a cottage in an English seaside village following the death of her husband. The house she rented was haunted by sea captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison) who ended up befriending her once he realized that she appreciated the house as much as he did. The television series featured Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare in the title roles.

The photo is a sign at Muir Woods National Monument in California. The monument was named for environmentalist, author, and Sierra Club co-founder John Muir (1838-1914) who was instrumental in having sections of the western United States set aside for conservation. So the clue was "Muir".
7. Which 2008 comedy/fantasy featured Ricky Gervais as a reluctant ghost whisperer in a small place called New York City?

Answer: Ghost Town

"Ghost Town" was comedian Ricky Gervais's first starring film role. He portrayed a dentist named Bertram Pincus who after a near-death experience was pestered by ghosts with unfinished business on earth. Frank (Greg Kinnear) offered to keep the other ghosts away if Pincus would break up Frank's widow's (Téa Leoni) engagement, but Pincus ended up falling for her. Gervais picked up a Satellite award for Best Actor, and the film won the AARP's "Movies for Grown Ups" Best Comedy award.

The photo is of a ghost town called Bodie, California, which is located about 75 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Bodie was established in the mid 1800s as a gold mining camp and by 1880, had a population of nearly 3,000 people. However by the 1950s, the site was abandoned, and the town was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
8. You might not think of this film as a ghost story, but it featured several cast members who were no longer living, so yeah, ghosts. In which 1989 sports fantasy film was the lead character told to "ease his pain"?

Answer: Field of Dreams

"Field of Dreams" was one of several baseball-related films featuring Kevin Costner. In this film, he played Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who built a baseball field in his corn field after hearing a voice tell him, "If you build it, he will come" and later, "ease his pain". The field was eventually used by ball players of bygone eras including Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, and Chick Gandil, and by Ray's late, estranged father, about whom the quotes were meant. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and in 2017, was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry. The filming location in Iowa became a tourist attraction with over 60,000 people visiting annually.

The picture is an historical marker at the Shoeless Joe Jackson house in Greenville, South Carolina. Jackson was a popular baseball player from the early 1900s who was banned from the sport for his participation in the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal. Along with other members of the Chicago White Sox, he was accused of throwing the World Series in exchange for $5,000, although he denied involvement. Shoeless Joe was a significant character in the film.
9. Which 1993 fantasy film featured Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick, and Tom Sizemore as ghosts who needed Robert Downey Jr.'s help to resolve the loose ends in their lives? A hint regarding the photo: It's a picture of a pair of nebulae.

Answer: Heart and Souls

Harrison (Grodin), Penny (Woodard), Julia (Sedgwick), and Milo (Sizemore) were passengers on a bus that crashed, and their souls attached to baby Thomas, who was born in a nearby car. They became friends with the child Thomas but decided to leave him when his "invisible friends" become an issue. As an adult, Thomas (Downey) suffered from abandonment issues over the relationship with the ghosts, but when they returned, he agreed to help them with their unfinished business so that they could move on. The film received mixed reviews.

The photo is of the Heart and Soul Nebulae, located in the constellation Cassiopeia - a clue to the title of the film, if you recognized them.
10. This comedy/fantasy was based on a Noel Coward play and adapted/directed by David Lean. In which 1945 film did a writer's current and late wives make life miserable for him?

Answer: Blithe Spirit

A writer, Charles Condomine (Rex Harrison) asked a medium, Madame Arcati (Margaret Rutherford) to conduct a séance at his house, hoping to use the experience for a book on which he was working, and during the event, Arcati managed to conjure up his ex-wife, Elvira (Kay Hammond). Elvira decided she wanted to get Charles back by having him join her as a spirit, but she killed his current wife, Ruth (Constance Cummings) by mistake, which didn't sit too well with Ruth. Noel Coward wasn't happy with the film, since David Lean had added scenes that weren't in the original play, but the film did pick up an Oscar for Visual Effects.

The photo is an historical marker for the Blythe Ferry in Meigs County, Tennessee. The ferry was used during the Trail of Tears removal of the Cherokee people, and although the ferry no longer exists, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. So the photo was a hint towards the title: Blythe/Blithe.
